Students' Union polls to be held after 7 years

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is planning to hold elections to Students' Unions in colleges and universities this year, after a gap of seven years. Speaking to reporters here, Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj said, 'Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had earlier promised that Students' Union elections would be held this year.' Efforts are being made to commence the academic session for undergraduate and postgraduate courses by July 15 so that the first semester is completed on time before Dussehra holidays, and students' studies are not hampered during the elections, he said. On the extension of the deadline for admission into undergraduate courses in higher educational institutions under his department, Suraj made it clear that the students will get ample time for admission after the announcement of Class 12 exam results by the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), Odisha. The Class 12 students will be given at least 10 days time to upload their mark-sheets after the publication of their results, he said. Notably, on Tuesday, the government extended the deadline for admission into the degree courses from May 20 to June 1. 'This year, we started the admission process for UG courses earlier than other years, on April 16, so that we could wrap it up at the earliest and the syllabus and the students' elections could be completed on time. Last year, the admission process continued till December,' he said. The previous BJD government had stopped holding college elections since 2018 due to various reasons, including violence on campuses and the Covid-19 pandemic. The BJP, in its 2024 election manifesto, had promised to resume the students' elections after coming to power. Last year in December, the Chief Minister had said that elections to Students' Unions in colleges and universities, which were stopped since 2018, will be held from 2025 academic year. Speaking during the the 49th session of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) of Odisha, Majhi had said, 'Students' Union elections in colleges and universities have not been conducted in the State for many years. I am still at a loss as to why the previous government had stopped it.'

Much-loved black and white campus cat has died

A much-loved black and white cat who was "part of the family" at the University of Worcester has died. Staff posted a notice on Facebook to say they were very sad to share that Toby, their "beloved campus cat", had passed away. "Toby wasn't just a familiar face – he was a friend to many," they said. "Whether you stopped for a quick cuddle on the way to class or followed his adventures online, he brought a smile to countless people across our community." The post said Sara Corfield, "Toby's mum", had asked for anyone with photographs to share them either in the comments or as a direct message. The pictures are being passed to her so she can see how much he meant to everyone on campus. "Thank you to everyone who looked out for him over the years – Toby truly was part of the Worcester family," the tribute said. During his time at Worcester, Toby became an international social media sensation with his own Instagram page and merchandise. His social media biography described the kitty as studying Meowcanics. The famous feline had his own mural and students welcomed him into their accommodation. He was described as the "unofficial face of the Students' Union" and was known for roaming around campus, sheltering under the table tennis tables, and was loved by students as if he was their own pet, the BBC was told last year. Staffordshire students feel "cheated" over graduation venue change

More than 1,000 students have signed a petition against a change of venue for their graduation University of Staffordshire has decided to move the event from the Grade II-listed King's Hall in Stoke-on-Trent to the £40m Catalyst building on campus in the students against the plan have argued that the university-owned building would not be as prestigious a venue to hold the officials said hosting the graduation on campus would make travel easier and would also mean ground-level access for all attendees. Student Sophie Grainger-Baird said she felt "cheated" by the change from the ornate Victorian building and that the day would not be as special for her in the new venue."Graduation has been a motivation for me; the fact that I have an end goal in sight is a reason for me to keep going," she said."I feel I have been cheated. I've been tempted to not show up and not graduate."She believed the university had taken the decision without the students in mind."We're just money to them," she added. Student Amy Fern, who has also signed the petition, recalled her first day at the university. "They bring everyone into the King's Hall; they say this is where you start and this is where you will graduate in three years time once you have done your degree," she felt the university had broken that promise that they had made to students on the first day."We were sold the promise on our first day that we were going to graduate at the King's Hall, and now the university have gone back on that promise," she added. A university spokesperson said it had received feedback relating to accessibility and travel and had worked with the Students' Union to improve its graduation added by hosting graduation on campus, the university was able to remove the need for coaches and ensure ground-level access for all attendees."The Catalyst was designed to host major university events, and we are proud to continue using it for that purpose," they said."It provides a sustainable, accessible, and fitting venue for one of the most important occasions in the academic calendar."They said they were confident the decision would enable them to deliver a memorable graduation celebration.
