Starbucks brings back popular menu items after major cuts
Summer is only a few weeks away, and it seems like no one is more excited than fast-food chains, since they have already begun dropping their summer menus. Seasonal menus are a popular tradition in the restaurant sector because businesses can test new products and experiment with seasonal ingredients. These menus let chain restaurants keep up with trends without investing too heavily in something that might not work in the long run. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Starbucks has been suffering some of the most troublesome quarters in its history, with continuous sales declines and a slowdown in traffic that have affected its finances. Related: Starbucks makes major change in rewards program loyal fans will hate To put the business back on track, CEO Brian Niccol emphasized the need to return the company to its roots by focusing on its core products, personalizing the coffee shop experience, and keeping prices from increasing. This led him to formulate a multi-year turnaround plan that has changed the company from the inside out in all aspects, especially its menu. Image source:One of the main short-term issues Starbucks (SBUX) needed to address was its menu. It had become too complex, was damaging efficiency, did not prioritize coffee quality, and elevated prices due to the large number of available customizations. To quickly resolve this problem, Starbucks began simplifying its menu, reducing customization options, and eliminating extra charges for milk alternatives. Related: Starbucks faces huge new rival However, this meant that some customers would unfortunately no longer be able to order their favorite menu items, at least for now. In February, many customers' nightmares came true: Starbucks discontinued nine beloved Frappuccinos from both the coffee-based and crème categories, nearly halving the available options. Although many might have thought the shrinking of its menu meant no more seasonal menu launches, they were wrong, because Starbucks released the first part of its summer menu on May 20. The menu included the Summer-Berry Refreshers, which can be ordered with water, coconut milk, or lemonade. It also introduced the new Iced Horchata and the Strawberries & Cream Cake Pop. However, Starbucks was far from done with its seasonal releases, as its late summer menu for 2025 was leaked by @markie_devo on Instagram this week. In celebration of the 4th of July, Starbucks is releasing a new Firework Frappuccino. It has a Summer-Berry Refresher base blended with ice and coconut milk and featuring raspberry pearls, strawberry puree, and a topping of vanilla sweet cream cold foam. This item is speculated to become available at all locations nationwide starting July 1 to 7. These consist of a coffee or crème Frappuccino base topped with flavored cream cold foam. The Strato Frappuccinos, which are expected to drop on July 8, will feature three flavors: Salted Caramel Mocha, Strawberry Matcha, and Brown Sugar. During its menu cuts, Starbucks discontinued the Double Chocolate Brownie at the beginning of May. However, that didn't last long because, due to popular demand, Starbucks is reintroducing it, likely on June 23. Starbucks summer drinks come out Tuesday despite menu cuts
Starbucks launches its summer menu with new and returning limited-time drinks Tuesday despite the coffee giant's plans to keep trimming the menu. Why it matters: The Seattle-based company is promoting a "back to Starbucks" campaign to return to its roots to try to reverse a decline in foot traffic and sales. Starbucks' comparable sales declined 1% in the quarter, the company said April 29, its fifth consecutive quarterly decline. Seasonal menu launches have helped drive sales and traffic in the past. Catch up quick: Under Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol — who joined from Chipotle in September — the company has been making a series of changes to reestablishing its cafes as community coffeehouses. Starbucks introduced a new code of conduct, free refills and brought back condiment bars in late January after ditching the nondairy milk fee in November. In early March, the company removed 13 longtime drinks to simplify its menu as part of the strategy to cut the menu by roughly 30% by September. Last week, Starbucks' new dress code went into effect for baristas, which prompted hundreds of workers from unionized locations to strike in protest. When does the Starbucks summer menu come out? The big picture: May 20 is the first day of the seasonal menu. Last year, the summer menu launched on May 7. Summer-Berry Starbucks Refreshers return Zoom in: Summer-Berry Refreshers return Tuesday for a limited time and Starbucks says the line of drinks quickly became a "customer-favorite" when they were introduced to the 2024 summer menu. The drinks feature "a sweet and summery blend of raspberry, blueberry and blackberry flavors shaken with ice and water, poured over raspberry flavored pearls." The drinks can be ordered with lemonade as the Summer-Berry Lemonade Refresher or with coconut milk in the Summer Skies Drink. Starbucks' Iced Horchata Oatmilk Shaken Espresso The intrigue: Starbucks said its new Iced Horchata Oatmilk Shaken Espresso is inspired by the Mexican-style horchata, a popular beverage throughout Latin America. It includes blonde espresso, oatmilk and horchata flavored syrup and described as "a fusion of warm cinnamon, sweet vanilla and subtle nutty notes reminiscent of the rice milk that makes up a traditional horchata." Horchata recipes vary from region, Starbucks said, noting the drink is often made with non-dairy milk. Another addition to the summer menu is the new Strawberries & Cream Cake Pop. Follow the money: Starbucks said the Iced Shaken Espresso has been the fastest drink to reach $1 billion in sales in company history. It launched in 2021. Starbucks menu changes 2025: More items to be cut What's next: Additional beverages and food items are expected to leave the menu "throughout the coming months," with the roughly 30% menu reduction happening by September 2025, Starbucks has said.
