The sixth instalment of The Karate Kid franchise takes the legacy of Mr Han to a new generation of kung fu fighters. In Karate Kid: Legends, Li Fong, a young kung fu prodigy struggles to let go of the past as he tries to fit in and navigate his new home, New York City. With the help from legendary karate masters, he soon learns to merge two styles into one for the ultimate martial arts breakdown. A family man's moonlighting job as a henchman goes horribly wrong in Guns Up as he finds himself facing deadly consequences while exposing a dark secret and revealing more than he intended. Now he has one night to get his family out of the city and out of harm's way. This action comedy stars Kevin James, Christina Ricci and Solomon Hughes, now at cinemas. New cinema treat The Phoenician Scheme, from acclaimed director Wes Anderson, delivers another distinctive visual extravagance. The quirky comedy tells the story — conceived with Roman Coppola — of a wealthy businessman appointing his only daughter, a nun, as the sole heir to his estate. As he embarks on a new enterprise, they soon become the target of scheming tycoons, terrorists and assassins. Tom Cruise tackles his final Mission, Lilo and Stitch are back, Cannes celebrates great movies and stars

Spotlight this week features some of Hollywood's biggest blockbuster releases and a closer look at Johannesburg's latest VIP luxury cinema destination. Lilo & Stitch is Walt Disney Studios live-action remake of the popular original animation S titch! The Movie about an extraterrestrial entity who finds his way to Earth, with hilarious and chaotic consequences. Crossing paths with Lilo, they navigate the world together as best friends. Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On) and starring Maia Kealoha, Sydney Agudong and Chris Sanders, it is on at cinemas and 3D. With the central theme of ohana, meaning family, the release is a stellar outing for the whole family. The mission impossible forges ahead one last time in the eighth and final chapter. Shot in the UK, SA and the Arctic, Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning picks up where Dead Reckoning left off, with Tom Cruise again as death-defying Ethan Hunt pursuing the destruction of the Entity. It is directed again by franchise veteran Christopher McQuarrie and with returning cast Esai Morales, Hayley Atwell and Angela Bassett. On at cinemas, IMAX, 4DX and D-BOX, the film is an action-packed marvel delivering the best escapism. The 78th Cannes Film Festival laid down the red carpet last week with some of Hollywood's finest stepping out to announce and promote new cinema releases. Highlights of the festival included the French comedy Leave One Day by Amélie Bonnin as the opening film, and the Honorary Palme d'Or awarded to two Hollywood giants Robert De Niro and Denzel Washington. It also included the world premiere for Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, with those attending applauding the cast and talent of the film with a five-minute standing ovation. Local movie lovers celebrated the luxurious joy of cinema with the opening of Johannesburg's newest VIP cinema destination at Nu Metro's deluxe new cinema at Bedford Centre. Shakespeare's love tragedy reborn as a pop musical

This week's Spotlight entertainment offering features a modern retelling of star-crossed lovers Juliet and Romeo, a local drama garnering attention, a streaming delight for Star Wars fans and highlights from last week's Laugh Africa Comedy Festival. A reimagining of Shakespeare's most famous tragic love story, Juliet & Romeo is reborn as a pop musical for a new generation. Directed by Timothy Scott Bogart (Spinning Gold, The Jungle Book: Search for the Lost Treasure) and with Clara Rugaard and Jamie Ward in the title roles, you can expect forbidden love, political intrigue and the power of music to collide. The film co-stars Rebel Wilson, Rupert Everett and Jason Isaacs and promises to be a fantastic cinema outing. Seasoned local director Karabo Lediga (Queen Sono, Emoyeni) brings the story of high-flying banker Lesego returning unannounced to her childhood home on an apparent sabbatical from life. A powerful family secret threatens to upend the relationship between doting, but overbearing mother Doris and Lesego. Spotlight's episode this week features a new comedy thriller and Marvel Universe release at cinemas, and what promises to be the biggest African comedy festival in 2025. When crime runs in the family and the cast includes Jennifer Coolidge and Bill Murray, you know it will also involve comedy. In Riff Raff, a former criminal is enjoying a normal life with his wife and son when his past catches up with him. He learns notorious gangsters are coming to get him. Satirical and absurd at times, Riff Raff co-stars Gabrielle Union, Ed Harris and Dustin Hoffman, and is on at cinemas. Critics are hailing Thunderbolts as the best Marvel Cinematic Universe film in years. It is receiving praise for not shying away from themes of loneliness and depression. The movie — on at cinemas, IMAX and 3D — has a ragtag team of anti-heroes and is packed with loads of action, and centres on a group of reformed supervillains ensnared in a deadly mission forcing them to confront their dark past.
