Terry Bradshaw calls Steelers' Aaron Rodgers pursuit 'a joke'
"I liked Kenny Pickett," Bradshaw said of the Steelers' 2022 first-round pick, whom the team traded after two seasons. "When they got him to Pittsburgh, they didn't protect him, they didn't get him an offensive line. They wanted to run the football, but they didn't have an offensive line that could protect and they didn't have weapons. He had no wide receivers to speak of. "Then they throw a kid in there for two years and you've got an offense that doesn't fit and doesn't work, and they can't run because their offensive line's not even good enough for a run blocking team. Now, they're saying Kenny Pickett is a failure. He wasn't a failure, the Steelers were a failure." In 2024, after trading away Pickett, Pittsburgh relied on two veteran starters: former Bears first-rounder Justin Fields and Super Bowl 48 champion Russell Wilson. Both left for New York in free agency - Fields signed with the Jets; Wilson, with the Giants. Pickett is now with his third team, the Cleveland Browns, after the Philadelphia Eagles traded him earlier this offseason. The former Pitt product holds a 15-10 career record as a starter with a career completion rate of 62.4%, 4,765 passing yards and 15 touchdowns to 14 interceptions. Terry Bradshaw rips Steelers for Aaron Rodgers pursuit Bradshaw's criticism didn't end at the team's past fiascos. Bradshaw also tackled Pittsburgh's current, months-long courtship of Rodgers, who is still a free agent, even as the Steelers began OTAs on Tuesday. "That's a joke. That to me is just a joke," Bradshaw said. "What are you gonna do? Bring him in for one year, are you kidding me? That guy needs to stay in California. Go somewhere and chew on bark and whisper to the gods out there." Team owner Art Rooney II recently told reporters multiple times that he and the team will wait "a little while longer" on Rodgers to make a decision. In the meantime, the Steelers have three other quarterbacks on their roster: Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson, both of whom signed with the team this offseason, and Will Howard, Pittsburgh's 2025 NFL Draft sixth-round pick. Rudolph has the most starting experience between the three (18 games) and played five seasons with the Steelers prior to joining the Tennessee Titans last year. He re-signed with Pittsburgh on a two-year, $8 million deal in March. In 2024, Rodgers had a completion rate of 63% with 3,897 passing yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. New York let Rodgers know the team planned to go in a different direction in February before releasing him in March. Time will tell whether the Steelers (or Rodgers) will heed Bradshaw's words or if they're destined for another year of regular-season success before an early playoff exit. Pittsburgh has made the playoffs in four of the last five seasons but has not won a postseason game since 2016.

The new 'Beast Mode'? Why Ashton Jeanty was destined to be with Raiders
The new 'Beast Mode'? Why Ashton Jeanty was destined to be with Raiders Show Caption Hide Caption Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty excited to play for Pete Carroll Ashton Jeanty is getting ready to start his NFL career with the Las Vegas Raiders. He hopes he can recreate the magic Pete Carroll had with Marshawn Lynch in Seattle. Ashton Jeanty might have been destined to be coached by Pete Carroll. The Boise State product and 2024 Heisman Trophy finalist grew up watching a former running back who starred under Carroll in the Pacific Northwest. 'I take a lot of different things from different guys. But one of the first guys I really watched, was Marshawn Lynch, crazy,' Jeanty told USA TODAY Sports, during a promotional appearance with Sharpie. 'Just loved his physical running style, and how he broke so many tackles.' Carroll had Lynch in the backfield for seven total seasons when he was the Seattle Seahawks head coach. Lynch rushed for 6,381 yards, was the single season rushing touchdown leader in 2013-14, was named to four Pro Bowls and helped the team win Super Bowl 48. NFL ROOKIE WATCH: Five non-first round players to make noise after minicamp Lynch powered one of the most famous runs in NFL history during his Seattle days and was appropriately nicknamed 'Beast Mode' for his aggressive running style. Under Carroll, Seattle had the NFL's best rushing offense in 2014 and a top-five rushing attack from 2012-15. Fixing Las Vegas' running game has headlined Carroll's responsibilities since being named the Raiders head coach in January. The Raiders averaged an NFL-worst 79.8 rushing yards a contest last season, the fewest single-season average of any club since 2022. Carroll's reputation and the Raiders' inefficient ground attack is why Las Vegas was a popular speculated landing spot for Jeanty ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft. Jeanty compiled 2,601 rushing yards his final year at Boise State, the second-most ever in a single season in FBS history, and won the Doak Walker Award. 'He's doing great. He really is. He's right on point with everything that we're doing. He's studying really hard. He's been really diligent about all aspects. There's nothing that he doesn't find important,' Carroll said of Jeanty last week. 'We're not holding anything back on him. He's getting a lot of plays.' Not only has he gotten plenty of plays, but the No. 6 overall pick believes he's ready for them as the Raiders' new workhorse running back. 'Already, I can see from the run schemes, and how we've started off getting with the guys and OTAs. We want to establish a run game. We want to be a very physical football team. We want to be able to make teams quit in the fourth quarter,' Jeanty explained. 'So just having that identity, coming from the head coach, and understanding that, right? He says it every day at practice, like, 'Hey, running backs, you guys set the tempo for everybody.' "How the defenders can finish every play and chase after the ball, to making the right cuts, pressing the line of scrimmage, all those types of things. I'm super excited for it.' MORE: Breakout rookie candidates for all 32 NFL teams If Jeanty has it his way, maybe he'll create his own variation of 'Beast Mode' with the Silver and Black. 'It's amazing, especially with how he used (Lynch) so much in the rushing attack,' Jeanty said. 'It makes me even more excited. I can kind of be that next iconic running back to play for Pete Carroll.' Follow USA TODAY Sports' Tyler Dragon on X @TheTylerDragon.

As Seahawks sign WR, return man, Russell Wilson gets another 1-year deal--with the Giants
Russell Wilson short-term NFL stays since leaving Seattle continues. The New York Giants have an agreement on a one-year free-agent contract with the former Seahawks Super Bowl-champion and 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback. Wilson, 36, confirmed the deal with the Giants online Tuesday night. It will become official after he passes a physical examination with his new team. 'Been here before… can't wait to do it again. #MetLife @Giants,' he posted on X/Twitter. The Giants' home field of MetLife Stadium is where Wilson and his Seahawks won Super Bowl 48, routing Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos in February 2014. Multiple reports Tuesday said Wilson's deal with New York includes $10.5 million guaranteed and up to a maximum value of $21 million. New York becomes Wilson's third team in 13 months. The Steelers let Wilson become a free agent by allowing his one-year contract to end with the end of the 2024 season. Wilson threw 16 touchdown passes against five interceptions in 12 starts, after he missed the first month and a half of last season injured. He had Pittsburgh at 10-3 and seemingly on its way to the AFC North division title. It seemed he was going to get a new, multi-year contract to be the Steelers' guy beyond 2024. Then he and the Steelers lost five straight games to end the season. That included at their arch-rival Ravens in the first round of the AFC playoffs. Alarmed by the finish, Pittsburgh's decision-makers let Wilson leave. He reportedly made a free-agent visit to the Cleveland Browns before he and the Giants agreed to his latest short-term deal. The Seahawks traded Wilson at his request in March 2022 to the Broncos. That was after his 10 seasons and two Super Bowl starts for Seattle. He signed a $254 million contract with Denver upon arrival. But he lasted only two seasons. Wilson gave Denver an 11-19 record in two seasons as its starting quarterback. The Broncos paid him $124 million in cash for that. Denver released him in March 2024. The Broncos paid him $39 million last year — to play for the Steelers on a veteran-minimum salary from Pittsburgh. Wilson now joins quarterbacks Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito with the Giants. New York had one of the NFL's worst passing offenses behind a bad line in 2024. The team had just 15 touchdown passes in 17 games and the fifth fewest yards passing in the league. So ended the Giants' 3-14 season and former sixth-overall draft pick Daniel Jones' time in New York. The Seahawks continued secondary, short-term free-agency additions two weeks after the market opened. They signed veteran wide receiver, punt returner and kickoff returner Steven Sims. Sims entered the league undrafted in 2019 from Kansas. His first two NFL seasons were with Washington. Then he spent two seasons with Pittsburgh, 1 1/2 with Houston and the end of last season with Seattle coach Mike Macdonald's former Baltimore Ravens. Sims' last game for the Ravens was when he returned punts in Baltimore's loss at the Buffalo Bills in the AFC divisional playoffs Jan. 19. Sims turns 28 next week. In 53 career regular-season games he has 78 catches, 74 punt returns and 62 kickoff returns. Seattle began last season with undrafted rookie Dee Williams and free agent Laviska Shenault as its return men. Then in early December, after Williams and Shenault fumbled multiple returns in the team's narrow win at the New York Jets, the Seahawks released them. They claimed veteran Jaelon Darden off waivers from Cleveland and had him returning kicks late last season. They let Darden's contact expire with the end of the 2024 season.
