Four Reasons NHRA Racer Ida Zetterström Is Supercharged For Gatornationals

Top Fuel racer Ida Zetterström soaks up Gainesville dragstrip's history, lore. It's where she first held a Wally statue for her friend. Now she wants her own. She has high hopes for herself, teammate Alexis DeJoria by Saturday's end of qualifying, on International Women's Day. This weekend's Gatornationals will mark the first time Ida Zetterström, driver of the JCM Racing Top Fuel Dragster will compete at Florida's storied Gainesville Raceway. But already she has a swirl of memories as she and Funny Car mate Alexis DeJoria are poised to launch the first all-female nitro team in NHRA history this weekend. Zetterström said, 'I've seen records broken here. I've seen a lot of history being made, and I can't wait to be a part of the race this weekend.' Last year Zetterström was a behind-the-scenes observer, helping teammate Tony Schumacher mix his fuel and politely visiting with fans who asked if she was Schumacher's wife or girlfriend or if she was a crew member. 'But this will be the first time I will ever race in Gainesville myself,' she said, 'so I'm really looking forward to that.' 'It's very cool for me to get to race this weekend at the Gatornationals because Gainesville was actually the first NHRA race I ever attended. So it holds a special place in my heart. I've been to Gainesville several times but never as a competitor,' Zetterström said. 'The first time I was in Gainesville, we were watching one of our dear friends, Markus [Svensson], race over here in Stock and Super Stock. And he picked up a Wally that weekend. His trophy was actually the first Wally I ever held,' she said. 'Sadly, he passed away a couple of weeks ago, so it will be really special to be able to be out here racing this weekend. I wish he was here with us. Definitely a lot of emotions going into this weekend with all that in mind.' Zetterström is part of a history-making tandem – which will make its first start at the racetrack that made history for women before. In 2006, Pro Stock Motorcycle winner Angelle Sampey combined with runners-up Melanie Troxel (Top Fuel) and Erica Enders (Pro Stock) to become the first trio of women to advance to final rounds at a single event. That is the most to achieve that distinction, and they were first. In 2022 at the Gatornationals, Karen Stoffer beat Angie Smith in the final round (the quickest side-by-side bike pass, 6.700 seconds to 6.723), only the third time the Pro Stock Motorcycle class featured two women. At that same event, Stoffer set the Pro Stock Motorcycle national elapsed-time record at 6.665 seconds. At that time, Enders (Pro Stock) and Brittany Force (Top Fuel) already were the national record owners in their classes. So that marked the first time three women owned national records at the same time. So it's no wonder Zetterström is energized to race with DeJoria, a 12-year veteran and six-time race winner. The Swede said, 'I think having the first ever all-female nitro team is going to be very cool to hit the track together, especially with it being International Women's Day this Saturday. I feel like we both have very high energy going into the season and I can't wait to build on that.' The two are scheduled to appear together at 11:30 Friday morning at the Nitro Alley Stage's Mission Chips & Chat. 'We are still working hard to make it so that we're able to run a full schedule or as close to a full schedule as possible,' Zetterström said. 'We had a pre-season test session last week, and we feel like we got a lot of valuable data out of that. We saw some good improvement on the new things we were trying, which feels very hopeful to the start the year. 'I've been working really hard this off-season at being the best version of a driver that I can be. We've got such a strong team, and we are eager to get out here and fight for round-wins, quicker times, and Wally trophies when we're on the track. And then we're obviously fighting for more funding off the track to make the championship hunt,' she said.
