Browns Reveal Joe Flacco's Role with QBs Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel
Back in January, Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson underwent surgery after re-rupturing a torn Achilles, which puts the team in a very tough spot to open the season on choosing who will be the Week 1 starter. With the season still a good amount away, it's starting to shape up to be an interesting four-man race between veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, as well as incoming rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. Advertisement Considering Flacco is 40 years old and has seen a decent amount of success in his 17-year career, winning Super Bowl XLVII MVP, there's a strong belief he could be a mentor toward the rookies. However, that idea was thoroughly shot down on Friday by general manager Andrew Berry during an appearance on 92.3 The Fan. "Joe's job also isn't to bring along rookies," Berry said. "We have a very experienced and good coaching staff. That's their job. Joe's job is to compete and earn a role, just like the others in the room.' Of course, that kind of statement doesn't come as much of a surprise, because not only is he looking to grab the starting spot, but he's also fighting for a roster spot with both Gabriel and Sanders. Advertisement Somebody getting left behind is inevitable, considering teams usually only keep three quarterbacks on the roster, meaning that either Flacco, Pickett, or one of the rookies will likely be cut by the Browns. Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco (15).Troy Taormina-Imagn Images In an article from A to Z Sports, Brandon Little predicts that Pickett will end up being the odd man out for the Browns, with Flacco, Gabriel and Sanders all securing a spot while Watson starts the season on the injured reserve. Browns' latest signing seemingly signals NFL Draft plan
The Cleveland Browns signed quarterback Joe Flacco to a one-year contract on Friday, the team announced. Flacco's one-year contract is $4 million and could reach up to $13 million with incentives per ESPN. The addition of Flacco could signal that the Browns will not take a quarterback with the No. 2 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. Flacco, 40, is the second quarterback the team has acquired this offseason. The Browns traded for Kenny Pickett and sent Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a 2025 fifth-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles in March. Flacco, Pickett and Deshaun Watson are the three quarterbacks on the Browns' roster, but after Watson re-tore his Achilles tendon in January, he is widely expected to miss the upcoming 2025 season. With the Tennessee Titans seemingly locked in on Miami's Cam Ward for the No. 1 selection, the Browns would have Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, Penn State star Abdul Carter and Colorado's Shedeur Sanders on the board at No. 2. However, with Flacco and Pickett in the fold, the Browns might be more inclined to select Hunter or Carter and wait a year to find their quarterback of the future in the NFL Draft. Flacco returns to the Browns after he spent last season with the Indianapolis Colts. Flacco appeared in eight games and started in six with a 2-4 record. He threw 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions last year. In 2023 with the Browns, Flacco started five games in the regular season in place of the injured Deshaun Watson and helped the team get to the playoffs. In Flacco's five starts, the team went 4-1 while Flacco completed 60.3% of his passes for 1,616 yards with 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Flacco won the NFL's comeback player of the year in 2023. Flacco is entering his 18th season in the NFL. He spent the first 11 seasons of his career with the Baltimore Ravens and was named Super Bowl XLVII MVP as he led the Ravens to a Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers. Flacco has played for the New York Jets, Denver Broncos and Colts, and now will play for the Browns once again. QB Joe Flacco, 40, rejoining Browns on one-year deal
April 11 - Quarterback Joe Flacco is rejoining the Cleveland Browns on a reported one-year, $4 million contract. The Browns confirmed the agreement Friday and Flacco's agent, Joe Linta, confirmed the figures to ESPN. Flacco, 40, spent the 2024 season with the Indianapolis Colts after earning NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors with the Browns in 2023. Flacco, who also met with the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason, can earn up to $13 million with incentives, per his agent. A Super Bowl XLVII MVP with Baltimore, Flacco played his first 11 seasons with the Ravens (2008-18) before moving on to the Denver Broncos (2019), New York Jets (2020-22), Browns and Colts. Heading into his 18th season, Flacco ranks 12th in NFL history in pass completions (4,166), 14th in attempts (6,751), 18th in yards (45,697) and tied for 22nd in passing touchdowns (257). His overall record is 105-86, including a 4-1 mark with the Browns in 2023. Flacco joins a depth chart in Cleveland that includes the injured Deshaun Watson (Achilles) and newcomer Kenny Pickett, who won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles last season. Watson could miss most or all of the 2025 season. The Browns also have the No. 2 overall pick in this month's draft and have met with top prospects Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, Jalen Milroe and Jaxson Dart, among others. --Field Level Media

For the teams still looking for a veteran QB, Joe Flacco becomes a very viable option
As a quartet of teams in need of veteran quarterbacks consider options that include a couple of Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks who were once the highest-paid players in the NFL, a third one who checks the same two boxes could end up being a prime fallback option for one of them. Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson are getting the headlines. Joe Flacco is waiting patiently to see how it plays out. Flacco recently visited the Giants. He's in play, we're told, for jobs with the Steelers, Browns, and Vikings. The Super Bowl XLVII MVP with the Ravens, Flacco secured the best quarterback contract in league history in 2013. (The deal was later renegotiated to give Flacco that title a second time.) Since his time with the Ravens ended, following the arrival of Lamar Jackson in 2018, Flacco has taken whatever he can get. He played for the Broncos in 2019 (eight starts), the Jets from 2020 through 2022 (nine total starts), the Browns in late 2023 (he won Comeback Player of the Year and pushed the team to the playoffs), and the Colts in 2024 (six starts). Flacco is now 40, but he can still throw it. And since he was never a mobile quarterback, the aging of the legs (which always go before the arm) has been a non-issue. He has shown that he loves football. He fully intends to take a job this season, somewhere. And he likely won't be expensive; he made $4.5 million last year. So while Rodgers stares into the ocean to carefully contemplate his options (at a time when dozens of players are making snap decisions) and while Wilson tries to convince the likes of the Browns and Giants that his repertoire consists of more than moonball left and moonball right, Flacco is content to wait. Eventually, he'll get an offer. Maybe more than one. And if the Steelers are looking to go cheaper than Rodgers at the position, Flacco could be their best move. It also would bring Flacco back to the place where his college career began. Yes, Flacco was at Pitt until Tyler Palko arrived. He then parlayed three years at Delaware into a first-round pedigree and had a very good run with the Ravens. Now, the Ravens could be seeing him twice in 2025, as the quarterback of their most hated rival.
