Ireland fast bowler Liam McCarthy made his T20I debut on Sunday (June 15) against the West Indies in Bready, Northern Ireland, but it turned out to be a nightmare for him as he conceded 81 runs in his quota of four overs.
He was introduced to the attack in the fifth over of West Indies' innings, and on the first two balls, West Indies T20I captain Shai Hope hammered him for two back-to-back sixes. Evin Lewis then joined the party by hitting four on the fourth and fifth balls to help the West Indies team score a total of 21 runs from his first over.
In his second over, Lewis smacked 6, 4, 4, and 4 runs on the first four balls, and on the last ball, Hope also scored a boundary to help the West Indies add 24 more runs to their total.
In McCarthy's third over of the match, Shimron Hetmyer scored four on the first, fifth, and sixth balls, and Keacy Carty also scored a boundary on the third ball of the over to collect a total of 18 runs. In his final over, Liam conceded one four and two sixes against Carty to finish his quota of four overs with 81 runs.
Only Musa Jobarteh of Gambia has conceded more runs in a T20I match than McCarthy.
During the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Sub Regional Africa Qualifier Group B match played between Gambia and Zimbabwe in Nairobi (Ruaraka) on October 23, 2024, Musa conceded 93 runs in four overs.
For the West Indies, Lewis scored 91 runs from 44 balls with the help of 7 fours and 8 sixes, and Hope smashed 51 runs from just 27 balls with the help of 4 fours and as many sixes. The duo added 122 runs in 10.3 overs for the first wicket.
Later in the death overs, Carty remained unbeaten on 49 runs from 22 balls, and Romario Shepherd scored 19 runs from six balls to help West Indies post a total of 256/5 in 20 overs.
