These Are the Best Bars in New York City Right Now—Including Some T+L Editor Favorites
Fresh off the 2025 edition of North America's 50 Best Bars, New York City once again proved why it's one of the world's greatest drinking cities. The annual awards, held at the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver, unveiled its prestigious list during a spectacular live ceremony—and NYC dominated, claiming an impressive 11 spots in the top 50, more than any other destination. Superbueno, the Lower East Side cantina celebrating Mexican-American heritage, held firm at No. 2 for the second year in a row. The festive watering hole also clinched the coveted title of Best Bar in Northeast USA 2025, and co-owner Nacho Jimenez says it's a testament to his team's hard work—and to the power of community. 'It's a great honor, particularly to represent Mexican-American culture in the bar world and have all these eyes on us,' he told Travel + Leisure . 'This recognition validates the hard work our team does day in and day out, and the passion they've shown to our guests and to the brand. It truly means a lot to hold onto both these titles in just the two short years that we've been open.' Superbueno takes an elevated approach to spotlighting Mexican identity and flavors. 'We've carved out a space for ourselves that didn't previously exist,' Jimenez added. 'Our drinks are inspired by iconic Mexican ingredients and dishes, seen through the lens of a sophisticated New York cocktail culture.' First-timers can expect a well-rounded menu that speaks to various palates, but if you need a starting point, go for the Vodka Y Soda (a bright and refreshing guava highball) or the Fresca Tonic (a gin, sotol, hazelnut tonic, and honeydew agua fresca creation) that also comes in a non-alcoholic version. 40 Best Things to Do in New York City 21 of the World's Coolest Hotel Bars Rounding out the top 10: The West Village's Sip & Guzzle made a bold debut at No. 5—earning the highest new entry recipient honors—and the Financial District's sky-high stunner Overstory came in at No. 6. 'Sip & Guzzle is such a fun concept with delicious food to pair with the top-notch drinks,' Susmita Baral, a senior editor at T+L said. 'Upstairs is Sip and downstairs is Guzzle—and both floors have unique menus." For the first time this year, North America's 50 Best Bars expanded its rankings to showcase venues listed from 51 to 100, further celebrating the outstanding talent across the continent's cocktail industry. Here are the other New York City bars recognized in the lineup—some T+L favorites from this list include Employee's Only, Shinji's, The Long Island Bar. The Clemente Bar (No. 11) Martiny's (No. 15) Employee's Only (No. 18): "It's still iconic after all these years and has the best steak tartare in the city and highly effective martinis," Paul Brady, T+L's news director, said. Double Chicken Please (No. 19) Maison Premiere (No. 33): "Cheaper than buying a plane ticket to New Orleans and always a good idea," said Brady of the New Orleans-style establishment. Katana Kitten (No. 42) Angel's Share (No. 43) Dante (No. 46) The Dead Rabbit (No. 57) Dante West Village (No. 60) The Long Island Bar (No. 64): "Long Island Bar is a Brooklyn institution for a reason—the tiny booths and colorful string lights give it a cozy, nostalgic vibe," said Kelly Hires, the associate director of brand communications at T+L, said. She recommends the 'A Martini' and the seasonal summer frozen Pina Colada. Attaboy (No. 66) Bar Snack (No. 85): "This place feels like you stepped into your uncle's Texas basement in the '70s ... but he happens to also be the best bartender around," Morgan Ashley Parker, T+L's associate editorial director of commerce, said. "I first came for the snack-sized daiquiris that inspired the bar's name, but I return for unique cocktails (ahem, Salad Negroni) and tasty bar snacks like spicy peanut butter noodles worth canceling a dinner reservation so you can simply stay here and drink more." Shinji's (No. 90): "It's a bar in a small space with a huge presence, giving patrons a chance to immerse themselves in a unique imaginative world with Japanese inspired cocktails and (very) fresh seafood," Kareema Bee, a senior video producer at T+L, said. The Portrait Bar (No. 93) Paradise Lost (No. 95) Bar Contra (No. 98)

NYC dominates North America's 50 Best Bars 2025 list — with East Village's Superbueno at No. 2
Cheers to NYC! North America's 50 Best Bars of 2025 has been revealed — and it was an NYC takeover. Superbueno, a Mexican-American cocktail bar in the East Village, is little over two years old, yet it's already achieved the title of second-best bar on the continent. Ignacio 'Nacho' Jimenez, pictured holding Superbueno's Green Mango Martini, partnered with restaurateur Greg Boehm to open the East Village bar in 2023. Superbueno 'It's a true honor to be part of this list. This is a huge recognition and a validation of the way we approach hospitality, in our own SUPERBUENO style, that is based on community and the guest experience,' co-owner Ignacio 'Nacho' Jimenez told The Post. 'I'm so proud of what we've accomplished in just two years.' The hotspot opened on the corner of 1st Street and 1st Avenue in 2023, taking over the Boilermaker. In short order, Superbueno landed a coveted spot on last year's 50 Best list at No. 27. Those who approach the cozy yet playfully adorned drinking room are likely to see a line of patrons around the block waiting to be called for a seat at the bar, one of the few wooden booths or even just a space to stand at the communal table. The backlit bottles make up most of the decor inside the place, which becomes flooded with pink or red light as the sun sets. Superbueno's Vodka Y Soda adds a twist on the classic cocktail with guava. theworlds50best Although he has trouble choosing his favorites, Jimenez recommends Superbueno newbies try their take on a guava highball, the Vodka Y Soda, or the Roasted Corn Sour, which celebrates corn — an iconic ingredient of Mexico. For food, served until 1:30ish every night, the head honcho suggests the pork belly tacos — which he says he eats every day — the Birria Grilled Cheese and Mole Mushroom Nacho. Jimenez, former head bartender of Ghost Donkey, wanted to honor his heritage, love of libations and the city where he pours them. To do this, he sought the help of Greg Boehm, the brains behind Mace, The Cabinet and Katana Kitten — which fell at No. 42 on the list. 'We're a community and culturally driven space that highlights Mexican flavors with a sophisticated New York City approach to cocktails,' Jimenez said. 'Our hospitality is based on seeing every element that constitutes the space as a tool to elevate the guest experience — from the food, service, drinks, music, lighting, and staff. They all play an integral role and are equally important.' Sip & Guzzle (No. 5) and Clemente Bar (No. 11) joined the list year for the first time this year. And classics including Overstory (No. 6), Martiny's (No. 15), Employees Only (No. 18), Double Chicken Please (No. 19), Maison Premiere (No. 33), Katana Kiten (No. 42) — also owned by Boehm — Angel's Share (No. 43), Dante (No. 46) added to make NYC reign with 11 spots. Mexico City came in close with the top spot, Handshake Speakeasy — which was listed as No. 1 last year too — and nine bars recognized in all.

North America's 50 Best Bars Reveals Its 2025 List; Crowns Industry Icon
The winners are revealed at a gala in Vancouver on Tuesday, April 29th, 2025 The 2025 list of North America's 50 Best Bars has just been revealed. And for the second year in a row the top spot belongs to Handshake Speakeasy, a sleek and moody parlor in the Colonia Juárez district of Mexico City. Number two on the list was also a repeat performance from last year: Superbueno--a playful Mexican-American cocktail lounge in New York's East Village. Though the Mexican capital again bested the Big Apple when it comes to holding the number one watering hole, New York can still claim the greatest number of top 50 bars of any city in North America, with 11 in total. That number includes notable newcomers such as Clemente Bar and Sip & Guzzle, craft darlings which are expected to climb higher towards the top of lists like these in the months and years to come. Over on the West Coast the biggest winner was Mírate. Number 12 on the list, it's the biggest climber this time around, jumping 34 spots from its premiere at the 2024 North America's 50 Best. The stylish restaurant and bar in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles boasts one of the country's broadest collections of agave spirits. And beverage director Maxwell Reis is shaping these stellar liquids into an inventive stable of cutting edge cocktails. 2025 Roku Industry Icon Julie Reiner Meanwhile, the highest honor for an individual bartender in 2025 went out to Julie Reiner. The founder of Clover Club and Milady's in New York was named the Roku Industry Icon. The award takes its name from the Japanese gin brand from Suntory that's been a hit with craft mixologists ever since debuting back in 2017. To chose the winner, 300 members of the 50 Best voting academy are asked to nominate someone who has made the most significant contribution in advancing the bar industry. Reiner garnered more votes than anyone else. "Receiving the Roku Industry Icon Award was an honor, but I was more honored to be there among my friends and family and peers to see how far we've all come," says Reiner, of receiving the recognition at a packed gala at the JW Marriott in Vancouver, Canada. 'It's a privilege to work in this industry. It's hard. It can be defeating. It can be backbreaking. But it can also be fun. And exciting. And enlightening. So to still be here kicking around with all the great new faces that are constantly discovering their love of bartending is something I certainly don't take for granted.' This mark's the fourth iteration of North America's 50 Best Bars. It was launched in 2022 by William Reed Ltd, the same organization responsible for World's 50 Best Restaurants and World's 50 Best Bars. The runaway success of those ongoing ventures has led the company to create more specific regional offshoots, including Asia's 50 Best Bars, Asia's 50 Best Restaurants and, most recently, the World's 50 Best Hotels. Previous winners for North America's 50 Best Bars--prior to Handshake Speakeasy--include Double Chicken Please (2023) and Attaboy (2022). For the complete 2025 rundown, from 1-50, click here. These U.S. bars were just named the best in North America
If you're like a lot of us, you look forward to a bar visit on your vacation. It's always fun to see seasonal or specialty cocktails on the list, and soaking up the boozy atmosphere and music can be elating. (Truth be told, we also love a great mocktail and staying sharp for the evening). So if you're thinking of building a trip around visiting one of the continent's best bars, we're thrilled for you. Winners of North America's Best Bars 2025 have just been announced, and 26 of those 50 are here in the U.S. There are also 14 in Mexico (including the No. 1 pick, Handshake Speakeasy in Mexico City), eight from Canada and two from the Caribbean. The first U.S. bar on the list is Superbueno in New York, which was also No. 2 last year —way to hold strong! Jewel of the South in New Orleans rose from the No. 6 spot to No. 4. Overstory in New York fell from No. 3 to No. 6, taking over the Jewel's former spot. Other U.S. bars in the top 10 are Sip & Guzzle in New York, showing up at No. 5 out of nowhere (it wasn't on the list last year) and Kumiko in Chicago, rising to No. 10 from No. 19. Sip & Guzzle has an enormously interesting backstory, based on an 1874 contingent of Japanese samurai who came to New York, where bartender Jerry Thomas invented a cocktail specifically for the Japanese diplomat Tateishi Onojirou Noriyuki. Today in Tokyo, Shingo Gokan's The SG Club imagines the kind of bar those samurai would have opened upon returning, and in a playful turn, Sip & Guzzle (with the same initials) imagines the bar that the samurai would have opened if they returned to New York with everything they'd learned. That's for sure on my visit list the next time I'm in New York! The Best Bars in North America 2025: 1. Handshake Speakeasy, Mexico City 2. Superbueno, New York 3. Tlecān, Mexico City 4.
