Kota Belud Rice Bowl project a symbol of failure, says Umno Youth Chief

Published on: Saturday, May 17, 2025 Published on: Sat, May 17, 2025 Text Size: Sabah Umno Youth Chief Sufian Abdul Karim has slammed the state government over the failed Kota Belud Rice Bowl Project, calling it a clear symbol of poor planning and weak food security policy. Launched with a RM340 million federal allocation and aimed at boosting Sabah's rice self-sufficiency level (SSL) to 60pc, he said the project has fallen far short, with the state's SSL at just 22.8pc in 2024. Advertisement "Rice output has declined from over 72,000 metric tonnes in 2016 to 67,705 metric tonnes in 2022," he said. Sufian criticised the state for focusing on 'paper projects' rather than real agricultural outcomes, citing unfinished infrastructure, persistent irrigation issues, and shrinking paddy land. 'The government keeps promoting grand slogans, but farmers are still struggling. This is a crisis rooted in mismanagement and lack of political will," he added. He urged the state to take full responsibility for the failure and focus on real action to improve food security, protect farmers, and boost rice production. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Leadership quality, not party origin, drives political transformation, says Sabah Umno Youth chief

KOTA KINABALU: Political transformation doesn't depend on whether a party is local or national, but on the quality and integrity of its leaders, says Sabah Umno Youth chief Sufian Abdul Karim. Calling out what he described as 'recycled leadership', he said Sabahans are being asked to believe in change from individuals who once held power and failed to bring lasting progress, and are now re-emerging under the banner of local parties. 'What is the use of shouting 'local party' when its leaders are just old ministers from the past, jumping to a new platform to stay in power?' he said in a statement on Sunday (May 11). Sufian urged voters not to be swayed by sentiment or slogans, but to assess political parties based on their record of delivering real development. He said Umno and Barisan Nasional have maintained a consistent focus on infrastructure, education, employment, and upholding people's rights, without the need for theatrics or hiding behind a 'local' identity. 'The people of Sabah are not easily misled. They know who truly serves and who merely plays politics,' he said. Sufian urged the public to reject political narratives that benefit only a select few, saying it is time to move beyond emotional rhetoric and focus on results.
