Letter: Alliances are great legacy of victory in World War II

Having read extensively about World War II, I thought I knew all the countries that fought together as the Allies. A Google search showed me I was wrong. There were 13 countries, more than I expected. I am very proud of my father's service in that war and all of the Americans alongside whom he served. But could we Americans alone have won that war alone? I think not. We were successful due to the combined efforts, contributions, skills, etc. of many countries. So why now do some of us so strongly espouse an America first and America alone mentality? What do we gain by deporting foreign students studying in our universities? Many of them remain here after school, and we benefit from their expertise. Are we better off inviting the leaders of other countries to visit the White House and then degrading them? Are we going to leave NATO and further isolate ourselves? The relative peace we have experienced since World War II is due to the strength through collaboration that we have enjoyed. I'd rather have lots of friends on whom I can depend than lots of enemies. How about you? Susan Leiby Hamburg

Letter: Rapid changes in Washington eventually will affect us all

Changes to our American way of life are occurring like a blitzkrieg. When will it affect you? Will it be when your grandma loses her Social Security, your uncle loses his veterans medical care, the post office is not around to deliver your mail, or scientists are no longer hired to check our foods for Maybe it will occur when someone you know is deported based on suspicion; schools and colleges are defunded, making an education available only for the rich; or when Medicaid is disbanded, making health care for the poor and disabled but a memory. Thousands of people in Berks County are recipients of Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security benefits. What will happen to our local economy when these people no longer have the money to spend in local businesses, especially small businesses that already often operate on a shoestring budget? In the current environment, if you are not rich, you don't matter. Well, most of us are not rich, but our strength is that we do constitute the majority of people. If we band together, stand up for our own rights and dignity, and force politicians to represent us, as they are paid to do, we can stop this raping of our country. We will either fight together now or surely suffer together later. I don't know about you, but I prefer to control my own destiny. What will you choose to do? Susan Leiby Hamburg

Letter: What happened to American priorities?

Where are American priorities? I am a well-educated, straight 72-year-old Christian female of German ethnicity. I do not understand prejudice. I really don't understand prejudicial actions that cause self-harm. Most of us have favorite restaurants, likely because we like the food. Do we grill the waitress/waiter concerning who purchases and cooks the food? If we found out that the chef was dark-skinned, would we stop going there? If our investments are doing well, do we question whether the person directing those investments is gay or straight? When our physician prescribes medications to address our medical issues, do we investigate who developed it? Would we stop taking it because it was a person lumped in the diversity, equity and inclusion community? If a loved one needed lifesaving surgery, would we want the very best surgeon, or just one who is white and straight? Do we question who built our cars, grew our food, constructed a house we are interested in buying or designed clothing that appeals to us? I doubt it. The multitude of blessings available to us come from a very broad community. That means they are the product of talents from people of diverse religions, races, ethnicities and many preferences. Jesus said, 'Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.' Yes, he said 'all.' We lose so much that is good and beneficial to all of us in this world when we set restrictions on who can live, work and prosper among us. Susan Leiby Hamburg
