‘No business with a genocidal govt': Spain halts €287m missile purchase from Israeli firm Rafael

'No business with a genocidal govt': Spain halts €287m missile purchase from Israeli firm Rafael MADRID, June 4 — Spain, which has strongly criticised Israel's offensive in Gaza, has cancelled a contract to buy 168 firing posts and 1,680 anti-tank missiles from Israeli defence company Rafael, Spanish media reported Wednesday. The deal was worth 287.5 million euros (US$327 million), according to top-selling daily Spanish newspaper El País, which cited unnamed government sources. The equipment was to be manufactured in Spain under licence from Rafael. Spanish defence ministry sources told AFP that the government 'has begun a process to revoke licences of Israeli origin' and was working to redirect its procurement programmes 'with the goal of achieving greater technological independence and autonomy'. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's criticisms of the offensive in Gaza infuriated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government last year by recognising a Palestinian state. In late April, Spain cancelled a contract to buy bullets from another Israeli company, IMI Systems, following pressure from the Socialist-led government's far-left coalition partner Sumar – a move swiftly condemned by Israel. Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz, the founder of Sumar, said at the time that Spain could not engage in 'business with a genocidal government... that is massacring the Palestinian people'. Sanchez's government said it halted weapons transactions with Israel after the start of the war following Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. But according to Centre Delas, a Barcelona-based think tank specialising in security and defence, the government has granted 46 contracts worth more than 1 billion euros to Israeli companies based on data published on a public tenders platform. — AFP

Spain : A Sumar draft bill to break agreements with Morocco and Israel

The Sumar group in the Spanish Parliament has introduced a draft law aimed at prohibiting all forms of agreements and cooperation between Spanish administrations and countries occupying territories illegally. The focus is particularly on Morocco—referred to as the «occupier of Western Sahara»—and Israel in relation to the occupied Palestinian territories, according to Spanish media sources. The proposal calls for banning Spanish companies from engaging in commercial, financial, or investment activities that directly or indirectly support illegal settlements in these territories. It describes such activities as a form of «plunder» against the Sahrawi and Palestinian peoples. The initiative also seeks to sever all forms of cooperation—economic, military, cultural, and more—with these countries. It requires Spanish public entities to annul any existing agreements and prohibits the establishment of diplomatic representation or the signing of international treaties related to the occupied territories. Techi Sidi, a parliamentarian of Sahrawi descent and a member of the leftist party, explained that the draft law is grounded in United Nations resolutions and rulings by the European Court of Justice, particularly on the Western Sahara issue. The proposal also addresses the Palestinian cause, urging the Spanish Socialist Party to support the measure as a means of applying economic pressure on both Morocco and Israel.

Spain Takes Bold Stand: Parliament Votes to Consider Israeli Arms Trade Ban

Spain's parliament on Tuesday passed a non-binding motion calling on the government to impose an arms embargo on Israel in response to its military operations in Gaza. The motion, introduced by the leftist Sumar alliance, part of the ruling coalition, along with opposition parties Podemos and the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC), was approved by a vote of 176-171, El Pais reported. Spain's parliament passed a non-binding resolution on Tuesday calling for a full arms embargo on Israel, citing its actions in Gaza as genocide. Lawmakers in favor applauded the motion, which urges the Spanish government to ban the exports of any material that could strengthen the Israeli military, including helmets, vests, and fuel with potential military use. The motion also recommends reforming Spain's foreign trade legislation to prohibit military agreements with any state accused of committing genocide or crimes against humanity, specifically citing Israel's offensive on Gaza. Sumar spokesperson Veronica Martinez said Spain 'cannot cooperate with a state that commits genocide or war crimes,' adding that Israel's arms industry 'must not be supported under the current circumstances in Gaza.' Podemos leader Ione Belarra called on the Spanish Cabinet to convene an emergency session this week to issue a formal decree banning arms sales to Israel. 'Palestinians cannot wait any longer. Netanyahu is killing, bombing, starving, and depriving them of medical care. What is happening is the biggest ethnic cleansing of the 21st century,' she said, describing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as 'the Hitler of our time.' Defense Minister Margarita Robles, attending an EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, reiterated that Spain has not engaged in arms trade with Israel since the onset of the Gaza war on Oct. 7, 2023. 'We are not buying weapons from Israel, and this must be clearly stated. Since October 7, not a single weapon has been purchased from 'Israel'. Only protective gear like helmets and vests for Spanish security forces has been procured,' Robles said. However, civil society groups demonstrating outside parliament claimed that Spain still maintains nine active contracts with Israeli arms companies and continues to pay millions of euros under those agreements.
