I-77 driver dies after blown tire plunges pickup down embankment, trooper says

A driver died on Interstate 77 and three passengers were hospitalized after a blown tire spun a pickup out of control and down an embankment Friday night, State Highway Patrol Trooper Christopher Casey said. Casey identified the driver as Elmer Adalberto Romero Giron, a 38-year-old Statesville resident. Giron was pronounced dead at the scene, the trooper said. An adult passenger and two young passengers were taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, Casey said. Their names and ages weren't immediately released Saturday. The back right tire of Giron's 1999 Ford Ranger blew out around 7:50 p.m. near mile marker 64 of southbound I-77, Casey said. That's north of Statesville. The truck hit a guardrail off the right side of the highway before plunging down the embankment, the trooper said. I-77 South was partially closed for about two hours as troopers investigated.
