Mayor Wee to step down as S'wak's amateur swimming assoc president after 14 years
Wee says it was time to pass the baton to a younger, capable leader who could take ASAS to greater heights.
KUCHING (April 30): Amateur Swimming Association of Sarawak (ASAS) president Dato Wee Hong Seng has announced that he will not be seeking re-election at the association's upcoming annual general meeting, expected to be held in the coming months.
Wee, who is also the Kuching South Mayor, said it is time to pass the baton to a younger, capable leader who could take ASAS to greater heights.
'In fact, l had wanted to step down last year but since Sukma XXI Sarawak was organised by Sarawak last year, l had to stay on to lead Sarawak swimming and ensure that the swimming competition in Sukma is well organised. That is my responsibility as a president,' he told a press conference at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Building today.
Wee, who has led ASAS since 2010, noted that the association is now in strong financial standing and has consistently delivered results under his leadership.
'I am leaving now as ASAS is in good shape financially and under my leadership we have managed to win at least 10 gold medals in every Sukma,' he said.
He said whoever is going to succeed him must have the ability and capability to represent Sarawak at the federal level, and communicate well with the officials in the national body as well as the affiliates.
'You must be able to show that Sarawak should be respected and stand very firmly for the interest of Sarawak.
'Who will be my successor? That, l cannot decide because the new president must have the full support of the members and ASAS affiliates. If you have all that, why not contest for the top post,' he added.
