Livingston 'deserve' Premiership step-up, says striker as he leaves with his head held high

Stevie May doesn't yet know what the future holds, but is proud to have played his part in Livingston's promotion Stevie May leaves Livingston with his head held high and reckons they deserve another crack at the Premiership. The Lions bounced back to the top-flight at the first time of asking with a play-off win over Ross County, pitching the Dingwall club into the Championship. ‌ May, 32, who doesn't know where his future lies after his release from a second spell at St Johnstone, says Livi have proved all season that they're good enough to mix it with the big boys. ‌ He said: 'Getting promoted is huge for the club, especially with the new owners coming in. 'This club deserves to be in the Premiership, because this team is good enough. 'I've played there for a lot of years and this team feels like a top league team. 'There is so much experience and quality in the dressing room. 'I would think 80 per cent of the players have played in the Premiership, there's no doubting there's the base there to go back up and do well.' Livingston were 2-0 down in Dingwall, but goals from Lewis Smith, Danny Wilson, Robbie Muirhead and Tete Yengi completed a stirring fightback at 4-2 on the night and 5-3 on aggregate. ‌ May said: 'You have seen in the play-offs before that teams can come back, and these things do happen. 'We've done that all season, to be fair, the boys have some bottle. In the league we came back a few times to win points from those positions, so we always believed we could do it. ‌ 'This team always keeps going at it, and you could see how strong we were as the game went on.' Though he didn't play as often as he would have liked in the last two months, May scored 10 goals in 46 games for David Martindale's side, and the former Aberdeen and Sheffield Wednesday striker enjoyed his time. He said: 'It has been a great season. I just wanted to come here and play. I haven't played as much in the last month or two, but the boys have been doing really well. ‌ 'We have gone with a bigger presence up front, and Robbie Muirhead scored some great goals. 'I was just there to do my job when I came on off the bench, and try to make an impact in games. 'I've started 30-odd games, won a cup and now won promotion, so it has been a great year.' ‌ As a St Johnstone fan from Perth, May wasn't happy to see his side relegated at the end of the season, as his contract ends, but said: 'I've been successful there. I've made memories that will last a lifetime.' As for what is next, May didn't close the door on a permanent return to Almondvale. ‌ He said: 'I don't know what the future holds. I'll have to see what happens in the next few weeks. 'We've all been concentrating on the play-offs, but now they're out of the way I can start to think about it. 'We'll see what the manager says and what he wants to do. 'He's been big on everyone concentrating on the job in hand, then we'd talk about things.'

Stevie May among St Johnstone departures 16 years after making debut

St Johnstone have announced that cup-winning striker Stevie May will officially depart, 16 years after making his debut for the club. The 32-year-old striker has spent most of the past season on loan at Livingston and is one of several players who will not have his contract at Saints renewed when it expires later this month as Simo Valakari starts his squad rebuild following relegation to the Championship. May came through the ranks with the Perth club and made his first appearance as a 16-year-old in May 2009 before developing into a key member of the first team, helping Saints win the first major trophy in their history when they landed the 2014 Scottish Cup final. He left later that summer to join Sheffield Wednesday and after stints at Preston and Aberdeen, he returned to McDiarmid Park in 2019 and was part of the squad that won both the League Cup and Scottish Cup in 2021. 'A role model on and off the field of play, we thank Stevie greatly for everything he has done for us across both spells with the club and we wish him all the very best for his next steps in football,' read a Saints statement confirming his departure after 267 appearances for the club. Barry Douglas, Benjamin Kimpioka, Cammy MacPherson, Graham Carey, Matthew Smith, Max Kucheriavyi and Nicky Clark will also leave Saints, while on-loan players Andy Fisher, Elliot Watt, Sam Curtis, Stephen Duke-McKenna and Zach Mitchell are set to return to their parent clubs. Martindale says Livingston can play without pressure in play-off final

David Martindale believes the pressure is off his Livingston side after they booked their place in the Premiership play-off final with a comfortable victory over Partick Thistle. The Lions progressed 4-0 on aggregate, securing a second 2-0 win with Jamie Brandon's opener added to by Stevie May's stunning half-volley. They will now face either Dundee or Ross County over two legs, with their opponents to be determined by how the final day of the Premiership season transpires. 'I wasn't pleased with the first half, there looked to be a bit of nervousness,' Martindale said. 'The opening goal settled us down and Stevie May's scored a superb second but the players have done all I could have asked of them. 'It was all about getting through to the final – whether it's Dundee or Ross County, I don't care. 'We were the favourites to get through this play-off but that won't be the case for the final, all of the pressure will be on the Premiership side.' Off the pitch, there was good news for Livi prior to kick-off as the great-grandson of the Ford Motor Company founder Henry Ford was named the new chairman of the club. Calvin Ford became the majority stakeholder after acquiring 100 per cent of John McIlvogue's shares in Baycup Ltd, which has held a significant shareholding in the club since the start of the 2023-24 season. 'We got good news, that's us coming out of the dark ages a wee bit,' Martindale added. 'It's been hell, torture. To bring someone in of that kind of ilk and business background is brilliant for the football club. 'I've always said, whoever comes in, if they want me to stay, then I'll have the conversation. If they don't want me to stay, then I'd gladly leave this football club. 'What Calvin has done is secured Livingston Football Club and put it into good hands — I'm irrelevant in all of this.' Thistle interim co-boss Mark Wilson admits he is unsure as to what his future holds at Firhill. Alongside Brian Graham, Wilson has guided the Firhill side to the play-offs courtesy of victories over Falkirk and Livingston, then mounting an inspired comeback in their quarter-final clash with Ayr. They had their chances at the Home of the Set Fare Arena but found themselves with a mountain to climb when Brandon fired home the opening goal with five minutes remaining in the first half. 'I thought we started incredibly well, we built the play much better than the first leg and the boys were brave,' Wilson said. 'The players were a credit to the club and you saw the fans showing their appreciation at the end. 'It's so important for this club to get into the Premiership so I can understand their frustrations but I hope they see the hard work which has been done. 'I think we've done all we could do, it's been seven days a week and 12-hour days — we've done as much as we can do.'
