Stewart's names new president
This story was originally published on C-Store Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily C-Store Dive newsletter. Stewart's Shops Chief Operating Officer Chad Kiesow has been promoted to president of the family- and employee-owned convenience store chain, effective June 1, according to a company announcement. Kiesow's move to president was three years in the making, CEO Gary Dake said. It marks the first time in Stewart's 80-year history that the convenience retailer has a president who is not part of the founding Dake family. 'Chad has been an integral part of the business since he joined us more than three decades ago,' Dake said in the announcement. 'He understands our bottom-up culture and our focus on taking care of our people and the communities we serve.' Kiesow joined Stewart's in 1994 after the company acquired the Bonfare convenience store chain. He began managing Stewart's gas department and moved to vice president of facilities prior to becoming COO over a year ago. His promotion comes during a growth period for Stewart's, which last year decided to sell its remaining shares in the business to the employees. This ownership transition will occur over the next 15 to 20 years. The company also made its largest acquisition in years in late 2024 by purchasing the 45-store Jolley chain, which operates in Vermont, New York and New Hampshire. Kiesow said while it's 'an honor' to take on more responsibility with Stewart's, his promotion to president 'is not a sign of big changes.' 'I still have the same number of bosses that I had last week,' Kiesow said in the announcement. 'The Dakes have never been shy and they are not the kind of leaders who will sit quietly on the sidelines.' Besides his leadership role with Stewart's — which currently operates about 360 stores in the Northeast — Kiesow serves on the boards of the New York Association of Convenience Stores, the Saratoga Regional YMCA and Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce. State gas price average stays mostly steady
The average price of gasoline in New York is $3.08 per gallon, down 0.6 cents from last week, and the national average is down 4.8 cents from a week ago standing at $3.13. According to GasBuddy data, the national average is up 3.1 cents from a month ago and 43.0 cents lower than a year ago. Prices in New York State are 3.6 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and 56.6 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. 'While the national average didn't fall quite as far as anticipated for Memorial Day, it was still one of the most affordable since 2021 — and, when adjusted for inflation, among the cheapest in nearly a decade,' Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said. 'As we move into the heart of summer, I believe we're likely to see a relatively stable stretch for gas prices as refinery maintenance wraps up. Don't expect the national average to rise above $3.30 per gallon, nor drop much below $3 for now. While refining issues on the West Coast are beginning to ease, several factors could still influence prices in the weeks ahead — including growing uncertainty around the upcoming hurricane season. We'll also be watching OPEC+'s meeting this week to see if they boost oil production again for July as well.' The top 10% of gas stations have a reported average of $4.60 per gallon and the bottom averaging $2.54. California has the highest average price per gallon at $4.77, followed by Hawaii at $4.46 and Washington at $4.35 The state with the lowest average price is Mississippi at $2.62 per gallon, Louisiana at $2.62 and Alabama at $2.71. The most common price per gallon encountered by motorists in the US remains unchanged at $2.99. As of Tuesday, May 27 these are the reported prices per gallon from stations around the North Country. Canton Main Street Stewart's sells $10 million lottery ticket
May 14—Canton Main Street Stewart's sells $10 million lottery ticket CANTON — A Stewart's Shops customer in Canton recently struck it rich, winning $10 million with a $10 Million Bonus scratch-off ticket purchased at the convenience store on East Main Street. According to a press release from Stewart's, the lucky customer, who enjoys coffee and playing the lottery, bought the winning ticket on May 3. Stewart's found out about the winner because they returned to the store recently to share the news, according to Stewart's Public Relations Manager Robin Cooper. Cooper said the New York State Lottery may be making an announcement soon, depending on the process with the winner. "We just heard it from the folks in our shop," he said. Cooper said he talked to the lottery commission about the win. Brad Maione, a spokesperson for the state Gaming Commission, said a winning ticket from Canton had been confirmed. To determine the veracity of the ticket, a security and integrity review is underway, Maione said, which can take from four to six weeks to complete. Once the ticket is verified, an announcement will be made. The winner has the right to remain anonymous, he said. This marks the second time a Stewart's Shops customer has won a jackpot of more than $1 million this year. Earlier this year, a customer at the Sharon Springs, Schoharie County, location won a $3.37 million lump-sum payment with a Set For Life ticket. The winner at the Canton Stewart's was playing a $30, $10,000,000 Bonus scratch-off ticket. The ticket operates similarly to other lottery scratch-off games. Players match their numbers to the winning numbers. The game features multipliers, and revealing a coin symbol where a player's number matches automatically wins the prize. Stewart's Shops reported that more than 15 of its customers, including the Canton winner, have won prizes of $10,000 or more playing scratch-off tickets at various locations this year, for a total of more than $15 million.

Stewart's Shops proposes bigger store on North Massey Street
Apr. 27—WATERTOWN — Stewart's Shops plans to demolish its North Massey Street store and replace it with a bigger and better shop. The Ballston Spa-based company has proposed constructing a 4,500-square-foot store at the current location at Coffeen and North Massey streets. The new store will be able to sell more to-go items and grocery selections, said Chuck Marshall, real estate representative for the chain of convenience stores. The new Stewart's Shops will have the same number of four fueling stations as does the existing store. "We're excited about bringing the same success we've had," Marshall said. The existing store is slated to be torn down this spring, with construction of the new store to begin in July. The new store is scheduled to open in November. The company has already purchased and demolished a house behind the existing store at 319 Coffeen St. An adjacent house at 327 Coffeen St. that's under contract with the company also will be torn down to make way for the new store, Marshall said. A small strip of land owned by Hop Spots will be purchased for the nearly acre site. The project will be reviewed by the Jefferson County Planning Board on Tuesday. A company representative will make a presentation to the city of Watertown Planning Commission on May 6. The new store replaces one that has been at that location for decades. In recent years, Stewart's Shops has replaced its stores with larger stores or expanded into new markets in the north country. Two years ago, Stewart's Shops opened a new $1.5 million store on Washington Street that replaced a smaller store down the street. It was met by grueling opposition from residents who expressed traffic concerns in their neighborhood. The company made several compromises to the new store before the City Council approved the project. But Marshall said the company hasn't received any complaints from residents since the new store opened in December 2022. The company owns three other Stewart's Shops in Watertown, with several others in surrounding north country communities.
