Ranchi: With the Raj Bhavan seeking applications for the post of vice chancellors (VC) in four state universities as the terms of incumbent ones are set to expire, senior university teachers rued that the delay in their promotions has rendered them ineligible for the to the University Grants Commission, one of the eligibility criteria is a minimum experience of 10 years as a professor, which a few teachers in the state this week, the Raj Bhavan sought applications for VCs of (RU), Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University (DSPMU), (JSOA), and Jamshedpur Women's University (JWU).Meanwhile, senior teachers in the state universities from the 1992, 1996 and 2008 batches are awaiting promotion, even as a number of them have retired from principal-in-charge of Doranda College, Raj Kumar Sharma, whose promotion is due for over a decade, said, "Due to the delay in promotion, many university teachers from Jharkhand are ineligible to apply for the VC posts. It is de-motivating for the state's university teachers."Another senior teacher, the principal in charge of Ranchi Women's College, Supriya Ranjan, whose promotion is also pending, said, "Apart from being deprived of applying for VCs, the teachers are also denied the opportunity to become professors."Speaking about the issue, the convener of the Jharkhand University Teachers' Association, Kanjiv Lochan, said, "We met the governor in the past over the issue and requested that promotion be expedited. Since higher education is in the concurrent list of the Constitution, the state should take steps to ensure that teachers who get promotion as professors with retrospective effect in future can apply for the VC post."Notably, universities sent a list of candidates eligible to be promoted to professors to the Jharkhand Public Service Commission long ago. It is learnt that the recommendations are under scrutiny.
