Eviction of trespassers continues in govt quarters at Unit II and adjoining areas
Bhubaneswar: The drive to evict the trespassers from govt quarters at Unit II and adjoining areas continued on Thursday. The joint enforcement squad of the general administration department and the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) sealed 26 more govt quarters.
According to BDA's eviction report, the joint enforcement squad first proceeded to the site in the morning and allowed the trespassers to remove their belongings from the unauthorisedly occupied govt quarters.
"We have made public announcements and given adequate time to the squatters to take their things out from the premises. We then went for the sealing of the quarters. Today, we sealed 26 govt quarters in Unit II," BDA liaison officer Subhranshu Mohanty said.
The general administration department and BDA began the eviction drive on Tuesday after issuing an official letter mentioning the existence of 222 such govt quarters which need to be taken back from the trespassers.
Officials said that there are nearly 100 such govt quarters, out of the listed 222, only in Unit II and its adjoining areas which are unauthorisedly occupied by the trespassers. On Wednesday, authorities sealed 25 govt quarters after evicting the trespassers.

"The ground report suggests that most of the govt quarters are illegally occupied by the trespassers, while some of them are sub-let by the official allottees of the govt quarters, which is also a violation of the norms," a senior general administration department official said.
The govt quarters, which are either occupied by the trespassers or illegally given out on rent, have been converted into commercial units such as hotels, kitchens, warehouses and even venues for different events.
Unit II and its adjoining areas are considered to be the central part of the city, with the railway station on one side and the airport on the other side in very close proximity. It is one of the prime locations of the city, mostly dominated by govt quarters.
