Rohit Sharma Wanted MS Dhoni-Style Exit From Test Cricket, BCCI Rejected: Report

Rohit Sharma wanted to travel to England for the five-Test series and retire midway just like Dhoni had done during the 2014 tour of Australia, according to a report by Sky Sports. However, the offer was rejected by the BCCI and that reportedly led to the decision to retire ahead of the series. "Selectors wanted consistency during the series and offered Sharma the opportunity to go to the series, but not as captain. He decided to retire instead," the report claimed. Rohit stunned everyone with his decision to retire from Test cricket and Kohli followed suit just few days later. As a result, the BCCI selectors face a tough challenge to fill the void left by the retirement of the two stalwarts of modern cricket. The report further claimed that the BCCI selection committee held 'informal talk' with both Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant as potential candidates to succeed Rohit as the next Test captain. The selection committee is expected to announce the squad for the England series around May 23 and although there have been many media reports surrounding Bumrah and Gill leading in the captaincy race, nothing official has been confirmed till now. "One selector at the BCCI has reservations over giving Gill the captaincy, given that his place on the side is not guaranteed, and suggested he would be better suited to the vice-captaincy role," the report read. Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar feels the high-octane IPL is the perfect training ground for future India captains, providing the likes of Shubman Gill the required leadership experience before graduating to the highest level. Gujarat Titans skipper Gill is expected to captain India on the Test tour of England following the retirement of Rohit Sharma. Rishabh Pant is likely to be his deputy. Virat Kohli 's retirement, which came just days after Rohit's decision, has left a massive void in the Test team. Gavaskar said it would take at least a couple of years for Gill and other potential leaders like Pant and Shreyas Iyer to become finished products. "It would take a couple of years (to groom future leaders) to get to the level of our super captains (MS Dhoni, Rohit, Virat). All of them brought a different approach to captaincy," said Gavaskar in a response to a PTI query on Star Sports Press Room. Pant is currently captaining LSG, while Iyer is leading the Punjab Kings in this IPL. "When you see Gill, Iyer and Pant, three main pretenders to Indian captaincy you see an amalgamation of all three (Dhoni, Rohit, Virat). Gill probably is more competitive, when there is a decision, he is asking the umpire right away. He is probably a lot more involved. "Though Pant is behind the stumps, he is also very involved. Iyer too has been superb. All three have brought a lot of positivity in the way they have been captaining. "As a captain, nothing gets you more experience than pressure of a T20 game. It is the best training ground for captaincy," added the former India captain.

"Shubman Gill Is More Competitive...": Sunil Gavaskar's Big Statement Amid Test Captaincy Dilemma

The great Sunil Gavaskar feels the high-octane IPL is the perfect training ground for future India captains, providing the likes of Shubman Gill the required leadership experience before graduating to the highest level. Gujarat Titans skipper Gill is expected to captain India on the Test tour of England following the retirement of Rohit Sharma. Rishabh Pant is likely to be his deputy. It is the best training ground for captaincy," added the former India captain. On the same program, former India batter Suresh Raina underlined the importance of winning the IPL as a skipper before taking up the captaincy of the national team. "Young players think differently these days. Gill is searching for that IPL trophy. If he goes on to lead in Tests after winning the IPL, he will not only flourish but he will also get a lot of respect in the dressing room. "Rajat Patidar is also captaining well. Though he has not done a lot of captaincy. he has the calmness about him. "There is no Virat or Rohit now, they used to look to the opposition in the eye and put them under pressure. That comes with energy, character and body language. Shubman has that. Even Hardik Pandya has that," said Raina. The southpaw added that Kohli will be fired up more than ever to end his long wait for an IPL title. "There is only thing Virat doesn't have, it is the IPL trophy. His hunger to win is unmatched. He deserves that trophy," added Raina in an interaction focusing on the race to IPL play-offs. The IPL resumes on May 17 following the sudden suspension of the league in the wake of India-Pakistan military conflict.

'For Us, He Is Cheeku...': Virat Kohli's Delhi Teammate Leaves Heartfelt Message

Last Updated: Ishant Sharma reminisces about his childhood friendship with Virat Kohli, revealing that despite the latter's superstar status, he remains 'Cheeku' to him. Star India pacer Ishant Sharma has said that Virat Kohli is a childhood friend of his, and while he is a superstar to the world, he is 'Cheeku' to him, as he reminisced about their good old days of playing together for Delhi and eventually for the Indian national team. Ishant, who is currently playing for the Gujarat Titans, said that Kohli will always be Cheeku to those who grew up with him, reflecting on the friendship that dates back to their days in Delhi cricket. Ishant, who played beside Kohli from the U-17 level through to the senior level India side, said that the latter's public image of a superstar contrasts with the person he has known since childhood. 'I think Virat Kohli (the star) is for outside people. I can't see him like that because we played in the U-17s. He is a childhood friend of mine. When we were in the U-19s, we used to count how much money we had," Ishant said while speaking on the Star Sports Press Room. 'We used to eat food. When we used to go to the U-19s, we used to save our TAs and take them with us. So, Virat Kohli is different for everyone. He is different for me. Imagine your brother has reached such heights," Ishant added. The veteran Indian pacer recalled his and Kohli's days in the under-19 setup, where they shared rooms, budgeted meals and saved travel allowances. Ishant said that their bond remained despite Kohli's stardom, in contrast to a few other cricketers who have claimed the opposite. 'Everyone is thinking that he is great. But you will see that at the end of the day, he is a human being. At the end of the day, you have spent a lot of time with him. You know him in and out," Ishant said. 'I have never felt that he is Virat Kohli. For us, he is Cheeku. We have always seen it like this. He has also seen me like this. We are sleeping together and sharing a room. When our India debut came, the name of the team came…he kicked me and said, Your name has come," Ishant added. First Published: May 18, 2025, 08:26 IST

"Virat Kohli Counted Money, Ate Food...": Ex-Teammate Reveals RCB Star's Huge Transformation

India pacer Ishant Sharma said on Saturday that Virat Kohli will always be 'Cheeku' to those who grew up with him, reflecting on the friendship that dates back to their early days in Delhi cricket. Ishant, who played alongside Kohli from the under-17 level through to the senior India team, said the former captain's public image of a super star contrasts with the person he has known since childhood. "I think Virat Kohli (the star) is for outside people. I can't see him like that because we played in the U-17s. He is a childhood friend to me," Ishant, who bagged 434 wickets in 105 Tests, said on Star Sports Press Room on the eve of Gujarat Titans' match against Delhi Capitals. The 36-year-old recalled their days in the under-19 setup, where they shared rooms, budgeted meals, and saved travel allowances. "When we were in the U-19s, we used to count how much money we had. We used to eat food. When we used to go to the U-19s, we used to save our TAs and take them with us. So, Virat Kohli is different for everyone. He is different for me," he said. Ishant said their bond remained brotherly despite Kohli's stardom. "Imagine, your brother has reached such heights. Everyone is thinking that he is great. But you will see that at the end of the day, he is a human being. At the end of the day, you have spent a lot of time with him. You know him in and out. You know where he has come from, how he is and how he is not." The two were seen embracing on the field ahead of a recent IPL match, with photos of the moment widely shared online. Ishant said their interactions rarely involve talks about cricket but it's all about humour and banter. "When we meet, we never talk about how we played so many Test matches. We never talk about it. We talk about funny jokes. This is happening, that is happening, look at this, look at that. Funny jokes," he said. "I have never felt that he is Virat Kohli. For us, he is Cheeku. We have always seen it like this. He has also seen me like this. We are sleeping together and sharing a room." Both players made their international debuts in the late 2000s, with Sharma breaking into the national team just before Kohli. He recalled the moment Kohli informed him of his first India call-up. "When our India debut came, the name of the team kicked me and said, your name has come. He said, will you really play for India? I said, brother, let me sleep," said Ishant.
