Renewal through accountability and partnerships
SASOLBURG – Metsimaholo Local Municipality has emerged as a model of fiscal responsibility and visionary leadership in South Africa's local governance landscape.
Its recent inclusion in the national 'Adopta-Municipality' initiative underscores its commitment to sustainable development and effective service delivery.
Minister of Public Works & Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, formalised a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Metsimaholo, marking a significant step in the municipality's infrastructure revitalisation efforts on May 9. Executive Mayor Jack Malindi signed the MoU on behalf of the municipality, accompanied by MMC for Technical and Infrastructural Services, Mosiou Poho. This partnership, facilitated by Infrastructure South Africa (ISA), aims to expedite infrastructure projects, streamline regulatory processes, and implement robust monitoring mechanisms to ensure timely and budget-compliant project completion.
Metsimaholo's selection for this initiative is a testament to its commendable financial management.
Metsimaholo maintains a clean slate with both Eskom and Rand Water.
This financial prudence and improved audit outcomes underscore the municipality's dedication to transparency and efficient governance. The municipality's proactive approach extends beyond financial management.
In the 2024 State of the Municipal Address, Malindi highlighted several initiatives aimed at improving residents' quality of life.
These include the appointment of key senior officials to enhance operational efficiency, the allocation of over R500 000 to support tertiary education for more than 100 young people, and the provision of free basic services to over 7 429 indigent households.
Additionally, significant investments have been made in infrastructure projects, such as upgrading water and electricity systems, constructing roads, and improving sanitation facilities.
Metsimaholo's engagement in the 'Adopt-a-Municipality' initiative reflects its unwavering commitment to improving the quality of life for its residents through sustainable infrastructure development. By fostering strategic partnerships and embracing innovative governance models, Metsimaholo is not only addressing current infrastructural challenges but also paving the way for a more prosperous and accountable future for local municipalities across South Africa.
