Bummer, dude: X Games won't make its debut at Cal Expo in Sacramento next summer after all.
Bummer, dude: X Games won't make its debut at Cal Expo in Sacramento next summer after all.
Event organizers announced Friday afternoon the postponement of the planned August X Games at Cal Expo, citing a shifting focus to instead launching the action sports-oriented X Games League in summer 2026.
"As we prepare to launch the X Games League later this year, we've taken a step back to reexamine how we deliver the most exceptional, high-energy experience for our athletes, fans and host cities,' said Jeremy Bloom, CEO of X Games, said in a news release announcing the move. 'We determined that postponing Sacramento allows us to give the launch of the X Games League the full focus it deserves."
But the release emphasized X Games isn't walking away from bringing its annual event to Cal Expo entirely, simply pushing back when it will happen. Since its founding, X Games has been the venue for top-level competition in sports like skateboarding and BMX, typically spending about three years in host cities for its summer event.
A request for comment sent to a media representative for Cal Expo wasn't immediately returned.
The announcement came before tickets for X Games at Cal Expo went on sale. In announcing the event coming to Sacramento last December, organizers from California Dreamin' Entertainment said it would be here for 2025, 2026 and 2027.
Next summer would've marked the 30th year for X Games, and Visit Sacramento. the city's convention and visitors bureau, estimated its economic impact on the region at $7 million.
California Dreamin' representatives had also said bringing the X Games here was tied to a planned revamp of the former Ragin' Waters water park at Cal Expo, closed since 2022.
Steve Dooner, CEO of California Dreamin', said he hoped to make Sacramento the permanent home for the X Games.
It wasn't immediately clear how or if the postponement would affect those plans.
