Longview holds meeting to discuss potential amphitheater
LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK) — After around five years, the proposed amphitheater project has come back into discussion for Longview's City Council.
House budget proposal cuts SNAP, Medicaid in major rollback
A work session meeting was held to hear from the project's lead, Steve Powers.
'It's a really good opportunity to bring lots of excitement, some jobs, and you know, cool facilities,' Red Cat Projects' Steve Powers said.
The proposed project would sit right off 1-20 and create an outdoor amphitheater with a 10,000 person capacity. In a presentation to the city council, Powers said it could host over 30 concerts per year and also employ more than 200 local people.
'The location is what the key is here,' Powers said. 'Just being on I-20, you're right outside the radius clause for Dallas.'
The city council asked questions about the entertainment district project presented alongside the amphitheater.
'I feel like the important part is that we just don't have that entertainment district, since we don't know what's going to be there,' City of Longview Mayor Kristen Ishihara said.
Some council members said more information is needed to make sure they support a viable project and other members said they support new developments and would like to create a quality of life area for young people. Despite concerns brought up by council members, Powers said he remains optimistic and hopes to have the proposed amphitheater open by 2027.

'That's our goal, and we think the city deserves it,' Powers said.
