2 children among 3 dead after6 houses collapse in Mathura

1 2 3 Agra: Three people, including two girls aged 3 and 5 years, were killed and a few others were feared trapped under the debris after six small residential units -- one of them a two-storey house -- collapsed in a congested part of Mathura around 11.30am on Sunday. Police said the incident took place due to excavation activity for a parking lot, and "the digging work had weakened the foundation of nearby houses". Mathura SSP Shlok Kumar said, "As many as six houses -- built on private plots on a mound -- in a densely populated residential area -- collapsed in Masani neighbourhood under Govind Nagar police station. A search and rescue operation was initiated. We are in the process of filing an FIR against one Sunil Chen, responsible for carrying out the excavation work." Those dead were Totaram, 35; and sisters Kajal, 3; and Yashoda 5. The two children had arrived at their grandparents' place from Vrindavan on Saturday evening and were asleep when the incident happened. Teams from NDRF, SDRF, fire department personnel and civil defence volunteers were pressed into action for rescue operation. Six bulldozers along with heavy machinery were also used to clear the concrete. Residents of the area said the houses -- nearly a decade old -- came down "within minutes", leading to panic and chaos in the locality, situated on the way to Siddh Baba temple. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Those affected were mainly involved in work related to confectionery and silver casting units. Neeraj Sharma, a resident, said no prior notice was given to them regarding the digging work, "which started on Saturday night". Mathura-Vrindavan MLA Shrikant Sharma said, "We'll write to the chief minister and request a probe into the incident. Locals claim the involvement of a land mafia, and action should be taken against him." Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
