Volvo ES90: An all-electric sedan that defines the future

Volvo has been slowly adding to its all-electric fleet, and now the Swedish automaker is ready to unveil its latest and greatest model. The 2025 Volvo ES90 comes designed with sustainability in mind, which both pushes the manufacturer towards its zero-emissions goal and offers transparency to consumers. At a glance, it's clear that Volvo has pulled out all the stops in developing one of the most advanced EVs to ever grace Volvo ES90 follows in the footsteps of the EX90 SUV by utilizing the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack. The Superset features the hardware and software modules that will underpin Volvo EVs going forward. The ES90 features a centralized system capable of performing more than 500 trillion operations per second. As a result, the ES90 will utilize over-the-air updates to both improve and grow functionalities within the EV in the future. 'The Volvo ES90 is one of the most technically advanced cars on the market today and is designed to be improved further with time,' said Anders Bell, Volvo chief engineering and technology officer. 'Built on our state-of-the-art Superset tech stack, the ES90 puts safety at the forefront.' Ride comfort comes standard thanks to Volvo's third-generation electric motors and dual-chamber air suspension paired with an active chassis. Per Volvo, the ES90's cabin is the quietest ever from the Swedish automaker and also comes equipped with advanced air purification technology. The Volvo ES90 is the automaker's second all-electric model to feature Safe Space Technology. The EV's safety systems and overall design were developed based on real-world traffic accidents and safety knowledge. The electric sedan continuously collects real-time data on the road that allows Volvo engineers to improve safety functions. The ES90's system is also capable of detecting and recognizing when the driver's attention leaves the road, so the EV itself can step in as needed. While Rear Occupant Systems aren't exactly uncommon, Volvo's is particularly sensitive, reportedly being able to sense something as minor as a baby upcoming Volvo ES90 features 800V technology designed to deliver faster charging speeds and provide a longer driving range. The ES90 will offer up to 435 miles on a single charge, putting it on the upper end of the entire EV industry. Not only that, but the ES90's hardware is bi-directional, so you can use the sedan to power your home or reduce electricity costs by returning power to the grid. On top of its 435-mile range, the Volvo ES90 also offers blazing fast charging speeds. Thanks to Volvo's 800V technology, the ES90 can add roughly 186 miles of range in just 10 minutes of charging. 'Our 800V technology marks another significant technological upgrade for our customers as we move towards full electrification,' said Anders Bell. 'It makes our electric cars even more efficient, helps you charge your electric Volvo faster, and go further on a single charge.' The Volvo ES90 will come with three powertrain options, each of which takes advantage of the Swedish automaker's latest tech developments. The entry-level Single Motor model comes in rear-wheel drive and features a 92 kWh battery. This base trim pumps out 329 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. That kind of power puts the ES90 sedan at 60 mph in 6.7 seconds. The Twin Motor version attaches an electric motor on the front and rear, which means all-wheel drive is standard. In terms of performance, the mid-range ES90 brings 442 horsepower and 494 lb-ft of torque to the road. The Twin Motor trim comes equipped with a 106 kWh battery and strikes 60 mph in just 5.3 you want peak performance, the Twin Motor Performance model is right up your alley, with a standard all-wheel drivetrain and a 106 kWh battery. The range-topping trim delivers 670 horsepower and 635 lb-ft of torque that propels the electric sedan to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. Regardless of powertrain, the Volvo ES90 boasts a top speed of 112 mph. All models can charge from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes at a 350 kW charging station. View the 14 images of this gallery on the original article The Volvo ES90 combines the best of both worlds by pairing the simplicity of a sedan with the spaciousness and elevated seating of an SUV. The latest EV rolls out on a 196.9-inch wheelbase, which means passengers will have plenty of space. The ventilated rear seats can be reclined individually and feature a lounge armrest. An electrochromic panoramic roof can let light into the cabin or darken to create a shade. Sustainable materials and colors come inspired by Scandinavian nature. In terms of tech, the ES90 features Digital Key Plus, allowing drivers to access the vehicle from their smartphone. A 14.5-inch touchscreen display and nine-inch driver display come standard, as does a head-up display for both improved safety and convenience. The Volvo ES90 also includes a 25-speaker Bower & Wilkins premium audio system that provides a pristine listening experience. The infotainment system itself utilizes Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms from Qualcomm Technologies. Google services, including Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play Store, come built in. 5G connectivity also comes built in, allowing for ultra-fast data transfer and Volvo ES90 is manufactured at one of the Swedish automaker's climate neutral production facilities using 100% renewable energy. The vehicle itself is made with 29% recycled aluminum, 18% recycled steel, and 16% recycled polymers and bio-based materials. The 800V technology provides improved efficiency through electric driving and the charging system itself. The Volvo ES90 features the automaker's battery passport that utilizes blockchain technology to trace raw materials and improve transparency for customers. The addition of the ES90 to Volvo's lineup is just the automaker's latest step toward full electrification, and puts the Swedish company closer to its goal of net zero emissions by 2040. At a glance, the Volvo ES90 seems like a run-of-the-mill all-electric luxury car, but the tech that underpins it is so much more. With a range exceeding 400 miles, a powerful processing center, and charging speeds few automakers can match, the ES90 could very well be on the edge of the next generation of EVs. While I'm holding out hope that solid-state batteries will actually increase EV range dramatically and make their way to mass production within the next few years, Volvo's latest entry is a solid step forward. New Volvo ES90 – sexy saloon takes on Tesla Model S with 435-mile range and super-fast charging

Volvo's new ES90 saloon has broken cover with news of an advanced 800V electrical system that makes it the fastest-charging Volvo model yet. Although the new five-door saloon shares the same SPA2 platform as the EX90 SUV, it gets a more advanced electrical system that means faster charging, adding 186 miles in just 10 minutes at a 350kW fast charger for the largest 106kWh battery. A 10 to 80 per cent charge will take 20 minutes at the same charging rate. Volvo claims a maximum range of 435 miles for the 106kWh ES90, helped by its slippery shape. Volvo says its drag coefficient of 0.25 makes it the most aerodynamic Volvo ever, yet it still has the brand's trademark boxy shape. As well as the 106kWh battery, there'll be a 92kWh version that will provide up to 404 miles of range and is expected to cost from around £70,000. Single motor, twin motor four-wheel drive and twin motor performance versions will be offered with the latter claiming a 0-62mph time of four seconds. Two trim levels – Plus and Ultra – will be offered in the UK with the most expensive twin motor performance ES90 likely to cost around £88,000. As well as the advanced 800V electrical architecture, the ES90 is based on Volvo's Superset tech stack, just like the EX90. However, the saloon gains an advantage with the use of dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin tech, making it the most powerful Volvo in terms of core computing capacity. The benefits include improved safety, with the ES90 getting one lidar, five radars, seven cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors as part of the brand's Safe Space technology. Software-over-the-air updates will continually update the car's electrical systems, potentially making it more efficient, too. Newer models of the EX90 will also come with the latest Nvidia tech on board. The look of the ES90 is very Volvo with its familiar grille and front lights, broad shoulder line, but with a sleeker sloping roofline that leads down to a hatchback opening at the rear. A 3.1m long wheelbase promises excellent space in what Volvo says is its quietest-ever cabin, while there are reclining seats available in the back and a full-length electrochromic panoramic roof that can switch between clear and shade at the touch of a button. There's also a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system delivering 1,610 watts of power and supporting Dolby Atmos with a special Abbey Road Studios mode. Also inside the typically Scandinavian cabin, with its cool combination of woods and metals, is a 9in driver display and 14.5in infotainment screen with Google services built-in, although Apple CarPlay is also standard. Your Apple or Android phone can also be used as a digital key for added convenience. Sustainability is also top of mind for the Swedes. The ES90 made with 29 per cent recycled aluminium, 18 per cent recycled steel, as well as 16 per cent recycled polymers and bio-based materials. The ES90 is also equipped with the hardware that will give it bi-directional charging, allowing owners to power their homes from the car's battery or return power to the grid. Although Volvo says that the ES90 will go on sale this month, first deliveries are at least a year away with cars expected in the UK in March or April 2026.

Electric Volvo ES90 Flagship Sedan Will Have Huge Processing Power To Keep You Safe

Though it has backed off from its goal of only offering electric cars by the end of the decade, extending the lifespans of some of its hybrid models like the XC90, Volvo is still preparing to launch a slew of new fully electric models over the next couple years, and coming next month will be the ES90. Sedans aren't dead yet, at least not higher-end ones, as the ES90 will be an electric replacement for the current S90. Volvo is keeping the ES90's design close to its chest for now, releasing just a few teasers that mainly show off its greenhouse, but the company is divulging a ton of details on the ES90's tech hardware. In profile the ES90 looks pretty similar to the current S90, but with what looks like flusher glass and an even longer wheelbase. A crisp character line runs from nose to tail, and the rear end seems to nicely wrap around at the corners. In the top-down image, we can see that the ES90 will have additional upright lamps that run alongside the rear window, like on the EX90, along with the main taillights that will feature in the more traditional location at the tailgate. It also looks like the ES90 might be a liftback instead of a sedan with a normal trunk, which would be awesome. Read more: Volvo says the ES90 will be the most powerful car it has ever produced — in terms of core computing capacity, that is. It features an updated version of Volvo's Superset tech stack that debuted with the EX90, which is one set of hardware and software systems that will be used on all of the brand's future EVs. This setup lets Volvo make improvements more frequently and more efficiently across all models, in aspects from driving range and performance to connectivity and infotainment features. The ES90 will have a dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin primary core computer, versus the EX90 that has one AGX Orin and one AGX Xavier. I'm an art school dropout, so I'll just let Volvo tell you what that all means: DRIVE AGX Orin is NVIDIA's core computer for intelligent cars that orchestrates various essential systems and processes inside the car at ultra-fast speeds. With a high level of computational power – around 508 trillion operations per second (also known as TOPS) – it manages functionalities such as AI-based, state-of-the-art active safety features, car sensors and efficient battery NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin-powered primary core computer provides an eightfold improvement in AI compute performance compared with DRIVE AGX Xavier, enabling us to gradually increase the size of our deep learning model and neural network from 40 million to 200 million parameters. This will happen over time as we collect more data and continue to develop the model, with the overall goal of improving customer experience and – most importantly – safety levels. Being a Volvo, a lot of that computing power will be put to use in the ES90's safety systems. In terms of hardware, the ES90 will have one lidar at the front of the roof, five radars, eight cameras, and twelve ultrasonic sensors (four fewer ultrasonic sensors than the EX90). Volvo calls that setup its Safe Space Technology — that's some woke nonsense if I've ever heard it — and says its goal is to make all of your journeys safer and more enjoyable by detecting obstacles even in darkness or inclement weather and engaging proactive safety systems. When I drove the EX90 back in September, Volvo still had a bunch of kinks to work out with its various safety and infotainment systems, with not all of the functionality turned on yet. Hopefully the ES90 will come to market with all of those problems smoothed out. Despite all of this tech, Volvo says it doesn't want it to be overwhelming. The company says "we have designed cars that place people first for nearly 100 years. We always use technology with purpose, equipping our cars with the right amount of tech to ensure a comfortable and safe ride. As such, the ES90 is designed to provide you with the mental peace and balance we all need in our hectic lives." Sounds great to me. The ES90 will make its full debut on March 5. Like the outgoing S90, it will likely be made in China, and it'll ride on the same SPA2 platform as the EX90. Following the ES90's debut will be a mid-size ES60 sedan and EX60 crossover, to replace the gas-powered S60 and XC60. Read the original article on Jalopnik.

2026 Volvo ES90 Electric Sedan Teased Ahead of March Reveal

released a new teaser for the electric mid-size luxury sedan ahead of its full reveal on March 5. The teaser highlights the ES90's software and details how the SPA2 architecture it is built on will allow continuous updates. When it arrives, the ES90 will be built on the same platform as the and will sit alongside the current S90 sedan. Volvo has released a new teaser for the electric ES90 as it prepares to reveal the car in full next month. The mid-size luxury sedan was first teased during an investor-relations meeting last September, but the full reveal is scheduled to be livestreamed on March 5. The new info from the automaker focuses on the "Superset tech stack" set of software and hardware modules underpinning the ES90. The sedan is Volvo's next step in working towards software-defined vehicles. The hope is that the technology will allow for faster and more frequent over-the-air updates that improve the overall customer experience as well as safety. Volvo says that additional connectivity features and improved range are two potential upsides of the technology. The sedan will be the second Volvo built on the brand's SPA2 architecture, which it shares with the EX90 flagship SUV. Volvo says that another benefit of the Superset stack is that improvements to one car can be concurrent with another. As they'll share a platform, the ES90 will likely use the same 111.0-kWh battery pack as the EX90 SUV, though the sedan will likely edge out the SUV's 300- to 310-mile range estimate thanks to its smaller size. Previous plans from Volvo will position the ES90 alongside the gas-burning S90 sedan, with the brand selling both models while it transitions to an electric-only future. More information surrounding the pricing, powertrain, and technology should become available when the car is revealed next month.
