New type of recyclable carpet debuted at Super Bowl LIX
The Ernest N. Morial Convention Center is recycling about 40 tons of carpet used for Super Bowl LIX events. Why it matters: The event industry is notorious for making a lot of trash, and industry leaders are trying to make things better. The big picture: The facility used carpet that's made of 100% polypropylene, which is the same plastic in bottle caps, according to information from the convention center. It's the largest installation of this type of carpet, which is easy to break down into reusable material. The carpet was used at the Super Bowl Experience. It was rolled up and shipped to a recycling facility in Georgia. By the numbers: The convention center also... Donated 600 pounds of unserved food to Bethel Colony. Composted 800 pounds of kitchen waste. Recycled 400 pounds of glass. The intrigue: No word about what happened to the carpet Fox used to cover Bourbon Street.

Shepherdstown, W.Va. native helps with 2025 Super Bowl Experience
SHEPHERDSTOWN, — Drake Sims, a Shepherdstown native, recently gained hands-on experience in sports management at the 2025 Super Bowl Experience, according to a community announcement. Sims was one of 15 Hiram (Ohio) College students who traveled to New Orleans from Feb. 5 to Feb. 10 to assist with various aspects of the event. Their responsibilities included fan engagement, ticket verification, red carpet management, activities management and wayfinding. The experience provided the students with an opportunity to learn about the intricacies of planning and managing a large-scale event like the Super Bowl. Andrew White, director of Hiram College's Scarborough School of Business & Communication and assistant professor of psychology and sport management, emphasized the significance of this experience for students pursuing a career in sports management. "This is a great addition to students' resumes. It doesn't get bigger than this in terms of singular large-scale sporting events, and practical experience matters a great deal in this field," White said. The opportunity allowed the students to network and engage with professionals in the sports industry, which is crucial for their future careers. The experience is expected to enhance their understanding of the dynamics of the sports industry and provide them with valuable insights into event management. Jason Kelce Shares the New Orleans Dishes He's Tried: 'Fried Chicken at a Gas Station' Was 'Fantastic' (Exclusive)
Jason Kelce is making his way through the New Orleans food scene! The retired NFL star, 37, is in the Louisiana city for Super Bowl Sunday — which will see his brother Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs take on his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles — and he's not waiting around for game-day eats to enjoy some delicious cuisine. Speaking with PEOPLE at the star-studded flag football game at the Super Bowl Experience on Saturday, Feb. 8, Jason revealed the food items he's been sampling since arriving in the Big Easy. Related: Jason Kelce Says His Relationship with Brother Travis 'Still Feels the Same' Despite Their 'Success' (Exclusive) When asked about what 'NOLA things' he's been up to, the former Eagles center said he 'had some alligator,' along with beignets, gumbo, turtle soup and hurricanes, a fruity New Orleans cocktail. And his most recent bite in the city? A New Orleans classic: delicious poultry from a place that also pumps gas. 'I just ate fried chicken at a gas station, which was fantastic,' Jason recalled. Related: Jason Kelce Reveals Kylie Kelce Does Most of the Grilling in the Family: 'It's Frustrating' (Exclusive) The They Call It Late Night with Jason Kelce and New Heights host also had lots of kind words for the Louisiana city outside of its culinary scene. 'New Orleans is a blast. This city was very equipped to have a celebratory event here,' he told PEOPLE. 'A lot of things to get into, great food, great drinks, great people. It's been a lot of fun.' 'Maybe too much fun,' he added cheekily. The father of four has also done other 'fun stuff' in the city, he said, including getting his palm read — an experience he used to try to predict the Super Bowl LIX outcome, he later revealed in an Instagram video. Jason's try-everything approach to New Orleans eats should come as no surprise to longtime fans and followers of the Kelce brothers, as the former Eagle has always been far less picky with his food than Travis, 35, since they were kids. In a November 2023 episode of the siblings' New Heights podcast, Jason called his younger brother 'super picky,' and said that their family's Thanksgiving celebrations 'always ended in tears, with Travis at the table and Dad screaming at him.' Travis has also said that girlfriend Taylor Swift — who is also in NOLA for the Super Bowl — has encouraged him to 'open up' to new foods, including 'Indian cuisine.' 'I know, my girl Tay is getting you opened up,' Jason said at the time, to which Travis replied, 'She is.' 'She's introducing new foods to you,' the retired center added of the singer. 'It's been one of the greatest things that I've been happy about." Read the original article on People

Derek Carr was conspicuously absent throughout New Orleans' Super Bowl week
It's been hard to miss all the New Orleans Saints players making the rounds in the media this week. Many of them were quarterbacks — backups like Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener either shook hands and took photos with fans at the Super Bowl Experience event at the Caesars Superdome or promoted their sponsorship partners on various podcasts and radio shows. Drew Brees was a popular interview on that same circuit. FOX Sports gave Jameis Winston a microphone and a camera crew and told him to be himself. All of this makes Derek Carr's absence highly conspicuous. Fan favorites of yesteryear like Marques Colston, Jimmy Graham, Thomas Morstead and Mark Ingram II were all out and about, either chopping it up with the media or just taking in the atmosphere. So were current players like Bryan Bresee, Blake Grupe, Ugo Amadi, Demario Davis and Cameron Jordan. But not Carr. Sure, his future with the team is in doubt, but that's also true for guys like Amadi and Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who aren't even under contract next season. They still showed up. So where was he? Carr told reporters a month ago how eager he was to get back to Fresno, Calif. with his wife and four children: 'Excited for my kids to have a place they can call 'home, home.' We've moved a lot and they've been asking me 'where are we going to grow up forever?' We told them Fresno and now we get to do that.' Carr went to college at Fresno State and will be living in the same area as his older brother David, who told the local ABC affiliate he'll also be training there while preparing for the 2025 season. So he's presumably been busy with the move and getting settled in at his family's forever home. Still, it's really disappointing to see so many prominent members of the team, past and present, doing their part to show off New Orleans. All eyes are on the city ahead of the biggest football game of the year. The quarterback Carr replaced (Winston) has been around, just like the guy whose legacy he's been chasing (Brees). Both of his backups (Rattler and Haener) made the effort or were at least compelled by their sponsors to show up. Carr couldn't be bothered to even fly in for a day to chat on Radio Row. When the Pelicans drafted Zion Williamson, Brees delivered a short message to him: If you love New Orleans, this city will love you back. Carr hasn't done that often enough. Regardless of how you feel about how well he's played on the field (for his part, Carr felt strongly enough about it to get out in front of any talk about taking a pay cut), doing work in the community or recording positive radio hits will go a long way. Something as small as recommending his favorite restaurant or some other small local business would win a lot of goodwill. It's a shame that wasn't a priority for him.

Make-A-Wish sends Seal Beach teenager to Super Bowl LIX
Seal Beach resident Carson Fox is now not only cancer-free, but he finds himself in a very enviable position this weekend. Fox, a passionate football fan, is headed to the big game on Sunday. Make-A-Wish Orange County and the Inland Empire has granted his wish of heading to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. Eighteen other 'wish kids' from around the country will also be at the Super Bowl via Make-A-Wish. Fox and his father, mother and brother got into town on Wednesday. 'It's a dream come true to be here, for sure,' Fox, 19, said in a phone interview Friday. 'It's cool not only for me, but just for my whole family. We all kind of went through it together, so to be all here together and celebrate as a family is awesome.' After breaking his ankle as a freshman at Los Alamitos High, Fox found out that he had a rare form of cancer called telangiectatic osteosarcoma. A cancerous tumor forced the amputation of his left leg above the knee in 2021. Following rounds of chemotherapy and physical therapy, he returned to the track with a running blade as a sprinter and thrower for the Griffins, and he was a long-snapper in football. Fox is now a freshman at the University of Alabama, where he competes on the para track and field team. He said he's rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, as they try to thwart the Kansas City Chiefs' hopes of a historic 'three-peat.' Still, he isn't really a big fan of either team. 'I'm a Texans fan back home, but it's really 'Roll Tide,'' he said. 'I'm an Alabama fan.' Fox's experience in New Orleans so far has included a behind the scenes tour of Caesars Superdome, where the game will be played, and VIP access at NFL Honors. He said he's already met NFL players like Detroit Lions star running back Jahmyr Gibbs, San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle and Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin. Friday's activities included the Super Bowl Experience, and Fox and his family will attend the first-ever Super Bowl Host Committee Parade in the French Quarter on Saturday. Make-A-Wish's official sports partner, Fanatics, has provided wish kids with swag and sponsored pre-event activities. 'Football has been a constant source of joy and strength for Carson, and we are so proud to make his Super Bowl wish come true,' said Anne Grey, president and chief executive of Make-A-Wish Orange County and the Inland Empire, in a statement. 'For Carson, we hope that the trip provides him with the strength and inspiration needed to face whatever challenges come his way.' Fox called it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity so far, and he hasn't even made it to game time yet. 'I think the energy will be crazy, for sure,' he said. 'I don't know what to expect. I've never been to a game this big, so we'll see.'
