Volunteers gear up for huge desert cleanup before Las Vegas Mint 400 race
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Volunteers will head into the southern Nevada desert for a massive cleanup to remove thousands of pounds of trash ahead of the Mint 400 Off-Road Race.
In 2024, volunteers were able to collect 41 tons. Steve Orrico, community relations manager with Republic Services said anyone who wants to pitch in can show up to the annual event. Over the past eight years, 229 tons of trash have been removed from the desert in Jean, Nevada.
'The waste collected over the years has included everything from boats and hot tubs to cars, TVs, and fire extinguishers,' Orrico said. 'You name it, we've hauled it in.'
The cleanup takes place on Saturday, March 1, at 10 a.m. Volunteers can show up to help pick up trash along areas of the 100-mile Mint 400 course. It's advised volunteers bring gloves and wear comfortable shoes. Orrico said the meeting site is about a mile north of the Magic Mountains.
'It'll be a big happening,' he added. 'The more the merrier.'Republic Services will provide large dumpsters and four big trucks to haul away the collected waste. Volunteers will receive t-shirts and be entered into a raffle.
The Mint 400 race takes place from March 5 – 9, 2025. More details can be found at this link.
