Penang Customs seizes vape devices, liquid worth RM5.17 million
BUTTERWORTH: The Penang Customs Department seized 86,086 electronic cigarette (vape) devices and 996.5 litres of vape liquid, worth RM5.17 million including taxes, in two separate raids conducted last April. State Customs director Rohaizad Ali said the raids, carried out at the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) and Port Klang, also led to the arrest of three men, including a Chinese national. He said the first raid took place at 1.15 pm on April 3, when the Enforcement Division's Operations Unit inspected a container that had arrived at NBCT from China. 'The inspection uncovered 14,200 units of electronic cigarette devices and 210 bottles of vape liquid that were undeclared during import, alongside other merchandise. The total estimated value of the goods was RM1.33 million, with duties amounting to RM205,400. 'A local man acting as an agent and a Chinese national who claimed to be the exporter were arrested. This marks the first vape-related seizure in Penang this year that has led to arrests,' he said at a press conference held at the Bagan Jermal Enforcement Storage facility today. Rohaizad said the inspection found that the container had been declared as carrying plastic goods, but the vape devices and liquids were hidden among other items and not declared. In a separate raid at 11 am on April 10, authorities seized 71,886 electronic cigarette devices and 786.5 litres of vape liquid worth RM3.64 million, including tax, following the inspection of another container from China, this time at Port Klang. A local man in his 40s, who acted as an agent, was arrested in connection with the case. 'The container was declared to contain belts and wallets, but the inspection uncovered undeclared vape devices and liquids mixed with the declared items,' he said. Rohaizad added that further investigations are ongoing for both cases under Section 133(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967.

Penang authorities probing into ganja seizures at airport, mail centre
BUTTERWORTH: The authorities are investigating two drug seizures involving ganja at the Penang International Airport and a local mail and courier centre. State Customs director Rohaizad Ali said in the first case, Customs officers from the PIA passenger inspection branch, at 11.35am on March 4, discovered an unclaimed luggage on Carousel A containing 29 transparent packages of dried plant material suspected to be ganja. "The luggage had arrived on an international flight from China and bore no identifying information," he said at a press conference here today. "The seized items weighed an estimated 16,210g, with a street value of about RM1.59 million. "We believe the drugs were smuggled into the country as checked-in personal luggage." He said the case is still under investigation. In a separate incident on April 16, Rohaizad said, Customs officers from the Narcotics Unit, assisted by drug detection dogs, intercepted four suspicious parcels during an inspection at the Mail and Courier Centre , Pos Malaysia Bhd, in the state. He said the parcels, declared as containing nine comic books, were found to hold 2,236g of dried plant material, also suspected to be ganja. He said the estimated street value was RM219,128. "The items had previously been exported to the United Kingdom and marked 'returned parcel'." Both cases are being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. If convicted, offenders may face the death penalty or life imprisonment, along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the rotan if not sentenced to death.

Perlis Customs seizes untaxed ciggies, liquor, arrests senior citizen
PADANG BESAR: Perlis Customs seized untaxed cigarettes and liquor worth over RM34,000, with unpaid duties exceeding RM70,000, in two separate raids in Taiping, Perak and Sungai Petani, Kedah over the weekend. The contraband was found stored in residential homes repurposed as makeshift warehouses. During one of the operations, a 60-year-old man believed to be the mastermind behind the illegal activity was arrested. Officers also seized three vehicles allegedly used to transport the untaxed goods. State Customs director Ismail Hashim said the first raid was conducted at 2.15am on May 17 following a tip-off about suspicious activities at the suspect's residence. "We found three cars parked outside the house. Upon inspection, 24,210 sticks of undeclared cigarettes and 113.25 litres of liquor were found in the boot of the vehicles," he said. The suspect, a trader, allegedly confessed to running the smuggling operation from his home for the past year. Authorities believe the goods were sourced from the Klang Valley. "The seized cigarettes include cigarettes from Indonesia and Germany. They were believed to be intended for distribution around Taiping," he said. In the second raid at about 1.30pm the same day, officers stormed a vacant house in Bukit Banyan, Sungai Petani and found 73,040 sticks of cigarettes worth RM50,563.80 hidden in a living room. "Although the two cases are not directly linked, we believe the modus operandi is similar, using cars or vacant premises as storage sites before distributing the items around Taiping and Sungai Petani," Ismail said. He added that the cigarettes and liquor found in the vehicles during the first raid appeared to have been recently acquired from suppliers. In total, 97,250 sticks of cigarettes worth RM33,258 were seized, involving unpaid duties estimated at RM67,510.80. The 113.25 litres of liquor were valued at RM1,489.52, with duties totalling RM2,734.41. "All three vehicles, believed to belong to the suspect, were also seized. Each is estimated to be worth around RM10,000," Ismail said. Cigarettes and liquor are restricted items and subject to import permits issued by the Customs Director-General under Items 1 and 3, Schedule III, Part II of the Customs (Prohibition of Imports) Order 2023. The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. If convicted, the offender may be fined not less than 10 times the value of the goods or RM100,000, whichever is higher, and not more than 20 times the value or RM500,000, or face imprisonment of between six months and five years, or both.
