Ahead of Navi Mumbai airport's inauguration, key transit hub Targhar railway station gears up for final inspection

With the Navi Mumbai International Airport likely to be operational within two months, the Targhar railway station, which is expected to play a pivotal role in providing seamless connectivity to the airport, is ready for final inspection by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) and Central Railway authorities, officials said. Spread over 2 lakh square feet, the newly built station has been planned as a future-ready transit hub. According to officials, the station will act as a key interchange point between the Harbour Line, the upcoming Coastal Metro, and the proposed airport skytrain, facilitating seamless transfers for air passengers and daily commuters alike. 'The structural work has been completed. All passenger amenities, subways and platform fittings have also been installed. Final inspection by CIDCO and the Central Railway will determine when we can officially open it for commuter use,' said a senior CIDCO official. The station has a concourse space of more than 50,000 sq ft covered with polycarbonate sheet roofing in a parametric shape, which provides it a spacious, contemporary look. Two subways measuring 7.5 metres in width link the platforms to the forecourt and the areas around the station. Its five platforms include three island platforms and two end-platforms that stretch across 270 metres. For commuters' convenience, the station has designated waiting spaces close to the ticket office, complete with eateries. Toilets in the Sulabh Sauchalay model have been established with separate facilities for disabled persons. A huge pay-and-park area is also available with space for 720 four-wheelers. A specific drop-off area for buses, cars, and autorickshaws, with queuing lanes is provided for easy last-mile connectivity. 'Targhar station has been designed not only as a stop on the railway but as a multimodal transport hub. Its location and connection to future transit routes make it significant to the new airport ecosystem,' the official said.
