Scania to soon start electric bus deliveries to northern Sweden
Scania is set to enhance Sweden's public transportation system with the delivery of new electric buses starting this summer. The initial batch will include the two-axle low-entry Scania Fencer f1 model, equipped with four battery packs. Following this, the three-axle low-entry Scania Irizar i3 buses with five battery packs are scheduled for delivery at the turn of the year. The company said these buses represent a significant step towards a more sustainable and safer local transport system. The electric buses, charged using local and sustainable hydro power, will be delivered through a partnership with local Scania dealer Berners and operator Connect Bus. They will serve both city and suburban routes in and around Åre, a region known for its wide temperature range, which can vary by as much as 60°C throughout the year. The order for these electric buses was placed in 2024. The 14 buses are built on Scania's battery electric platform, launched in October 2023 and recently expanded to include a three-axle variant. Scania Urban Solutions head Anna Ställberg said: 'We listened to the market and developed an electric bus platform that meets today's transport needs. This order demonstrates that customers and authorities appreciate its benefits. In addition to having zero tailpipe emissions, the buses are also equipped with the latest road safety technology, including new advanced driver assistance system functionalities.' The region has already seen Scania electric buses in operation, which have successfully navigated the extreme temperature variations, from +30°C in summer to -30°C in winter. Connect Bus CEO Jonas Kempe added: 'Connect Bus is looking forward to receiving the first batch of electric two- and three-axle buses from Scania. With this order, we are investing in a healthier living environment and taking the next step to making zero emissions the new standard.' Engineered with fuel economy and durability in focus Available in three performance steps – 350 hp (1,800 Nm), 390 hp (2,000 Nm) and 430 hp (2,200 Nm) – the Super 11 complies with Euro 4, 5 and 6 emission standards. It delivers performance across a wide range of transport applications, from urban logistics to regional haulage. The Super 11 also benefits from sharing 85 percent of its components with the tried and tested Super 13 engine, maintaining Scania's engineering DNA while being tailored to a different operational fit. Maintenance intervals are up to 30 percent longer than Scania's 9-litre engines when using LDF-5 engine oil, which helps operators increase uptime and reduce overall service costs. Innovative technology beneath the surface The Super 11 features various key improvements that are the result of years of testing of technical innovations. The new engine is equipped with Scania's own cam phaser technology for variable valve timing, enabling real-time engine thermal management and improved combustion performance. This is combined with new engine software and balance shafts for reduced vibration and a robust engine brake, which offers up to 344 kW through Scania's Variable Valve Brake (VVB) system. It all adds up to an engine that delivers a smoother, more comfortable driving experience. Scania's patented turbo dosing system also improves AdBlue usage and further enhances engine efficiency. Cleaner operation from day one The impressive fuel efficiency savings and lighter weight are already compelling arguments for the new engine's sustainability credentials, but a further element is that the Super 11 is compatible with both HVO and FAME.
