Summers County LEPC making changes to emergency plans

HINTON, WV (WVNS) — Workers with Summers County Office of Emergency Management attended a quarterly Local Emergency Planning Committee meeting last week. Several changes to emergency plans were discussed. Construction still on going at Batteau Beach A county's Local Emergency Planning Committee is a public organization that discusses the emergency plans for the county. The recent meeting which the Summers County LEPC attended played host to talks about planning for chemical incidents within the county. Loyd Lowry, Summers County Office of Emergency Management Director, said they discussed a variety of plans based on the various facilities in the county which hold different hazardous materials. 'Well, you know, primarily we have a couple facilities that store large amounts of chlorine. We also have facilities that store a large amount of flammable materials. We have to look at those and make sure that we have planning set up for those responses. We also have a transportation network that involves roads and railroads. We also look at those for possible issues with hazardous materials. Whether it would be spillage, explosions, stuff like that, dangerous breathing conditions for residents,' said Lowry. Lowry said the changes being made to the plans are in regard to the specific responses for each type of facility. The plans will go more in depth as to the appropriate response to each different chemical in the county. He said his office will work with the federal government, local emergency response agencies, and the National Weather Service to ensure the safety of Summers County residents. He encourages citizens to play an active role in knowing what the emergency plans for their county are. 'The LEPC is a transparent organization. If anybody has questions as to exactly what facilities are in this county, what their locations are, what chemicals they may have on hand, they can reach out to the LEPC committee. We do, once a year, publicly display this information, usually at Railroad Days or another festival where it's easily accessible,' said Lowry. Planned bridge repairs to cause traffic delays on Duncan Branch Road Lowry said the regular meetings are open to the public and information on them may be found at the Summers County Courthouse, the Memorial Building, and several other locations in town. Summers County Sheriff's Department hosts donation drive for McDowell County

HINTON, WV (WVNS) — In an effort to help out their fellow West Virginians, the Summers County Sheriff's Department is organizing a donation drive for the people of McDowell County. Welch community begins first steps back to normalcy after devastating floods Earlier this week, McDowell County was devastated by severe flooding. Businesses, homes, and lives were lost throughout the county. The Summers County Sheriff's Department has partnered with three other county organizations to do what they can to alleviate some of McDowell County's pain. Summers County Office of Emergency Management, Summers County Commission, and Ultimate Experience Outdoors have all come together to organize this drive with the Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Justin Faris said he started the drive because he has good memories in McDowell County. 'I used to work some in McDowell County and I've been in McDowell County a lot for ATVs and stuff like that. The people down there are just such good people. They don't have a lot down there, but, man, they just got a heart of gold. They're always so nice and so polite whenever I'm down there and I've always had good interactions down there,' said Sheriff Faris. Sheriff Faris said he can't imagine what the McDowell County Sheriff and the citizens of the county are going through. However, he said that West Virginians help each other in times like these, so that's what Summers County will do. Sheriff Faris said in addition to bottled water and nonperishable food items, there are several other things he'd like to see donated for McDowell County. 'Toothpaste, toothbrushes, baby food, diapers, wipes, feminine products, sanitation products, bleach is probably another thing that someone can bring. Any cleaning supplies, stuff like that. Probably nothing on clothes right now, just because it's so hard to manage the clothes aspect of it and I do know that they are getting some clothes and stuff down there already,' said Sheriff Faris. Local fire department in McDowell County helps distribute supplies to locals Sheriff Faris said the biggest drop off days for the drive will be February 24, 25, and 27 from 6 to 8:30 in the evening at the Summers County 911 Center. He also said if you see a deputy out and about, flag them down if you have things to donate. They will be happy to take them. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
