14 cobra hatchlings released into wild in Ganjam
Berhampur: Forest officials and snake rescuers were delighted after 14 out of 17 Indian spectacled cobra eggs rescued from Samalei near Ganjam's Hinjili successfully hatched on Monday.
The eggs recovered about a week ago.
"All 14 hatchlings were safely released into their natural habitat after their condition was inspected," said Berhampur divisional forest officer (DFO) Sunny Khokhar. He confirmed that the eggs were kept under constant observation.
Snake rescuer Swadhin Kumar Sahu, who monitored the eggs, said they were expecting hatching after ten days but were surprised when hatchlings emerged naturally on Monday morning. Another rescuer, Sandeep Kumar Sethi, said it took over half an hour to safely retrieve the eggs along with a five-foot-long adult cobra, which was also released back into the wild. "We're grateful to the forest officials for preserving the eggs so well, leading to a successful hatching," Sethi added.
