Swedish FM: Israel committing war crime by starving civilians in Gaza
Stockholm – Saba: Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergaard said on Thursday that Israel's use of starvation as a method of warfare against civilians is prohibited and a flagrant violation of international law. During a press conference, Stenergaard added that depriving civilians of food, water, and medicine constitutes a war crime under international law, stressing the urgent need to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. She emphasized that "the situation in Gaza is catastrophic, and it is essential that food, water, and medicine quickly reach the severely affected civilians, most of whom are women and children, who are currently living in completely inhumane conditions." Stenergaard noted that "life-saving humanitarian aid must not be subject to political bargaining or used for military purposes." Last month, Sweden summoned the Israeli ambassador to protest the lack of humanitarian aid for civilians in the Gaza Strip. It is worth noting that the Kingdom of Sweden officially recognized the State of Palestine on October 30, 2014. With American and European support, the Israeli enemy army has continued to commit genocidal crimes in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, resulting in the deaths of 55,207 Palestinian citizens, the majority of whom were children and women, and the injury of 127,821 others. This is a preliminary toll, with thousands of victims still buried under the rubble and on the streets, unable to be reached by ambulances and rescue crews. Whatsapp Telegram Email Print

Sweden moves to impose European sanctions on Israeli ministers over civilian suffering in Gaza
Stockholm - Saba: Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergaard on Tuesday announced that her country will move within the European Union to push for sanctions against specific Israeli government ministers over Israel's treatment of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. "As long as we do not see a clear improvement in the situation of civilians in Gaza, we need to escalate our rhetoric," the Swedish Foreign Minister said in a statement in Brussels on Tuesday. "We will therefore now also push for the European Union to impose sanctions on specific Israeli ministers," she added. She explained that the sanctions will target "ministers who are advancing an illegal settlement policy," adding that the targeted officials will be the subject of discussion within the EU. Stenergaard noted that Sweden "in all its contacts with the Israeli government has called for increased access to humanitarian aid and strongly criticized its failure to provide it." She noted that Sweden is concerned about "how the Israeli government continues to escalate the situation, both in terms of statements and actions." Whatsapp Telegram Email Print
