Zelenskyy urges Norwegian PM to invest in Ukrainian drones
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has met with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in Vilnius to discuss, among other things, investment in the production of Ukrainian drones. The president briefed Støre on Ukraine's key needs, including the need to strengthen air defence. Zelenskyy and Støre discussed the possibility of purchasing an additional air defence system for Ukraine with the support of the Nordic countries. They also focused on direct investments in Ukraine's defence industry, especially drone production. Støre stressed that Norway is already a member of the drone coalition and is ready to do more. Background: Zelenskyy was in Vilnius to take part in a summit of the Bucharest Nine and Nordic countries. At the summit, Zelenskyy told his counterparts that the Security Service of Ukraine's Operation Spider's Web has demonstrated that Ukraine is capable of effective tactical solutions in the war with Russia and can inflict tangible losses that push the Russians to consider diplomacy. Finnish president and Norwegian PM express cautious optimism about achieving ceasefire in Ukraine
At a press conference on 9 May in Oslo, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stated that they believe that current efforts to establish a ceasefire in Ukraine are moving in the right direction. Later, they also spoke again with Zelenskyy during the JEF summit. Quote from Stubb: "I feel carefully optimistic that at this particular moment in time, we're moving in the right direction, both militarily on the ground, as Zelenskyy has pointed out, and also in terms of the ceasefire and the peace process." Norway, Sweden and Denmark back Ukraine 30-day ceasefire plan
"We need a ceasefire, an unconditional ceasefire, first," Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) coalition in Oslo. "That needs to be monitored and respected before you can move into the negotiations on the big issues to reach a lasting peace," he added. The JEF comprises 10 countries -- Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK -- and was set up to rapidly respond to crises. Støre said that during a dinner on Thursday with leaders from the coalition member countries they had contact with both US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss the proposal. "We also stress the need for accountability of such a ceasefire, and if it's not respected, there should be sanctions imposed," Støre said. Advertisement Trump on Thursday called for "a 30-day unconditional ceasefire" on his Truth Social network after speaking to Zelensky. Trump said that "both countries will be held accountable for respecting the sanctity of these direct negotiations" to halt the conflict, which started when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. "This is a concerted approach that is now being sent by the US, by the Europeans and by Ukraine," Støre said.

Norway PM Støre interrupted by protesters during Labour Day speech
Protesters held up banners criticising investments by Norway's sovereign wealth fund in Israel. The protest generated so much noise that Støre was forced to temporarily halt the speech, national broadcaster NRK reported. The head of the Labour Day committee then asked the demonstrators to quiet down and let Støre speak before he could resume. 'This is a public gathering in Norway, full of passion, including lots of passion about Gaza. I understand that very well,' Støre told NRK shortly after the speech. The PM said he believed most people at Youngstorget had come to hear what he had to say, despite the protest. May 1st customs in Norway include politicians and union leaders making speeches throughout the country, highlighting the importance of workers' rights and protection. The UN's top court is this week hearing a case on Israel's humanitarian obligations towards Palestinians, more than 50 days into its total blockade on aid entering war-ravaged Gaza according to news agency AFP. Norway led a resolution adopted by a large majority at the UN General Assembly late last year, asking the ICJ for an advisory opinion on the matter "on a priority basis and with the utmost urgency". Norway's initiative was triggered by an Israeli law banning the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, from operating on Israeli soil. The sovereign wealth fund is the money the Norwegian state generates from oil. Norway puts its oil revenues into the Government Pension Fund, the largest sovereign wealth fund in the world. This allows Norwegian oil revenues to generate more money through investment in over 9,000 companies across the globe.
