Coronation Street's fans brand Eileen Grimshaw exit 'boring' and 'dragged out' as the character bids farewell to the cobbles after 25 years

Coronation Street 's Eileen Grimshaw has officially said goodbye to Weatherfield on Friday as fans branded the send off 'dragged out' and 'boring'. Sue Cleaver, who played the iconic ITV character, bid an emotional farewell to the iconic cobbles 25 years after her debut. The actress first appeared on the soap in 2000 when her character moved into number 11 with sons Jason and Todd Grimshaw. And despite the character capturing the hearts of the nation for more than two decades, fans felt show bosses had not given her the send off she deserved as she made a big move to Thailand. Eileen was being suspected in her sister Julie's tragic death but was thankfully was cleared by the police of any wrongdoing. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The beloved resident then decided to make the move to Thailand, and invest in her son Jason's bar. And it wasn't the only big change for her as she also ended her relationship with George after admitting she only loved him as a friend. In her final scenes, Eileen who worked at the StreetCars taxi service alongside Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson), was seen hopping into the back of his cab with Jason. Flocking to social media, TV buffs dubbed the episode as 'boring' which will 'go down in history as one of the most drawn out exits ever'. One penned: 'This will go down in history as one of the most drawn out exits ever,' as another wrote: 'This is a dreadful last episode for a long term character.' 'Well, that send off, wasn't very exciting,' tweeted a third, while another agreed: 'Goodness. Eileen's exit storyline is very, very, VERY bland.' Back in January it was revealed that Sue would be leaving the Cobbles to pursue other projects and two months later it was confirmed that the soap star had already filmed her final scenes. Eileen's exit from the show also included her son Jason, meaning that actor Ryan Thomas, 40, would be reprised his role for the storyline. Flocking to social media, TV buffs dubbed the episode as 'boring' which will 'go down in history as one of the most drawn out exits ever' Speaking to The Mirror about her on-screen son Ryan's involvement in the storyline, Sue said: 'Ryan was there from the start, and he was inconveniently living in Thailand, and it wouldn't be too far of a jump to expect that if Eileen was going to make a leap, that she would involve her son. 'And so when I decided to leave, like over a year ago, I rang Ryan, and I said, 'Ryan, I'm going to tell them that I'm going, and if they ask me about exits, I'd really like to say that you'd come back and take me out, but I don't know whether they'd go for it or not'. 'And he just went, 'Oh my gosh, of course, I would' Which was so lovely for me. 'And it was just so nice to have him back and filming those final scenes with him. It just felt like I'd come full circle really.' Sue isn't the only star who is saying goodbye to the cobbled streets. Mick (Joe Layton and Lou Michaelis (Farrel Hegarty) are leaving in the summer, as well as Adam Hussain who plays Adam Hussain. Sue Devaney, who plays Debbie Webster, is leaving the soap next year, as well as Billy Mayhew star Daniel Brocklebank. Yazmeen Nazir, Max Turner, Rob Donovan, Daisy Midgeley, Julie Carp and Craig Tinker have also left the show. Simon Barlow, Tommy Oprington and Beth Tinker left last year.

George was due to fly to Thailand with Eileen - and fans couldn't believe he'd throw away the money he spent on the ticket. 'Can't see Eileen as a Thai barmaid,' another added, while a third joked: 'Seems they're giving Eileen a boring, miserable exit!' Long-time viewers also felt the storyline was a letdown compared to Eileen's dramatic past. 'Remember when Eileen got her head stuck in the railings? This has been mostly dull and miserable — which sums up Eileen in recent years,' one fan said. Even George's tearful goodbye was mocked, as one said:'George! Coronation Street legend confirms she's not being killed off after 25 years

Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver has revealed the circumstances under which she will leave Coronation Street this year – marking an end to Eileen Grimshaw's 25 years on the cobbles. Joining in May 2000, Eileen soon became one of the soap's most iconic figures, and has been at the heart of some of its biggest storylines, from her feud with Gail Platt (Helen Worth) to her relationship with murderous Pat Phelan (Connor McIntyre). It was announced earlier this year that Eileen would be hanging up her Street Cars radio and departing the Cobbles for good. Her exit comes soon after the death of Eileen's sister, Julie Carp (Katy Cavanagh) whose recent demise has left Eileen questioning her future in Weatherfield. Thankfully, it seems that she will leave under happier circumstances than her recently departed sister… and isn't being killed off. Weighing in during a recent interview, Sue has shared some of the details of her upcoming exit, including a long-awaited reunion with screen son Ryan Thomas. Speaking to The Mirror, Sue shared what the soap had planned for Eileen's goodbye, revealing her part in the character's send-off. 'There was always the risk that they might have killed me off, but they were supportive and said 'Eileen's a big part of the show',' Sue revealed. 'They asked what kind of ending I wanted, and I said I didn't want to call it a day, because I love the place. I said I wanted a happy ending. Basically, the journey Eileen is taking is pretty much what I'm choosing to do.' As a part of that exit, she enlisted Ryan, who played Eileen's son, Jason Grimshaw, for 16 years. 'I asked Ryan to come back over a year ago,'she said. 'He had no intention of coming back into Corrie, but last April I said 'look Ryan, I need you to do me a favour. I've not told work yet, but I'm going to leave and I'd really like you to come back and take me out. 'And bless him, he said: 'well I can't refuse that can I?' 'It was really special and lovely. I felt very supported having him there with me on that final day. We've both got busy lives, but we've always stayed in touch. I'm very fond of him.' Jason's long-awaited return to Weatherfield is in honour of aunt Julie's funeral, where he reunites with mum Eileen and brother Todd (Gareth Pierce). It is believed that Eileen will then decide to pack up and join Jason in Thailand, where he's been living since 2016. Of her choice to leave the soap, Sue said: 'I'm at a stage where I thought it was important to forge a new path for myself. My responsibilities as a parent had ended, and it was the right time for a change. 'It had been in my mind for the last four years to leave, so there's been a lot of preparation and planning and thinking about it and making sure, but it definitely feels right. It's exciting times. I'm not scared about the future. The only scary thing was making the decision that it was time. But once I'd made the decision, I knew it was the right thing for me.' Coronation Street producer Kate Brooks paid tribute to the star, saying: 'We're sad to bid farewell to the wonderful Sue Cleaver. More Trending 'Over the past 25 years, Eileen Grimshaw has been at the heart of some of the most memorable and iconic Corrie storylines, and her onscreen rivalry with Gail Platt will undoubtedly go down in Corrie folklore. 'There's certainly no one quite like Eileen, and her character will be hugely missed on the cobbles. We wish Sue all the very best as she embarks on her next exciting chapter. With Sue already having filmed her final scenes, screen partner Tony Maudsley (who plays George Shuttleworth) shared an image of himself, Sue, Gareth and Ryan in the iconic Grimshaw family home.
