This Bride Chose Her 83-Year-Old Grandma As Bridesmaid
Last Updated:
Bethany Johnston-Sweeney, a 28-year-old teacher from Chorley, England, decided to make her 83-year-old grandmother, Ena, one of her bridesmaids.
A heartwarming video of a grandmother serving as a bridesmaid at her granddaughter's wedding is touching hearts across the internet. The ceremony happened last year but now the moment is catching everyone's attention after the video was shared online. According to People, Bethany Johnston-Sweeney, a 28-year-old teacher from Chorley, England, had always wanted her grandmother to be part of her big day in a special way. After thinking it through, she decided to make her 83-year-old grandmother, Ena, one of her bridesmaids.
Her family wasn't completely surprised by the idea but some did wonder if it would be too much for Ena. 'They thought she might struggle with bridesmaid duties, but I was adamant. They initially thought I was crazy, but I knew she would be fantastic," Bethany told People.
Bethany got married on August 8 last year at the Stirk House Hotel in England. Before the wedding, she gave her grandmother a sweet surprise – a 'bridesmaid proposal" gift box. It had all her favourites: a bottle of Prosecco, a photo of the two of them, a friendship bracelet and a card.
Ena was touched but hesitant at first. 'She initially said she was too old to be a bridesmaid, which is why I came up with the term 'grandmaid,'" Bethany explained.
From the very beginning, Ena was involved in the entire wedding journey like checking out venues, picking the colour scheme and helping choose the wedding dress.
'I wanted her input on everything because we're so close, and I value her opinion," Bethany added.
Bethany also made sure Ena felt good in her outfit. The bridesmaids were allowed to pick their dress styles and colours. The final choice was between blush and red and Ena went with the deeper red shade as seen in the viral video.
Once the video surfaced online, social media users shared their love for the moment. It has also accumulated over two million views.
One user commented, 'This is just adorable."
Another said, 'Having Grandma around for the wedding at all is such a wonderful privilege denied to so many. Thank you for honouring her this way."
'Love this, such a sweet idea," a viewer expressed.
Someone else remarked, 'That is the loveliest thing ever. She looks stunning."
A commenter admitted, 'This makes me want to get married just so I can have granny as a bridesmaid too."
Just a few days ago, a similar touching moment made headlines. As reported by People, Brittany Scovel from Iowa, US, chose to include her grandmother, Dixie Mumford, as one of the bridesmaids in her wedding.
