No new films in Andhra, Telangana as exhibitors announce theatre strike from June 1

After a dry summer with no major star-led releases and few box office successes, Telugu cinema is pinning its hopes on June's packed release slate. However, things have taken a turn, with cinema exhibitors in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana reportedly announcing an indefinite shutdown of theatres from June 1, 2025. The protest is aimed at the current rental-based system, which they claim is no longer to a report by M9 News, the decision was made at a joint meeting held at the Telugu Film Chamber. The meeting was attended by over 60 exhibitors and key producers, including Suresh Babu and Dil cited unsustainable operating costs as the primary reason behind the move. They are demanding a shift to a revenue-sharing model, where a percentage of ticket sales is shared with them, instead of the current system. At present, exhibitors pay a fixed daily rental to screen films, regardless of how a movie performs at the box office. This model has become financially unviable for many. The theatre shutdown threatens to disrupt several major film releases scheduled for June, starting with Kamal Haasan's 'Thug Life' (Telugu version), which is slated for release on June 5 and could potentially be the trailer for the film Thug Life: As per a Gulte report, the exhibitors are preparing to submit a formal request along with a bandh notice. They have stated that theatres will remain closed until the revenue-sharing model is accepted and the films scheduled for release in June are Pawan Kalyan's long-delayed 'Hari Hara Veera Mallu' (June 12), Dhanush's 'Kubera' (June 20), and Manchu Vishnu's 'Kannappa' (June 27). All are expected to be impacted if the shutdown is the teaser for Hari Hara Veera Mallu : While multiplexes that are not part of the exhibitors' association may continue to operate, a majority of single-screen theatres are expected to close if the strike Watch

Exhibitors call for theatre bandh in Telugu states from June 1; Hari Hara Veera Mallu, Thug Life among films affected

Theatres in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana might have a shutdown from June 1 if the exhibitors and producers don't reach a consensus soon. A CinemaExpress report states that around 60 exhibitors met Telugu film producers like Dil Raju and Suresh Babu on Sunday to hash out long-standing issues around the current rental-based revenue model. (Also Read: Mega157: Nayanthara returns to Telugu cinema for her 'hat-trick' film with Chiranjeevi. Watch announcement video) A joint meeting was held in Hyderabad on Sunday between the exhibitor association and some film industry bigwigs. The exhibitors pressed for a percentage-based model, calling for a bandh in the Telugu states from June 1 till the issue is sorted. Concerns were also raised over films releasing on OTT quickly after their theatrical runs. A request was put in to withhold the digital release of films for a longer period. The report states that several key distributors and producers did not attend the meeting, hinting at an internal disagreement over the proposal. A formal representation will be submitted to the Film Chamber for further discussions ahead of the June 1 deadline. However, should the associations not reach a consensus, some big summer releases in the pipeline could be affected by the move. Only multiplexes not associated with the exhibitors' association will continue to screen films. Mani Ratnam's Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR and Trisha Krishnan-starrer Thug Life is slated for release on June 5. The film will be released in the Telugu states in Tamil and a dubbed Telugu version. Krish and Jyothi Krishna's Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 1, starring Pawan Kalyan, Bobby Deol and Nidhhi Agerwal, is scheduled for release on June 12. It was initially slated for release on May 30. Should the bandh stretch, Sekhar Kammula's Dhanush, Nagarjuna, Rashmika Mandanna, and Jim Sarbh-starrer Kuberaa, which will be released on June 20, could also be affected. Mukesh Kumar Singh's Vishnu Manchu-starrer Kannappa, which features cameos from Akshay Kumar, Prabhas, Mohanlal and others, is slated for release on June 27.

Andhra govt removes Kadapa mayor over violation of rules

VIJAYAWADA/KADAPA: The Andhra Pradesh government has removed Kothamaddi Suresh Babu from the Kadapa Mayor post, accusing him of violating municipal rules to benefit his family's business. In its order ( 446) on Wednesday, the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department claimed Suresh Babu violated the GHMC Act, 1955, by awarding civil works contracts worth Rs 55.64 lakh to Vardhini Constructions, a company owned by his wife, Jayasree, and son, Amaresh. The controversy kicked off when Kadapa MLA Madhavi Reddappagari filed a complaint with the Vigilance and Enforcement Department, flagging what she called 'huge irregularities' in Kadapa's municipal contracts. The department's probe revealed that Vardhini Constructions, registered as a Class-V category contractor in 2023, bagged 10 projects under Suresh Babu's watch. Seven of these, including laying CC roads and desilting storm drains in the 12th and 29th divisions, were completed, netting Rs 33.65 lakhs. Three other contracts, like CC road works in Buddayapalli, are still pending. The State government says this setup breaches Section 22-1(h) of the GHMC Act, which forbids elected members or their kin from having stakes in municipal contracts, labelling it a clear conflict of interest. Suresh Babu, a YSRCP leader in his second mayoral term since 2021, got a show-cause notice on March 24, 2025. In his May 7 response, he claimed he didn't know about the contracts, which were under Rs 10 lakhs and handled by the Municipal Commissioner, not the council.
