Russell Wilson Grateful for Time with Steelers: ‘Pittsburgh Was a Good Place for Me'

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson runs out of the tunnel before a game against the Cleveland Browns on Dec. 8, 2024. -- Ed Thompson / Steelers Now Despite things not working out, Russell Wilson has had nothing but good things to say about the Pittsburgh Steelers organization since departing to New York. He was complimentary of the Steelers during his introductory press conference with the Giants in March, and he had similar sentiments during a recent interview on 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony. 'Pittsburgh was a good place for me,' Wilson said. 'It really helped rejuvenate me in every way because of the locker room there, the pros, guys like T.J. Watt and Cam Heyward, guys like Miles Killebrew, those captains. And then just the guys I was around, the hard work those guys put in. Advertisement 'I remember seeing a guy like Calvin Austin III, young star, who just wanted to be great, came to San Diego, wanted to work with me. Just guys that I really appreciate. Guys like Najee Harris and how he went about practicing hard every day. Different guys you get to know, teammates like Dan Moore, who I got to be really close with, and many others.' Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson at practice for the 2025 NFL Pro Bowl Games on Feb. 1, 2025. — Alan Saunders / Steelers Now Wilson signed a one-year deal worth up to $21 million, including $10.5 million guaranteed with the Giants this offseason. Wilson, 36, spent the 2024 season with the Steelers in what was a tale of two halves. After returning from a calf injury in Week 7, Wilson helped rattle off six wins in seven games. But his play took a downturn on the team's five-game losing streak to end the season. Advertisement During that span, the Steelers failed to score more than 17 points in every game, a streak that hasn't occurred since Chuck Noll's first season in 1969. It's safe to say that left a sour taste in the Steelers mouths and played a role in Wilson not returning. Wilson reportedly also didn't see eye to eye with Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. In February, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Smith did not want Russell Wilson changing plays at the line of scrimmage despite the QB's big game in the Week 13 win over Cincinnati. The Steelers scored a season-high 44 points against the Bengals and Wilson posted an impressive 414 yards passing to go along with three touchdown passes. Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger confirmed on his Footbahlin podcast with Pat McAfee that Smith was not fond of Wilson changing play at the line of scrimmage. Advertisement 'Arthur Smith has to understand he has to let the quarterback have some rein,' Roethlisberger said. 'I was told he really pulled the reins back on Russ. In the two-minute drill, wouldn't let Russ call his own plays. You have to let a quarterback do that stuff.' Is Aaron Rodgers Key to Steelers Avoiding Losing Season?

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers after a game on Oct. 20, 2024. -- Ed Thompson / Steelers Now Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Ben Roethlisberger believes that the 2025 season will be the first losing season under head coach Mike Tomlin, if the team is unable to secure the services of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On the latest episode of his Footbahlin podcast on Tuesday, Roethlisberger predicted the Steelers' record with and without Rodgers, who remains a free agent with no update on when or if he might sign with the Steelers, just six days before the start of OTAs. With Rodgers in the fold, Roethlisberger sees the Steelers as an 11-6 team. But if the quarterbacking is left to current starter Mason Rudolph, Roethlisberger sees the Steelers finishing 7-10, for the team's first losing season with Tomlin at the helm. Advertisement But if the Steelers are able to sign Rodgers, as has been widely speculated, Roethlisberger sees them finishing in good shape at 11-6. 'HOF,' he said, referencing Rodgers' future as a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. 'That'll get you a few more wins.' Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph in a game against the Cleveland Browns on Jan. 3, 2021. — Ed Thompson / Steelers Now A four-win difference between Rodgers and Rudolph is not crazy, though it should be noted that Rodgers went 6-12 as a starter over the last two seasons with the New York Jets, while Rudolph 4-4 eight starts between Pittsburgh in 2023 and the Tennessee Titans last season. Still, Pittsburgh's quarterback situation appears to be fairly dire if the team is unable to land Rodgers. Pro Football Focus placed Rudolph among the worst quarterbacks in the NFL current in a starting role earlier on Tuesday. Advertisement PFF suggested that the Steelers could start sixth-round rookie Will Howard instead of Rudolph, if they don't end up landing Rodgers. With OTAs starting on Tuesday, it's unclear how much longer the Steelers will be wiling to be patient with Rodgers, who has said that personal issues have kept him from making a decision about his future. How Much More Patience Can Steelers Have with Aaron Rodgers?

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers during a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 20, 2024. -- Ed Thompson / Steelers Now The Pittsburgh Steelers are going on two months of not knowing what Aaron Rodgers will do. It may be time to end their patience. The Pittsburgh Steelers, along with the entire NFL, have been in limbo with the Aaron Rodgers saga. From conspiracies to targeted dates, and even talks of retirement, it seems no one really knows what is going on with the four-time MVP. While Rodgers gives them the best chance to win in 2025, it has set an odd precedent, and the Steelers' patience must end–now. Advertisement Rodgers has some gas left in the tank. There's no doubt about that. However, whether or not he wants to play is. As Chuck Noll once said, 'If you're thinking about retiring, you already are.' Rodgers went as far as going on Pat McAfee's show and hinted it was still an option. The last time Pittsburgh had a quarterback dance with the thought of retiring was from 2016 to 2021. Ben Roethlisberger, following a loss in the 2016 AFC Championship, openly contemplated retirement. Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger attending Day 1 of OTAs on May 21, 2024 — Ed Thompson / Steelers Now General manager Kevin Colbert responded by drafting Josh Dobbs in the fourth-round of the 2017 draft and Mason Rudolph in the third-round of the 2018 draft. Both of these irked Roethlisberger, but those talks slowed until 2021, when it was clear he may not have much game left. Advertisement Now the Steelers are square dancing with Rodgers and retirement. Rather, Rodgers is calling the square dance with the Steelers, the NFL, and the media. He is in total control. To Rodgers' defense, there's nothing wrong with him controlling his situation. This is the first time he has truly been a free agent. This is a mess Pittsburgh created on its own. Regardless of the mess to this point, with OTA's, minicamp, and training camp approaching, the Steelers have decisions to make. One might see these and think, 'Oh, well, he can wait until this date, or this, or this…' At one point, it was reported that the Steelers gave a 'hard deadline' of the draft for Rodgers to decide. That time came and passed, the report was refuted, and the Steelers are left in mystery. Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers after a game on Oct. 20, 2024. — Ed Thompson / Steelers Now Then, at one point, it was speculated that Rodgers wanted to wait until after the NFL's schedule release. That time has also come and gone. Why should Pittsburgh continue to wait? Advertisement Eventually, the Steelers might have players questioning if Rodgers is all-in–if they haven't by now. While head coach Mike Tomlin has treated his men all fairly but not equally, this is dangerous territory. Ultimately, Rodgers might sign with the Steelers as early as tomorrow. This then all becomes a distant memory, and he participates in the rest of the offseason. Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph in a playoff game against the Buffalo Bills on Jan. 15, 2024. — Ed Thompson / Steelers Now However, the Steelers must put an end to their patience; set an actual hard deadline. If you're telling the fans you're comfortable with Rudolph, prove it. As your defensive captain indirectly said to Rodgers in his podcast, 'Either you want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler or you don't. That's simple.' This article originally appeared on Steelers Now: How Much More Patience Can Steelers Have with Aaron Rodgers?

Aaron Rodgers Reveals Reason For Delay In Decision

Aaron Rodgers joined a podcast and revealed at some of the personal struggles he is facing in light of his future's pending decision. While the Pittsburgh Steelers are headed towards the next phase of the offseason, questions have remained about the quarterback position, specifically whether Aaron Rodgers will come to Pittsburgh. The Steelers have remained patient, and Rodgers revealed the reason for his delayed decision in a podcast appearance. Advertisement Rodgers joined The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast, which was published today. The four-time MVP and Rogan discussed politics, health, and medicine. He also revealed some of the personal things he's dealing with. New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers during a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 20, 2024. — Ed Thompson / Steelers Now 'I've figured it out the last year when I've been in the weeds with these people who are close to me that have cancer.' Rodgers said when discussing cancer innovation. The former Green Bay Packer and New York Jet hinted at some issues in his personal life when he appeared on the Pat McAfee Show earlier this offseason. 'I have off-the-field stuff going on that requires my attention. I have personal commitments I have made. I have a couple of people in my inner, inner circle who are battling some difficult stuff. So, I have a lot of things that are taking my attention.' He told McAfee. Advertisement This may be the reason the Steelers have waited to this point with Rodgers. Some things are bigger than football. Regardless, as the offseason picks up towards mandatory camps, Rodgers sounded like someone who may be content with retirement, which he also told McAfee. Ultimately, the Steelers are on Rodgers' time clock if they elect to wait this out. They had the opportunity to retain Justin Fields or Russell Wilson. Instead, they both found their way to New York.
