Sun Country will continue CVRA flights in 2026
EAU CLAIRE — Sun Country will continue to operate out of Chippewa Valley Regional Airport with flights to Fort Myers, Fla. Sun Country previously supplied the primary passenger service from the airport under the Essential Air Service program. When the company's contract ended, the airport and the federal government shifted to SkyWest, which has daily flights to Chicago. A key part of Sun Country's operations was the offering of seasonal flights directly to warm-weather destinations. When it lost the bid to continue as the primary carrier in the Chippewa Valley, Sun Country announced it would continue flights to Fort Myers this spring as a test to see whether the route would be profitable without the federal subsidy. Apparently it was. 'We're thrilled Sun Country will continue offering this valuable nonstop service to Fort Myers,' said Airport Director Charity Zich in a release announcing the continuation. 'This is truly a community success story — made possible by the ongoing support of our passengers, local businesses, and regional partners who recognize the importance of maintaining and growing air service options in our region.' The flights will continue to be seasonal, taking place between Jan. 30 and April 6, 2026. Tickets are on sale and reservations can be made through Sun Country.

Sun Country faces slight delays integrating additional Amazon cargo jets
Sun Country Airlines in the first quarter took possession of three Amazon cargo jets, but only one is in service so far for the retail and logistics giant because integrating them into the existing fleet requires additional work, the company said Friday. Amazon is transferring eight leased Boeing 737-800 converted freighters to Sun Country (NASDAQ: SCNY) from previous contractor Atlas Air. Sun Country plans to have all the narrowbody freighters in service by the end of summer, bringing the dedicated Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) fleet to 20 aircraft and doubling the airline's cargo revenue. The initial Amazon-supplied aircraft began flying packages in late March. The other two cargo jets will be inducted into the fleet this quarter, the Minneapolis-based carrier said in its latest financial results. Sun Country CEO Jude Bricker told analysts on the quarterly earnings call that the amount of preparation necessary to absorb each used 737-800 freighter into the fleet varies because they may need parts to be replaced or inconsistent maintenance records to be resolved during the transition from the prior operator. The integration delays increase costs because Sun Country has staffed up on pilots to operate the aircraft and can't temporarily switch them to passenger operations because scheduled flights are planned months in advance and demand for ad hoc charters is difficult to project, he explained. It should be noted that delays so far are minor, and the entry-into-service timeline for all eight freighters is unchanged. Sun Country has a unique hybrid business model based on seasonal scheduled passenger service to sun-and-fun travel destinations, a charter business for sports teams and other groups – which uses the same aircraft – and cargo flying. Bringing an aircraft into a certificated airline's fleet involves many steps to meet safety, regulatory and operational requirements, as well as company standards. The process includes reviewing the maintenance history; conducting thorough inspections of the engines, systems and airframe; updating operational manuals; training pilots, technicians and ground personnel; customization; and obtaining approval from civil aviation authorities. 'Those airplanes are coming just as rapidly as we can put them in there, but there's a process of putting it on the certificate, getting the transition mods completed and then getting them scheduled. And we're running behind for reasons beyond our control,' Bricker said. 'So it's going to be a little lumpy as we move through the transition, but I expect in September to be operating 20 airplanes.' During the first quarter, Sun Country's cargo revenue increased 17.6% year over year to $28.2 million, despite a 1% decline in cargo block hours due to normalization of flight schedules and some weather events. The improvement was primarily due to an annual rate escalation in the Amazon contract that went into effect in December and the new contract for the extra freighters. Cargo revenue per block hour, a measure of productivity, increased 18.9% The cargo division's operating income was $1.5 million versus a $1.3 million loss in the prior year. Bricker reiterated that Sun Country will begin to double its cargo revenue in the fourth quarter, when the full fleet is in service. In 2024, the company achieved record cargo revenue of $107 million. The airline is drawing down some of its scheduled passenger service over the next year to ensure it has a sufficient number of pilots to reliably manage the Amazon growth. Overall revenue across Sun Country increased by $15 million to $326.6 million, and net income inched up to $36.5 million. Sun Country began supporting Amazon's air network in 2020. Spirit Airlines just made another big change as it starts a new chapter
Spirit Airlines has a new leader. The Broward-based carrier has turned to an aviation industry insider as it attempts to forge a new chapter after enduring bankruptcy woes and years of merger failures.. Spirit's board of directors appointed Dave Davis as president and chief executive officer, the airline's parent company said on Thursday. He will start that role and join the board of directors on April 21. Davis replaces longtime President and CEO Ted Christie, who resigned April 7 after successfully leading the company through restructuring. Davis comes from Sun Country Airlines, where he was president and chief financial officer and a member of its board of directors since December 2019. Before that, he was the executive vice president and chief financial officer of Northwest Airlines, the world's fourth largest airline before its sale to Delta in 2008. Minneapolis-based Sun Country Airlines said in a regulatory filing on April 17 with the Securities and Exchange Committee that on April 16, Davis 'informed the Board that he would be stepping down from his position.' Sun Country noted that 'Mr. Davis' resignation was not a result of any disagreement with the Company or the Board.' His success at Sun Country was a selling point to Broward-based Spirit. 'As ultra-low-cost carriers like Spirit and Frontier falter, Sun Country has been able to routinely stand out as one of the most profitable airlines in the U.S.' travel media Skift wrote in a report in August. It noted that Sun Country's operating margin of 13% was the highest among American airline companies. Operating margin is a measure of a company's profit after taking into account most expenses except interest and taxes. 'The Minneapolis-based carrier has developed a niche market in Minnesota, along with a cargo and charter business that have boosted its bottom line,' Skift wrote in another report on April 17. There's hope then that Davis, 58 and with an MBA and an aerospace engineering and mechanics degree, has what it takes to make Spirit a successful business. Will Spirit now seek another airline merger? Davis' experience with Northwest Airlines before its deal with Delta offers another tantalizing possibility — that he'll be skillful in leading a merger with another airline. That would serve as a stark contrast to the multiple failed mergers Spirit attempted. 'He brings with him a wealth of experience and a solid track record of accomplishments from his many years in the airline industry,' said Robert Milton, chairman of Spirit Airlines. That 'positions him well to lead Spirit's continued transformation.' The new chief will receive a three-year employment package with a $950,000 annual base salary and a $4 million signing bonus to be paid in two installments, according to April 17 regulatory filings by Spirit with the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission. How Spirit Airlines survived bankruptcy In November 2024, Spirit filed for bankruptcy protection. On Feb. 20, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York approved the carrier's plan to continue operating as a business, and cleared bankruptcy shortly thereafter. Then-CEO Ted Christie called the court's approval 'a major milestone.' 'We will emerge as a stronger airline with the financial flexibility to continue providing guests with enhanced travel experiences and greater value,' he said. By the second week of April, he was gone.

FBI: Hoax by two young children responsible for diverted Sun Country flight to Mexico
After a Mexico-bound Sun Country flight from the Twin Cities diverted to El Paso earlier this week, FBI officials said that the security concern that caused the plane to land in Texas stemmed from a hoax by two young children on the flight. The online statement said that after a threatening handwritten note was found on the plane Wednesday saying 'You Are All Going to Die, Help Me,' it was reported to Sun Country personnel on the airliner and resulted in the unscheduled landing. The U.S. Attorney's Office of the Western District of Texas will not press charges against the children, said the statement by FBI Special Agent in Charge John Morales. The FBI thanked the 156 passengers on board Flight 593 to Mazatlán for their patience as they investigated the 'circumstances behind the reported safety concern.' The Sun Country passengers departed El Paso for Mazatlán on Thursday, the airline said.
