Adam Sandler spotted playing pickup basketball in North Jersey park
Adam Sandler made himself at home in North Jersey over the past year, having been spotted in various businesses and public spaces while filming movie scenes.
Most recently, the actor and comedian popped up in Montclair to take part in one of his favorite activities: basketball.
A video of Sandler shooting hoops with a small group in Rand Park was posted to TikTok June 22 by user "saevista." The clip had already been viewed nearly 1 million times by the following day, in addition to hundreds of thousands of views on Instagram pages such as The Garden State and Stay Jersey.
The 10-second video features two brief clips of Sandler, sporting his signature outfit of a Hawaiian shirt and baggy basketball shorts, engaged in a two-on-two game with three other boys on the Montclair court. The actor starts by making a pass and setting a pick for his teammate, while in the second clip, he fakes a shot before driving to the basket and making a layup.
Sandler is no stranger to the pickup basketball scene. An ESPN story from November highlighted the actor's propensity for dropping in for games at random basketball courts, much to the astonishment of onlookers and fellow players.
The video from Montclair prompted thousands of comments across social media, with some locals lamenting their missed chance at meeting Sandler. Others were amused to see an actor of Sandler's stature blending in seamlessly to the general public — aside from the brightly colored shirt.
"Adam Sandler is the most non-celebrity celebrity," one TikTok user wrote.
Sandler's latest North Jersey appearance comes just over a month before the premiere of "Happy Gilmore 2," which will be available on Netflix July 25. The sequel to the 1996 film starring Sandler was shot throughout New Jersey last fall, with residents and officials in several towns posting about the cast and crew visiting the area for filming.
The local hype for the movie began last summer, when producers held an open casting call for extras in Morristown. The call resulted in thousands of people showing up in hopes of being cast, with a line stretching through the town and backing up traffic.
