South Sioux City Police hosted this year's State FOP conference
SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (KCAU) — South Sioux City was the host to dozens of law enforcement officers from across Nebraska for the Fraternal Order of Police State Conference. The event lets officers connect with others and learn about recent legislation. Several speakers spoke on how the murder of George Floyd in 2020 caused a shift in attitudes towards police, but that shift was less than negative in Nebraska. 'We know that the support from law enforcement, especially across the state, has actually grown because of that,' said Sgt. Anthony Conner, the Nebraska Fraternal Order of Police president. 'I think people saw how tough our job is because it was on the front cover of every paper, and [the] top story of every news. So they saw how tough our job was, so support has actually grown.' Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen signed a bill that aims to help retain officers. It makes tuition waivers available to first responders going to community college. Governor Pillen said several bills were passed to help law enforcement. 'One of the things that's been a big priority for us is that we increase the pay, you know, as so recruitment and enhance recruitment is making a tangible number of gains and results,' said Pillen The Governor also praised Nebraska's law enforcement officers. Pillen says he's already planning to bring a bill to support them even more for next year's session. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Community diversity learning at Badgebup-Rockwell Country Women's Association May meeting held in Katanning
The Badgebup-Rockwell Country Women's Association branch held their monthly meeting on May 26, with members of the group coming to Katanning to learn more about diversity in their local community. Members enjoyed a talk by local Read Write Now facilitator Kerry Palmer about assisting CaLD (Culturally and Linguistic Diverse) people in Katanning. Read Write Now is a facilitated playgroup in Katanning that offers English language lessons for women along with developmental programs for children. The lessons are designed to support mothers from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to learn English in a welcoming local setting, while also providing early childhood learning experiences for children. For years Ms Palmer has helped culturally and linguistically diverse families in Katanning via two weekly sessions for migrants and refugees, one for men and one for women, helping them understand both the English language and the Australian way of life. With the diverse nationalities and levels of literacy, it is a daunting task but enjoyed immensely by Ms Palmer and her helpers at the playgroup. Delegates from Badgebup-Rockwell will also join members from the other 123 branches from around the State at the 101st Country Women's Association of WA State Conference in Albany in June. The theme of the Conference is Beyond 100: Reimagining our Impact.

Teachers demand filling of vacant posts, restoration of old pension scheme
Members of the Tamil Nadu Primary School Teachers Federation on Saturday took out a rally in Dindigul as part of the concluding event of the State Conference. The teachers condemned BJP led Central government for National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and Hindi imposition in Tamil Nadu. They urged the State government to fill the posts of teachers that were lying vacant. They also sought the restoration of the old pension scheme and other benefits for teachers. They said that government schools should be protected. The members also raised slogans at the rally urging the government to fulfil their demands. On Friday, the Teachers Federation adopted resolutions rejecting the NEP and Hindi imposition in Tamil Nadu. They said that if NEP 2020 was implemented in Tamil Nadu it would lead to Hindi imposition in the State. All the languages under the eighth schedule of the Constitution should be treated equally, they said. A resolution to protect the government schools in Tamil Nadu was also adopted at the Conference. Empowering government schools will establish a strong education system for the benefit of the students. Schools and teachers play a huge role in shaping the future generations and the main objective should be providing quality education, they said, adding every child should have access to education.

Second harassment incident within months: CPI(M) expels former MP
Kolkata The Communist Party of India (Marxist) which recently held a massive rally at Kolkata's Brigade ground is facing a peculiar problem as senior male leaders face allegations of harassment. In a recent development, a female party leader alleged senior leader Bansa Gopal Chowdhury of sending her objectionable messages on social media. Mr. Chowdhury has been expelled from the party after the allegations came to light and an internal investigation found him guilty of the charges. This is the second such incident concerning the party's senior leadership after another senior member Tanmoy Bhattacharya was suspended for harassing a female journalist. Mr. Chowdhury, a 65-year-old senior leader and three-time former MP from Asansol was a Paschim Bardhaman district committee member of the party. According to sources, the woman who has raised the allegations is also a former councilor from the Jiaganj-Azimganj Municipality area in West Bengal. The female leader posted photographs of Bansa Gopal with other State CPI(M) leaders on social media on February 22 after their three-day State Conference started. 'How is such a degraded human being be a representative at the CPI(M) State Conference?' the woman's post on social media read. This came with pictures of Mr. Chowdhury posing with senior party leader and State Secretary Mohammad Salim and others at the State Conference event. After the notice for Mr. Chowdhury's expulsion was made public, the woman who had alleged the leader told The Hindu, 'I had faith in my party. They kept my dignity.' Mr. Chowdhury has denied all allegations since the start and has said that he has been a victim of a bigger conspiracy.
