Centre hikes MSP for 14 crops, but farmers not happy
Bathinda: Three days ahead of the start of paddy transplantation in Punjab, the central govt announced the minimum support price (MSP) for various kharif crops, including paddy, for the kharif marketing season (KMS) 2025-26 on Wednesday.
The MSP for paddy was increased by Rs 69 per quintal from Rs 2,300 per quintal in 2024-25 to Rs 2,369 per quintal in 2025-26. For Grade A paddy, it was increased from Rs 2,320 in 2024-25 to Rs 2,389 in 2025-26.
The MSP for kharif maize was increased by Rs 175 per quintal from Rs 2,225 per quintal in 2024-25 to Rs 2,400 per quintal in 2025-26, while the MSP for moong was increased by Rs 86 per quintal from Rs 8,682 in 2024-25 to Rs 8,768 per quintal in 2025-26.
The MSP for medium staple cotton was increased by Rs 589 per quintal from Rs 7,121 to Rs 7,710 per quintal, and for long staple, it was increased from Rs 7,521 to Rs 8,110 per quintal. In total, the MSP for 14 crops was increased, including cereals, pulses, oilseeds, and the commercial crop of cotton.
The central govt claimed that a minimum of 50% profit over input cost was ensured on most of the crops, while a profit of 59% was claimed in maize, tur/arhar, and 63% in bajra.

However, farmer organisations, though welcoming the increase in MSP, say it is still not as per their demand of 50% profit over comprehensive cost (C2) by including interest on capital while calculating input cost. Farmers say they were demanding for a long time that the MSP should be fixed as per Swaminathan Commission recommendations, and as per the formula of C2+50% profit, the announced MSP is much below what they were demanding.
E arlier, farmers had staged morchas at the borders of Punjab-Haryana at Shambhu and Khanauri for over a year over the demand for the legal right of MSP on all crops as per C2+50%.
The central ministers were holding talks with farmers over the issue when the Punjab govt forcibly demolished the morchas at both sites, and talks stalled, said farmer leaders Jaswinder Singh Longowal and Surjit Singh Phool, who were part of the farmer morchas.
