Nolan Arenado's ninth-inning RBI double lifts the Cardinals over the Dodgers 2-1

Nolan Arenado delivered a pinch-hit RBI double in the ninth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals stifled the Los Angeles Dodgers' offense for a second straight game in a 2-1 victory on Saturday. Nolan Gorman led off the ninth with a ground-rule double before being replaced with a pinch runner. After Pedro Pages reached on an error by pitcher Ben Casparius (4-1), the Dodgers vacated left field to play with five infielders, and Arenado's lazy fly ball landed just inside the foul line and bounced into the stands for another ground-rule double. The Dodgers, who lead the majors in scoring, home runs and batting average, were held scoreless for the first 17 innings of the series, but managed to tie it when Shohei Ohtani scored on a wild pitch by Ryan Helsley (3-0) in the top of the ninth. It was the second straight blown save for Helsley. Masyn Winn raced home on Alec Burleson's infield single to put St. Louis ahead 1-0 in the eighth inning. Erick Fedde walked four and struck out two in 5 1-3 scoreless innings, giving up four singles. He allowed the first two batters to reach in the sixth before striking out Andy Pages. Steven Matz retired the next two batters to end that threat. Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto struck out nine in six scoreless innings, allowing four singles and two walks. Key moment After getting drilled in the right forearm with a line drive from Mookie Betts that went for the Dodgers' second infield single of the inning, Matz got NL batting leader Freddie Freeman to ground into an inning-ending double play in the seventh to keep it scoreless. Key stat The Dodgers have not been shut out in consecutive games since losing back-to-back 1-0 games against the San Francisco Giants to start the 2018 season. Up next The Cardinals are expected to call up RHP Michael McGreevy (1-0, 0.00 ERA) to make his second start of the season Sunday against Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw (0-0, 5.17). McGreevy threw 5 2-3 scoreless innings in a win against the Mets on May 4.

Royals erase 5-run deficit, ride bullpen to win over Cardinals

June 4 - Bobby Witt Jr. had a homer and four RBIs as the visiting Kansas City Royals rallied past the St. Louis Cardinals 10-7 on Tuesday night. Vinny Pasquantino and Maikel Garcia each drove in two runs for the Royals, who erased a 7-2 deficit. Jonathan India went 3-for-5 with three runs and Nick Loftin hit a solo homer. Royals starter Michael Lorenzen allowed seven runs on seven hits and a walk in 2 2/3 innings. He struck out two. But Royals relievers Daniel Lynch IV, Steven Cruz (2-0), Angel Zerpa, John Schreiber, Taylor Clarke and Carlos Estevez (17th save) combined to blank the Cardinals from there. Nolan Gorman and Alec Burleson hit two-run homers for the Cardinals, who have lost three of their last four games. Andre Pallante allowed seven runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out two and walked none. Reliever Steven Matz (3-2) took the loss. The Royals took a 2-0 first-inning lead. India led off the game with a single and Witt hit a two-run blast for just his second homer in 23 games. The Cardinals tied the game in the second inning on a Burleson single and Gorman's homer off the glove of leaping center fielder Kyle Isbel. St. Louis moved ahead 7-2 in the third inning. Masyn Winn hit a single, Brendan Donovan walked and Willson Contreras hit a ground-rule double to notch his 500th career RBI. Nolan Arenado hit a run-scoring infield single, then another run scored on third baseman Garcia's throwing error. Burleson followed with a two-run homer. Kansas City surged ahead 8-7 in the fifth inning. Loftin's homer started the comeback, then Drew Waters, Isbel and India hit singles, followed by a two-run single by Witt. After Pasquantino greeted Matz with a two-run double, Salvador Perez hit an RBI single. The Royals pushed their lead to 10-7 in the sixth inning off Matz and Kyle Leahy. Isbel and India hit singles, Witt walked and Garcia hit a two-run single. --Field Level Media

Arenado's tiebreaking homer in the 8th helps the Cardinals beat the Orioles 7-4

BALTIMORE (AP) — Nolan Arenado hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Baltimore Orioles 7-4 on Tuesday night. The Orioles were on a season-high three-game winning streak, but they reverted to old habits, going 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position. The lone hit was a three-run homer by Ryan O'Hearn that gave Baltimore a 4-3 lead in the fifth, but the Cardinals responded with a run in the seventh and three in the eighth off the Orioles' bullpen. Bryan Baker (3-1) gave up Arenado's solo shot with one out in the eighth, and then Nolan Gorman and Jordan Walker followed with consecutive triples that eluded Baltimore outfielders. Masyn Winn's RBI single made it 7-4. St. Louis took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on Lars Nootbaar's two-run homer off Tomoyuki Sugano. The Orioles finally scored on Cardinals starter Andre Pallante in the fourth. Defensive sloppiness in that inning allowed Baltimore to load the bases with nobody out. The Orioles nearly came away with nothing when Jorge Mateo struck out and Heston Kjerstad hit a potential double play ball to second, but first baseman Alec Burleson couldn't handle Winn's bouncing throw and Kjerstad was safe with an RBI fielder's choice. O'Hearn put Baltimore ahead in the fifth, but the Orioles failed to score in the sixth after Mateo singled and stole second and third. Chadwick Tromp struck out for the second out, and Steven Matz (3-1) came on and retired Jackson Holliday on a grounder to end the inning. Ryan Helsley pitched the ninth for his 11th save in 13 chances. Key moments The Orioles squandered man-on-second, nobody-out situations in the second and sixth. Key stats St. Louis has won 11 of its last 17 road games after losing 10 of its first 11. Up next Miles Mikolas (4-2) starts for St. Louis against Cade Povich (1-3) in Wednesday night's series finale, weather permitting. ___ AP MLB:
