Two suspects accused of armed robbery at Statesville hotel after Snapchat drug arrangement: Police

STATESVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Two people were arrested Wednesday in connection to a reported armed robbery at a Statesville hotel from a planned meetup. According to the Statesville Police Department, officers responded to the Red Roof Inn on East Broad Street at 5 p.m. May 14. Upon arrival, they were told a victim was robbed of money and other personal items at gunpoint, and the suspects fled behind the business. 2 Hickory High students hit by car at busy intersection Officers were able to track and apprehend one suspect, identified as 19-year-old Steven Michael Potts, of Statesville. A second suspect, a juvenile, was located and taken into custody a short time later near Safriet Road. The investigation determined the suspects had allegedly arranged to meet the victim through the Snapchat app for a narcotics-related transaction. When the victim arrived, officers say the suspects committed the robbery. A search warrant for the suspects' hotel room and vehicle, allegedly led to the discovery of a firearm, cash, and additional evidence connected to the robbery. Steven Michael Potts has been charged with: Armed Robbery, Second Degree Kidnapping, and Conspiracy to Commit Robbery. He was transported to the Iredell County Detention Center and is being held without bond pending a first court appearance. The juvenile suspect faces the same charges and was transported to the Alexander County Juvenile Detention Center under a secure custody order. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. STATESVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The Statesville Police Department is investigating a fatal collision that occurred early Friday morning on Davie Avenue. At approximately 6 a.m. on Friday, May 9, emergency personnel responded to a traffic incident involving a 2024 Volkswagen and an electric scooter. According to the preliminary investigation, Matthew Miller, 39, of Lenoir, was driving the Volkswagen when the collision with the scooter occurred. The driver of the scooter sustained critical injuries and was transported to Iredell Memorial Hospital where they were later pronounced dead. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The investigation is ongoing. Motorcyclist killed in Statesville crash; Porsche driver arrested

A fatal collision between a Porsche SUV and a motorcycle occurred on Tuesday at the intersection of E. Broad Street and Eastside Drive, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Adela Portillo. The Statesville Police Department reported that Henry Baker, 64, was driving the Porsche Cayenne westbound on E. Broad Street and attempted to turn left onto Eastside Drive when he failed to yield to oncoming traffic, striking Portillo's motorcycle. Portillo sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Iredell Memorial Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries despite life-saving efforts. ALSO READ: Motorcyclist hospitalized following crash with gas truck in Catawba County Further investigation revealed open containers inside Baker's vehicle at the time of the collision, leading to his arrest on Wednesday. Baker has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, failure to yield the right of way, and possession of an open container after consuming alcohol, and was issued a $10,000 secured bond. The Traffic Division of the Statesville Police Department is continuing its investigation into the collision and urges anyone with information to contact them at 704-878-3406. Charlotte man sentenced to 46 months after 2023 arrest in Statesville

A convicted felon from Charlotte has been sentenced to 46 months in prison for illegal possession of a firearm and machinegun, according to the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Western District in North Carolina. Trevaris Devar Kennedy, 21, was arrested by the Statesville Police Department in December of 2023. Authorities say Kennedy was a passenger in a car with an expired registration tag that sped away from police. The driver of the car led police on a foot chase. Two firearms were thrown from the car: a Glock, Model 19, 9mm, and a stolen Glock, Model 26, 9mm. Both of the guns were modified, officials say. A total of 55 rounds and mm9 ammunition were also found. ALSO READ: 5 charged with unlawful firearm possession in NC under Project Safe Neighborhoods Kennedy was arrested a month later on gun charges and police found videos and photos on his phone of him holding firearms that were also illegally modified. When he was arrested, Kennedy was already on probation for prior criminal convictions. He was not allowed to possess firearms or ammunition at the time, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. Kennedy is now in federal custody and will be transferred to the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons once he is designated for a federal facility.
