Post-race jockey reports from the 2025 Queensland Derby

Proud Queenslander John O'Shea landed the quinella in the $1 million Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. O'Shea trains in partnership with Tom Charlton and the Sydney training team delivered first and second in the blue ribband with Maison Louis defeating King Of Thunder with Victorian filly Chase Your Dreams in third. The favourite Statuario was beaten early in the straight and finished well back in 14th. He's home! The G1 Queensland Derby belongs to Maison Louis thanks to a lovely ride by @RMaloney_Jockey - and @JohnOSheaRacing get the quinella with King Of Thunder in second spot! ðŸ'¥ ðŸ'° @BrisRacingClub @RaceQLD — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 7, 2025 Maison Louis was having his seventh run of his first racing campaign and was ridden by Ryan Maloney and provided his stallion Super Seth with a third Australian Group 1 win this season. Maison Louis' fourth from seven starts and took his earnings to more than $670,000. This is what the riders thought of their mount's performance in the Queensland Derby. â– â– â– â– â– 1st – MAISON LOUIS (Ryan Maloney) Unbelievable, his breeding suggests he shouldn't get the trip, but he's a beautiful ride, he conserves his energy so well. It was a very dawdling run Derby, and when J-Mac (James McDonald) sort of made his move at the half mile, he increased the tempo, but not by a hell of a lot. We were sort of on the fence and everyone was starting to want to get to that better ground, and John wanted me to get one off, but after the scratchings, we ended up drawing one. But that's why I wanted to be three back the fence, so I had two options when I wanted to stake my claim. I was given the opportunity to come out and it ended up on the back of Waller horse (Imperialist) and yeah he was just too tough. When he got the gap, he pinned his ears back and was just tough as nails. 2nd – KING OF THUNDER (Mark Zahra) He ran really well, I thought we had it won but the stablemate just beat him. 3rd – CHASE YOUR DREAMS (Rachel King) She's absolutely flying this filly. If she'd drawn a gate or had a bit more luck, then she might have been tough to hold out but she couldn't be going any better. 4th – LAVALIER (Kerrin McEvoy) Great effort by James (Cummings) and the horse to travel up from two good runs in Adelaide. He stays and is very genuine, so he'll keep improving. 5th – IMPERIALIST (Tommy Berry) He tried really hard today. There was a question over whether he stays the trip or not, and he doesn't. But it was the perfect opportunity to test him and he'll come back nicely next prep. 6th – DEEP FOCUS (Michael Rodd) He ran enormous. We just copped a squeeze at the 400-metre mark, and that took our momentum away. But he picked himself back up and did a great job, especially for a horse having his first prep. 7th – BELLE DETELLE (James McDonald) It was a really good race. 8th – POLITELY DUN (Jordan Childs) I was really proud of his efforts. We had to go back from the wide gate and he finished off as well as he could. 9th – OUR BENEFACTOR (Joshua Parr) He's a lovely horse, he is just quite unsure of himself in certain situations. But next prep he'll be really nice. 10th – EXISTENTIAL BOB (Jason Collett) The distance is probably a bit far at this level. 11th – FEMMINILE (Tim Clark) She's probably come to the end of her prep. 12th – ROGAN (Koby Jennings) That run will help him grow up a lot. He had to come through the shifty part of the track, but he hit the line really well. 13th – BEAU DAZZLER (Jag Guthmann-Chester) Unfortunately he had a tough run, we were three wide punching the breeze the whole way, so probably didn't get the chance to stay the trip. 14th – STATUARIO (John Allen) Very disappointing. We never got into a good rhythm, and we were always just on one rein. We struggled from the 500-metre mark. 15th – SCINTILLANTE (Billy Egan) It's time for him to go for a spell. 16th – THE MUFFIN MAN (Ethan Brown) That was an end of prep run. 17th – FIRM AGREEMENT (Jamie Mott) He had a fantastic run through the race, he probably just came to the end of his prep. N/A – PARTY CRASHER (Craig Williams) Late scratching at the barriers.

Super Seth steps into New Zealand's elite stallion ranks

'Three Group 1 winners across two countries in a month is freakish, and he keeps backing up with transtasman winners every single week.' Super Seth's season could not have come at a better time as the stud's phenomenal Savabeel nears the end of his breeding career but the legend showed he isn't willling to give up the top dog title just yet. Savabeel will remain New Zealand's only six-figure stallion, standing at an unchanged $100,000, plus GST. Sitting $2.7 million clear of his nearest contender on the New Zealand sires' premiership, Savabeel will secure his 10th New Zealand champion sires' title and will be inducted into the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame in May. This season alone he has sired three Group 1 winners: Atishu, who claimed her third elite-level victory in the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes, along with two new Group 1 winners in Savaglee and Provence, bringing his Group 1 tally to 35. This year, Savabeel produced his highest-priced yearling yet and set a new record for the highest-priced filly ever sold at Karaka – $2.4 million for the full sister to Orchestral. 'He deserves every accolade and we are very proud of everything he's done and is doing for the New Zealand industry,' said Chittick. 'He has great vitality and we're heading into the season with a bright, happy and healthy horse – the only thing we will avoid breeding this year at his age is maidens. He's had another incredible season on the track and in the sales ring, and he just keeps reminding us why he's so special.' Waikato Stud will also stand Ardrossan ($20,000), Noverre ($10,000) and Banquo ($3000) at unchanged fees next season while the ever-consistent Ocean Park will stand at a slightly reduced of $15,000, all fees being plus GST. Michael Guerin wrote his first nationally published racing articles while still in school and started writing about horse racing and the gambling industry for the Herald as a 20-year-old in 1990. Kensington and Gosford previews: Engine to crank up on Anzac Day

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Bryce Heys' early purchase of a ticket on the Super Seth train turned juggernaut is paying off big time for connections of Karaka Yearling graduate and Kensington-bound three-year-old Engine Room. Super Seth is one of six stallions on the Waikato Stud roster alongside the nine-time Champion New Zealand Sire, Savabeel, and the five-time Group 1 winner Ocean Park. Super Seth already has claimed one title of his own after being crowned Champion First Season Sire in 2023/24. The son of Dundeel currently has a commanding lead over Snitzel on the Two-Year-Old Sires' table for this season thanks in part to daughter La Dorada's win in the Karaka Million earlier this year. The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! Heys first spotted Engine Room at NZB's Karaka sales complex, an hour south of Auckland, at the firm's main sale in January 2023. It was then and there that Heys forked out $150,000 to secure the son of Super Seth and the two-time French black-type performer Mary D'or. 'I have always been a rap on Super Seth,' Heys said. 'I love the (Dundeel) sire-line and when Waikato go out on a limb to stand a stallion like that, that always adds merit to your thoughts as well. 'I was deadset keen on buying one from his first crop and ended up buying Engine Room. I bought another this year and he appears to be going particularly well.' Engine Room, who contests the Benchmark 64 Handicap (1250m) on the Kensington, has paid back about half of his purchase price within the space of just three starts. He would have squared the ledger had he won the Midway last Saturday at Randwick as predicted by many but that test was put on hold given the added degree of difficulty owing to a wide draw. 'I was a little bit lucky last Saturday,' Heys began. 'I had another horse in the race which is very rare because we're a small stable, and I knew it was going to race very well from the better gate so it made it easy to explain to my owners who own both horses. 'I just felt that the best thing to do was to leave Engine Room at home. 'We think that he goes alright. He's shown that he has got some form of ability, so I want to run him where I can put him in a scenario to give him a chance to win again whereas if we had of gone around the other day, he would have run a good fourth or fifth with the rail out and being back and wide. 'I actually would have liked to have run him at Randwick (Saturday) but he's drawn the car park again. 'He'll get his time to run in a Saturday race, sooner rather than later.' Heys has a second chance for an Anzac Day win on the Kensington track via the exceedingly well-bred colt Faceoff in the Maiden Plate (1250m). The flashy chestnut is out of Stella Vega who is a half-sister to Heys former barnstormer par excellence, Spieth. And while Faceoff arrives in town with two 'lasts' next to his name, he has rattled off 33 second last 600m sectionals in each of those respectable losses at unsuitable venues. 'His form looks a bit plain but I feel that he'll run very well. He is looking for that 1200-1250m now. 'This will be his career best run for whatever that's worth.' ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Wyong trainer Wayne Seelin has four chances to notch his 100th winner when Gosford hosts its annual Anzac Day meeting. Seelin's first winner came at home, back in February 2003, when the Bowness Stud-bred mare Sky Can Hurri won the last race on the card. A further 16 wins of Seelin's 99 (not out) were scored by the iron-horse Isorich who retired with 155 starts under his belt and earnings in excess of $800,000. Two of Seelin's four runners this week could be politely regarded as 'batting bunnies' so if he is to reach his century, it will likely be thanks to the sluggers Capital Jicinta or Apache Breeze. Capital Jicinta belied her $51 starting price when a brave and determined third in her 1000m assignment eight days ago. The fifth generation descendant of broodmare gem Easy Date's mission this time around is the Glason Group Maiden Plate over 1100m. 'She's not a perfect 'barrier horse', she comes out in the air a little bit,' Seelin warned. 'It's a hard thing to get them to stop doing so I think it's possible that could happen for the next couple of starts until she learns to flatten out a bit coming out of the gate. 'Provided she isn't too far off them, she is tough and tenacious, and she's got a bit of ability. 'She's got to be some chance.' Seelin can count himself somewhat unlucky not to have participated in the recently completed Provincial-Midway Championships Final via his occasionally unlucky but frequently barnstorming gelding, Apache Breeze. The son of Golden Rose winner Duporth finished seventh in the Gosford March 15 Qualifier and the Wild Card at Wyong after that, each time with excuses. 'He needs a bit of luck around the tighter circuits because he's probably better if you ride him a little bit quiet,' Seelin said. 'But around these smaller tracks, you need to be a little bit handier, which he also can do. 'He's pretty versatile but from barrier 10, we are going to need a little bit of luck but he's really feeling well and probably back in the easiest race he's been in for a while.' Apache Breeze counts one of, if the not the best, racehorses of all time as a family member. His tenth dam is Entreaty, who when matched with the stallion Nightmarch, produced the immortal Phar Lap.
