Summers County Sheriff's Department hosts donation drive for McDowell County
HINTON, WV (WVNS) — In an effort to help out their fellow West Virginians, the Summers County Sheriff's Department is organizing a donation drive for the people of McDowell County. Welch community begins first steps back to normalcy after devastating floods Earlier this week, McDowell County was devastated by severe flooding. Businesses, homes, and lives were lost throughout the county. The Summers County Sheriff's Department has partnered with three other county organizations to do what they can to alleviate some of McDowell County's pain. Summers County Office of Emergency Management, Summers County Commission, and Ultimate Experience Outdoors have all come together to organize this drive with the Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Justin Faris said he started the drive because he has good memories in McDowell County. 'I used to work some in McDowell County and I've been in McDowell County a lot for ATVs and stuff like that. The people down there are just such good people. They don't have a lot down there, but, man, they just got a heart of gold. They're always so nice and so polite whenever I'm down there and I've always had good interactions down there,' said Sheriff Faris. Sheriff Faris said he can't imagine what the McDowell County Sheriff and the citizens of the county are going through. However, he said that West Virginians help each other in times like these, so that's what Summers County will do. Sheriff Faris said in addition to bottled water and nonperishable food items, there are several other things he'd like to see donated for McDowell County. 'Toothpaste, toothbrushes, baby food, diapers, wipes, feminine products, sanitation products, bleach is probably another thing that someone can bring. Any cleaning supplies, stuff like that. Probably nothing on clothes right now, just because it's so hard to manage the clothes aspect of it and I do know that they are getting some clothes and stuff down there already,' said Sheriff Faris. Local fire department in McDowell County helps distribute supplies to locals Sheriff Faris said the biggest drop off days for the drive will be February 24, 25, and 27 from 6 to 8:30 in the evening at the Summers County 911 Center. Summers County Sheriff's Department holds water drive to assist McDowell County residents
HINTON, WV (WVNS) – Some relief will soon be on its way to hard-hit McDowell County. The Summers County Sheriff's Department is collecting donations of bottled water to take to McDowell County residents. People can drop off any kind of clean, drinkable bottled water, like 40-packs, a gallon of water, or even 5 gallons. Chief Deputy Tim Adkins said they will be making this delivery of water early Friday morning. If you wish to donate bottled water, please make sure to do so by Thursday, February 20, 2025. Warming centers, supply distribution open up across southern West Virginia '[Our] thoughts and prayers go out to the families. Normally, Facebook can be a bad place. You see a lot of negativity on Facebook, but in times like this, you see what people need and it has helped us to figure out exactly what to get them,' said Chief Deputy Adkins. The sheriff's office in the Summers County Judicial Annex is the location where these donations should be dropped off. The office is open during the week from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. This donation is especially important for places in McDowell County that must rely primarily on bottled water.
