Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony allows those in Summers County a chance to reflect on the cost of freedom

HINTON, WV (WVNS) – The local community and veterans gathered at the Summers County Memorial Building to pay their respects to deceased service men and women. After years of collaboration, Summers County close to completing first dog kennel This Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony featured speakers like West Virginia District 10 State Senator Jack Woodrum and West Virginia District 040 Delegate Roy Cooper, who is also a veteran. Senator Woodrum said he is fortunate enough to have known very involved veterans that are now passed like World War I veterans and Curt Messer, who used to speak at Memorial Day and Veteran's Day ceremonies in Summers County. 'Summers County and West Virginia has a very high rate of military enlistment. Most of the conflicts that our country has been engaged in, people in West Virginia have been very involved in those conflicts. So, being able to recognize that, to teach the younger generations about service, about what it means to be an American – those are very important things to me and to the people that show up for this event. Almost everybody here has lost family members or friends in combat. It is important for us to be able to come out and remember them and think about them,' said Senator Woodrum. One theme each speaker kept coming back to was the fact that Memorial Day is not necessarily a celebration. It is a time to reflect on the sacrifices that were made to keep the United States of America a free country. Veterans who are still living were also honored at this event for their service. 'The country cannot forget those who allowed the country to be free and safe for them. So any time that anybody in any community is able to come around and show their gratitude, it means a lot to the veterans. I think it means a lot to the country, too, that they come to realize and pass on to [the next] generations just exactly what it took to make us free and stable in a pretty contentious world,' said Robert Bennett, a veteran who served in the U.S. Navy. Summit Christian Academy joins the WVSSAC Bennett is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4500. He said if others would like to join on learn more information, they can show up to the Veteran's Memorial Museum of Southern West Virginia in Hinton. Bennett explained that folks should speak with Tim Wheeler there for more information. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Ground broken for Christian school's new elementary facility

princeton — Students eagerly accepted shovels and broke ground Wednesday on a new elementary school which will stand next door to a Christian middle school and high school that opened its doors last year. In the fall of 2024, Johnson Chapel Baptist Church started the Summit Christian Academy, a new middle school and high school along Halls Ridge Road which replaced the former Mercer Christian Academy. A crowd gathered Wednesday morning for the groundbreaking ceremony marking the start of the academy's new elementary school. Kathy Hawks, the academy's administrator and principal, welcomed guests to Summit Elementary School's groundbreaking. Future students joined the Mercer County Commission and other dignitaries in breaking ground for their future classrooms. 'We are so grateful for your presence and support,' Hawks said. 'This project is an investment in our community, and we believe it will bring numerous benefits to the families of southern West Virginia. This building represents more than breaks and mortar. It signifies the opportunity to educate children in a Christ-honoring environment where academic excellence is paramount. It denotes a choice; a choice parents have as they consider educational opportunities for their children. It symbolizes hope, hope for future generations of students.' Summit Christian Academy enrollment numbers have been increasing, Hawks said. 'At the end of Aprll, at open house we had 79 students enrolled for this current year,' she said. 'However, by the time school started in August 2024, we had 119. The numbers continued to increase to our present 142 students with 94 additional students who have submitted applications to start Summit fall 2025. With enrollment still open, it is expected that applications will continue to be accepted, putting projected admission well above 200.' Hawks said the elementary school project became a reality with help from the Hope Scholarship and the efforts of Johnston Chapel Baptist Church's members and leadership, its board of directors, area businesses and individuals in the community. 'It is a testament to the power of prayer, hard work and a dedicated team,' Hawks said. 'But mostly, it is witness to a loving God who can do exceedingly, abundantly, above all we ask and think. And it is to Him we dedicate this school.' Creating the new elementary school has been a challenge, but now the plan is coming to fruition, said Bill W. Harvey, chairman of the academy's board of directors. 'We're just humbled and overwhelmed to have the Lord bless this,' Harvey said. 'It has been stressful, short timeline to get it done but we think we have seen literally miracles to affirm what we're doing here to create an institution to impart knowledge to young minds. And I can assure you that is through an unwavering commitment to education excellence in all subjects – math, language, the arts, world history, American history, civics.' State Treasurer Larry Pack said he was serving in the Legislature when the Hope Scholarship was created in 2021, adding that he was glad to see the school and church's commitment to investing in the future of children. 'The tuition of the Hope Scholarship, it really helps a lot. It helps pays the operating expenses, but it doesn't help pay for the building, so thank you so much to everybody at the church and the school that's allowed that and has been able to do that,' Pack said. The fact West Virginia has the Hope Scholarship gives the state's parents more options for their children, he said. 'So many people in West Virginia do not have the financial resources to even consider an option for some other different path, an educational path, for their children and this is what it's all about,' Pack said. 'So now we're able to return some of your money back to you and you're able to make the decision that you think is best for your children.' Contact Greg Jordan at gjordan@

Summit Christian Academy breaks ground for new elementary school addition

PRINCETON, WV (WVNS) – The leadership team at Summit Christian Academy broke ground for their new elementary school set to open this fall. This decision to open for the 2025-26 school year was made after the school opened enrollment for this elementary addition, which already exceeded their goal of getting 90 or more students before August 1. West Virginia State Treasurer Larry Pack was in attendance for this ceremony. He spoke about the Hope Scholarship, for which he helped advocate. Pack said the Hope Scholarship money is a valuable resource for parents with kids at Summit. Nathan Tanner named the next head football coach at Princeton Senior High School 'Parents are able to use that money to be able to choose the educational path that they want for their children. So they can use it for home schooling, micro schools, private schools. They can also, of course, stay in public schools. One size does not fit all. So [it is] just basically giving parents a choice,' said Pack. Dr. Kathy Hawks is an administrator at Summit. She told 59News about their progress on the new addition. 'We have already purchased modular structures and they will be here hopefully within the next month or 5 to 6 weeks. We're going to start the site work immediately,' said Dr. Hawks. Dr. Hawks told 59News she is excited for her school to accommodate students of all school ages. Some Summit students even got the privilege of being part of the first people to break ground on this new addition.
