Pune: The state school education department's 'Nipun Maharashtra' initiative has tasked teachers across districts with collecting and recording the WhatsApp numbers of students' parents to connect to the official

. With this, alerts regarding updates of the students' academic performance will be shared directly to the messenger Nipun Maharashtra programme aims to ensure that 100% of students from Std II to V achieve

It was launched on March 5 this year to strengthen parent-teacher communication and improve learning have been given till June 30 to compile the phone numbers, although it is not made mandatory for parents to share the same. The directive applies to teachers of all govt and aided schools, excluding self-financed and non-aided commissioner Sachindra Pratap Singh told TOI, "Under the programme, class teachers from Std I to XII are instructed to enter parents' contact details into the State Council of Educational Research and Training Maharashtra (SCERTM) app, allowing them to share students' subject-wise academic progress directly via WhatsApp.

This move is expected to keep parents better informed and engaged in their children's education."Teachers were also encouraged to download and use the Nipun Maharashtra SCERTM app as part of the initiative's digital integration strategy. The app is designed to help track academic performance and streamline communication between schools and Kale, a primary teacher at the ZP school in Sangli, pointed out, "While teachers have been informed to update mobile numbers of students' parents under Nipun Maharashtra, in reality, when filling out information on the UDISE+ platform, parents' mobile numbers are already provided through the school. These numbers could have just been used for Nipun Maharashtra. There is an ongoing consideration at govt level to reduce non-educational tasks for teachers. This initiative ties in with the same."Beyond communication, Nipun Maharashtra also envisions creation of a comprehensive educational platform. In the future, the aim is to provide study materials, videos, and other audiovisual content to support student learning and bridge academic have long juggled multiple responsibilities beyond teaching — from collecting Aadhaar details to managing student records. With this new initiative, the education department hopes to foster a more connected and transparent educational environment, ensuring that no child is left behind in their foundational years.
