Drills to be held at dams, reservoirs
Chennai: As part of a broader civil defence initiative recommended by the Union ministry of home affairs, Tamil Nadu will conduct disaster preparedness drills at major dams and water reservoirs across the state this week. The focus is to assess readiness in the event of emergencies. Officials said the drills will include scenarios such as emergency replacement of damaged water supply connections, rupture or sabotage of main water pipelines, and the potential consequences of such disruptions. "Other mock exercises will cover drowning incidents, fire rescue, air-raid siren response, and emergency medical protocols near major water bodies," a senior official said, adding that these drills will not affect regular operations or public access. The public has been urged to remain calm and cooperate if they observe emergency vehicles or personnel near dams and State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) and District Emergency Operations Centres (DEOCs) will oversee the exercises, with planning underway by district collectors and the Greater Chennai Corporation commissioner. Instructions have been issued to identify high-priority locations and begin groundwork by Sunday. Locations for the water-based drills will be announced in the coming civil defence efforts are part of a larger series of coordinated drills that began last week across Tamil Nadu. On Saturday, the V O Chidambaranar Port Authority and Tuticorin Thermal Power Station in Tuticorin conducted simulations of hostile aerial attacks, fire outbreaks on cargo vessels, and mass preparedness drills have already been completed at key infrastructure facilities including ports, airports, nuclear and thermal power stations. The initiative aims to strengthen Tamil Nadu's resilience and emergency response in the event of coordinated or accidental disasters involving critical infrastructure.
