Wave pool shuts down after kids report electric shocks in the water over Memorial Day weekend: ‘Extremely painful'

The wave pool at Georgia 's Splash in the Boro Water Park remains closed as authorities investigate reports from several Memorial Day guests who said they felt an electric shock while in the water. Emergency services were called to evaluate five people, including children, at the Statesboro attraction but none required further medical attention, according to a news release issued on Tuesday. An unidentified mother told WTOC her children and several others felt shocks in the wave pool, describing the pain as "extremely painful" and similar to a repeated jellyfish sting. The woman said she and others alerted the pool staff, prompting the arrival of the Statesboro Fire Department and EMS. On Tuesday, the park said certified electricians and representatives from Georgia Power inspected the park's electrical rooms and disconnected the power supply for potential repairs. The electrical systems were reportedly operating within standard levels. The Independent has contacted representatives for Splash in the Boro Water Park and Bulloch County Recreation and Parks for comment. The water park remains open to the public, but entry to the wave pool is locked while the cause of the reported electrical current remains under investigation. The park said there are no health concerns for swimmers.

Statesboro ‘Sip & Soar' program to promote open container ordinance

STATESBORO, Ga. (WSAV) — The Statesboro Visitors Bureau is trying to promote nightlife downtown, launching a campaign called 'Sip and Soar.' 'In the last five to ten years downtown Statesboro has absolutely expanded, it's exploded,' said Justin Samples, vice president of marketing and operations for the visitor's bureau. 'There's so much more to do.' In an effort to attract more people to the area, the city passed an open container ordinance in 2020, but officials with the bureau said there's a lot of confusion around it. 'The more we have to do downtown the better that everybody does,' said Samples. 'We're excited that this ordinance, this program has come to downtown because this is just going to help everyone to continue to grow.' Their new campaign starts with a cup, specially printed to include their participating businesses and a QR code to their website – which has a map of the open container zone and their rules. 'It's brought a lot of people downtown that can explore and enjoy things that they've not done before,' said Franklin Dismuke, owner of Eagle Creek Brewery in Statesboro. Eagle Creek is at the far side of the open container zone. Dismuke said he's hoping the campaign can bring in new visitors. 'We do have occasional problems with people coming down this way but we have a large downtown area with a lot of different businesses so hopefully everyone will go down and explore and see what other businesses we have to offer in the downtown area,' said Dismuke. In addition to staying within the zone – which excludes the courthouse lawn, there are three rules: no glass cups, less than 20 ounces to a cup and you must be 21 or older to drink. The special-print cups are not required to take part in the City's open container zone. You can still get one at any of the participating businesses downtown by buying a drink. Bradwell Institute boys punch 4th consecutive trip to state tournament

HINESVILLE, Ga. (WSAV) — The Bradwell Institute boys basketball team will make its fourth consecutive trip to the state tournament after 66-40 win over Evans in the quarterfinals for the Boys Region 1-AAAAA tournament on Feb. 12 at Bradwell Institute. The game was never really in doubt. Bradwell lead 14-8 after the first quarter. They led by 16, 32-16, at the half. In the fourth quarter, they led by as many as 30 points, 60-30, before earning a trip to the region tournament semifinals. Bradwell will play the Lakeside-Evans on Feb. 13 for a spot in the region championship. Lakeside-Evans is the No. 1 seed on the north side of the region. Also in the region, Statesboro fell on the road to Greenbrier, 68-60. The Blue Devils led with under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. After a flagrant foul was called on Statesboro, the head coach disagreed and received a technical foul. Greenbrier made four consecutive free throws and took a lead they would not relinquish. Statesboro will not make the state playoffs this year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
