Here's What Honda's Doing for the LA Olympics for 2028

Honda will donate $1 million over four years to the Los Angeles Olympics, coming in 2028, and to the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics next year. Numerous Honda vehicles will be part of the deal, from minivans and SUVs to ATVs, SxSs, motorcycles, and even Motocompactos. The donations will also cover the Paralympics. Honda has contributed much to various charities and good causes over the years, including donations and loans of vehicles. You can't make an illegal left turn in Pasadena without running into a Honda Tournament of Roses Odyssey, for instance. The brand will continue that wheeled goodwill when the Olympics comes to Los Angeles in 2028, with a fleet of all manner of Honda vehicles to be used by organizers and others in support of the Olympics and Special Olympic Games getting under way in three years. 'Honda will help the world's greatest athletes pursue their dreams in 2028 as a Founding Partner of the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games,' the carmaker announced yesterday at its Torrance, California, headquarters, just a half hour's freeway drive south of the very Coliseum that hosted the Games in 1932 and 1984—and will host them again in '28. Exactly which Hondas will be involved has not been sorted out yet. 'It'll be a lot of Honda and Acura EVs,' said Phil Hruka, senior manager of marketing and brand strategy for Honda and Acura. 'It won't just be cars and SUVs. Look for our ATVs, motorcycles, side-by-sides, marine engines, and Motocompactos, too.' Honda's sponsorship of the Paralympic Games was highlighted by the presence of paralympic wheelchair athlete Susannah Scaroni, who has been working with Honda on her racing wheelchair since the company started building them in 2021. Scaroni showed me photos of her race chair, with a carbon-fiber seat that had been created from scans of her body, and tuned for aerodynamic efficiency. The front wheel has properties that keep it centered while moving, but with her form-fitted seat she can turn it just by leaning her body. 'It's a lot better,' she said of the Honda wheelchair's performance. Honda's $1 million investment allows it to serve as the Official Automotive Partner of Team USA, supporting the United States Olympic and Paralympic teams during the LA28 Games and the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina 2026. Honda's by no means the only automaker involved in charitable giving: Toyota USA Foundation is known for its support of K-12 STEM education; General Motors supports STEAM education wherein the A stands for Arts; Hyundai's Hope On Wheels supports pediatric cancer research; and the Ford Foundation supports causes too numerous to name here. That's just a few automotive charities. And yes, there are probably tax benefits and good PR. Nonetheless… Look for Honda vehicles starting at the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina next year, and all over LA in 2028. Do charitable donations sway your buying choices? U of I alum Susannah Scaroni wins Boston Marathon for 2nd time

BOSTON (WCIA) — University of Illinois alum and Paralympic champion Susannah Scaroni can add another major marathon win to her resume. Scaroni was in Boston on Monday to compete in the 129th edition of the Boston Marathon. The Associated Press reported that 18 miles into the race, Scaroni opened up a 40-second lead that she continued to build up over the rest of the race. Since then, she's won the wheelchair race of all three U.S. marathons regarded among the World Marathon Majors — Chicago, New York and Boston, as well as London, Berlin, Tokyo and new for 2025 — Sydney. Scaroni won the Chicago and New York Marathons in 2022 and New York again in 2024. She won the Boston Marathon in 2023 but was unable to defend her title the following year due to injury. Advertisement One year later, she's back on top in Boston. Her win this year adds Scaroni to an exclusive club of Illini women's wheelchair racers who have won the Boston Marathon multiple times. Jean Driscoll won seven consecutive Boston Marathons from 1990 to 1996 and an eighth in 2000, while Tatyana McFadden won four in a row from 2013 to 2016 and a fifth in 2018. Christie Clinic Illinois Race Weekend offering free entries through donation Outside of the annual majors, Scaroni won the 2013 and 2014 Los Angeles Marathon women's wheelchair races, and she's also won Paralympic medals. Scaroni won a gold and bronze medal in the 2020 Paralympics and last summer in Paris, she won a silver and three bronze medals. Advertisement Three of those medals won in Paris came in events where Debrunner won gold. Closer to her alma mater, Scaroni competed in and won the 2023 and 2024 wheelchair half-marathons of the Christie Clinic Illinois Race Weekend. Scaroni may have taken first place in Boston on Monday, but she wasn't the only Illini wheelchair racer there. McFadden was competing again, and she finished the women's wheelchair race in fifth place with a time of 01:48:52. In the men's wheelchair race, Daniel Romanchuk came in second place with a time of 01:25:58. He finished four minutes after Marcel Hug of Switzerland won his eighth Boston Marathon.
