Oman's population estimated to reach 5.5mn in 2025: UN
Muscat – Oman's population is estimated to reach at 5.5mn in 2025, with a predominantly youthful demographic, presenting an opportunity for the sultanate's socio-economic development, according to a new report from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) released on Tuesday.
As of June 2025, Oman's total population stands at 5,303,578, comprising 3,006,387 Omani nationals (56.69%) and 2,297,191 expatriates (43.31%), as per the data released on Tuesday by National Center for Statistics and Information.
The State of the World Population 2025 Report released by the UNPFA revealed that 24% of Oman's population is under the age of 15, while 21% falls within the 10–24 age bracket. The working-age group (15–64 years) constitutes 73% of the population, suggesting a strong potential for economic productivity.
Interestingly, only 3% of the population is aged 65 years and older, indicating a relatively low dependency burden from the elderly as compared to many other countries.
Oman's total fertility rate stands at 2.5 children per woman, close to the replacement level, while life expectancy is 79 years for men and 82 for women – a sign of strong health outcomes across the board.
As per the report, Oman has achieved full coverage in skilled birth attendance, with maternal mortality rates impressively low at 13 per 100,000 live births.
The sultanate's adolescent birth rate is low, at five births per 1,000 girls aged 15–19, and child marriage before age 18 is rare, with a prevalence of just 4%.
In education, Oman has made strides in gender parity, with equal enrolment rates for boys and girls across primary and secondary levels. Net enrolment stands at 89% for primary, 86% for lower secondary, and 76% for upper secondary education.
